IMPROVEMENT IN WASH-BENCHES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,977, dated March 16, 1875; application filed February 24, 1875.

CASE A.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRANCIS WAY and MARTIN WAY, of Springfield, in the county of Clark and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wash- Benches; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of our improved device as arranged for use, and combined with a wringer-frame; Fig. 2 is a ver tical section of the same upon line :10 a: of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is ahorizontal section upon line a z of Fig. 2.

Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.

The principal object of our invention is to increase the strength and durability of a washbench without increase of its weight; to which end it consists principally in a wash-bench constructed from gas-pipe, combined by means of fittings, substantially as and for thepurpose hereinafter specified. It consists, further, in an extensible basket-rack, combined with and contained principally within the side rails of a wash-bench, substantially as and for the purpose hereinafter shown.

In the annexed drawings, A and A represent the side rails of our bench, which rails are constructed from gas-pipe and arranged in parallel lines, and one of each is curved inward, and threaded and screwed into a coupling, B, as shown. The opposite ends of the pipes A and A are also threaded exteriorly, and each is fitted into an arm, a, of a coupling, 0, which latter, upon its inner side, is provided with a threaded branch, 0, that receives the threaded end of a pipe, D, that extends from the same to the coupling G of the opposite rail, and firmly connects said parts together. At a point opposite to the end of the rail A each coupling 0 is extended forward and then downward, and within said extension 0 is provided a socket for the reception of the upper end of a supporting-leg, E. Two similar sockets, b and b, are formed upon the lower side of the coupling B for the reception of legs E and E, which legs diverge from their upper to their lower ends. From the upper side of each coupling 0 is provided an internally-threaded branch, 0, which receives the lower end of one of the standards, F, of a I wringer-frame, said standard being also constructed from gas'pipe. Within the forward end of each coupling 0, in a line with the axial center of the side rail A, is provided an opening, 0, which receives one end of a rod, G, that has the form, in horizontal plan view,

shown by Fig. 3, and is capable of bein g moved 7 inward until its cross-bar g bears against the ends of said couplings, as seen by the full lines of Figs. 1, 2, and 3, or of being drawn outward to the position shown by the dotted lines of Fig. 1, in which latter case said rod Gr forms'a rack or support for a clothes-basket.

The bench thus constructed possesses more than ordinary strength, is durable, not liable to get out of order, and can be furnished at no greater cost than those formed from castiron.

Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of our invention, what we claim as new is- 1. The hereinbefore-described wash-bench, consisting of the side rails A and A and end rail D, constructed from gas-pipe, and combined with each other, and with the legs E, E, and E, by means of the couplings B, b, and b, and O, c, c, c, and c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. In combination with the wash -bench shown, the basket-rack G 9, contained within said bench, and made longitudinally extensible, substantially as and for the purpose shown.
