Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 14, 1912.
Patented July 9, 1912. Serial No. 683,?91. i
To all w/om it may concm:
Be it known that I, FRANK W. HIBBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sarasota, in the County of Manatee and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fireplace and Camp Cranes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in portable cranes for culinary use, and it consists in the coustructions, conbinations and arrangements heroin described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved portable orane adapted for convenient use with open fire places, camp fir'es, etc.
'A further object of my invention is to provide a simple and strong portable crane which can be compactly folded for storage and transportation, and readly adjusted for eiiicient use.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which similar reference symbols indicate corresponding parts in the several views -Figure 1 is a vertical section of an open fire place, illustrating one embodiment of my invention; and Fig. 2 is an elevation of my improved orane shown in Fig. l, adapted for efficient use in camping.
Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates a gooseneck pipe comprising a substantially semi-circular portion and a straight portion extending tangentially from one end thereof. The other end of said. seni-circular portion is provided witha ball 2, of Wood or metal, for resting upon and swingingly sup- -porting the crane on any convenient base,
such as a mantel 3; suitable means, such as apertures t, being provided for the ready attachment of a chain 5 for swingingly supporting the crane from a tree, as shown in .Fig. 2.
A bar 6 is telescopingly mounted in the straight portion of the pipe 1, and hinged at 7 to a vertically-swinging arm 8 provided with a hook 9 for supporting a kettle or other desired article; a thumb nut 7 being provided for looking said hinged joint in its several adjusted positions. A collar 10 on the pipe 1 is provided with a thumb screw l 11 for clamping the telescoping bar 6 in position and with means, such as a hook 12, for engaging the different links of a chain 13 attached near the free end of the swinging arm 8 for firmly supporting the latter in any desired position.
A rod lt is pivotally supported on a collar 15 Secured on the gooseneck pipe at the junction of the semi-circular and straight portions of the latter and extends slidably through a counter-balance weight 16, which latter is provided with a set screw 17 for looking it in position on said rod. A hook 18 on the gooseneck pipe 1 is adapted to engage the diferent links of a chain 19` attached to the weight 16 for supporting the latter in any desired position.
From the above description, it will be clear that my invention provides a strong and compact portable crane, which can be readily adjusted for convenient use under various practical conditions.
I claim z 1. In a por-table crane, the combination of a curved member provided at one end with means for swingingly engaging a suitable support; a bar telescoping within the other end of said member, a supporting arm adjustably mounted on said bar, a rod pivotally supported on said curved member, a counter-balance weight adjustably mounted on said. rod, means for locking said bar, supporting arm, and weight in position, and adjustable means for supporting said pivoted rod in position 2. In a portable crane, the combination of a curved gooseneck pipe provided at one end with means for swingingly engaging a suit-able support, a bar 'telescoping within the other end of said pipe, a supporting arm hinged for vertical Swing on said bar, a rod pivotally supported on said pipe, a counterbalance weight-slidably mounted on saidrod, means for locking said bar, supporting arm, and weight in position, and adjustable means for supporting said pivoted rod in position.
3. In a portable crane, the combination of a member comprising a substantially seni-circular portion and a straight portion eXtending tangentially from one end thereof, means on the other end of said semicircular portion for swingingly eng-aging a suitable support, a bar slidably mounted on said straight portion, a supporting arm able means for supporting said pvoted rod hinged for vertical Swing on said bar, a rod in position. 10 pvotally supported at the juncton of said I In testimony Whereof, I afix my signasem-circular and straight portions, a couture, in presence of two witnesses.
