Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PETER NEFF, OF GAMBIER, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF LAMP-BLACK.
Specification formirg part of Letters Patent No. 160,786, dated March 16, 1875; application filed November 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER NEFF, of Gambier, Knox county, Ohio, have invented an Improved Process for the Manufacture of Lamp-Black or Carbon-Black, of which the following is a specification:
This invention consists in producing an article of lampblack of very superior quality by the combined burning of carbonaceous gases and crude petroleum, or dead oils, or the car bonaceous heavy oil residuum held in combination with sulphuric acid, being the residuum produced in the refining of petroleum, burning in the same room, and allowing the flakes of soot to settle together.
The process for the use of the oils is to burn them by using a Wick, or as they drip from a pipe over a pan, skillet or vessel in a tight room. The gas is burned With a very low pressure by using pipe With burners or holes in the pipe. This burning of the gas is in the same room in which the oil is burned. The smoke is conveyed through adjoining rooms to a stack, and as it passes the soot forms and collects in the rooms.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The process herein described of making lamp-black or carbon-black from carbonaceous gases and crude petroleum, dead oil, or oily residuum combined with sulphuric acid, pro duced by refining petroleum, consisting in burning the said gas with the said substance in the same apartment, substantially as and for the purpose described.
