Description

Nov. 16 1926.
w. J. STRAUSS SANITARY COMB) Filed Jan. 18, 1926 W11, J fltrauss INVENTOR ATTORNEY WITNESS:
I vantages in view, the invention consists in l atented Nov. 1%, i926.
rater VTILLIAM J. STRAUSS, OF ALLENTOWN, PENIISYLVAIQ'IAQ SANITARY oorrsl Application filed January 18, 1926. Serial No. 32,141.
out of the Way, the sprin means being enclosed so as not to catch in the hair or cause any annoyance orinconvenience.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to use, positive in action, efiicient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
lVlth the above and other objects and adthe details of construction and the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and
' illustrated in the accompanying drawings,
in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the comb showing it in normal position in full lines and showing the movable element in its op erative position in dotted lines.
Figure 72 is an enlarged detail section taken through one end portion.
l gure 3 is a detail section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure l is a viewillustrating-the flexibility of the cleaning member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 designates, generally, a comb having a back 11 from which extends a plurality of spaced teeth 12 in the usual manner. At the ends of the comb are tubular enlarged guide portions 13 slotted at opposite sides as shown at 14 and containing coil springs 15. The tooth ends of the enlargements or guides 18 are closed as indicated at 16 while the other ends are open throughout as indicated at 17 so as to permit insertion of the springs within these members. Furthermore, the closed ends 16 preferably have curved surfaces 18 against ivhich the finger or thumb of the operator may be placed for a reason to be explained. The cleaner comprises an elongated bar 19 which is provided with a plurality of holes 20 located at spaced intervals seats to be slieabl engaged upon the teeth l2 of. the
comb itself. At the ends of the cleaner bar 19 are reduced extensions 21 which pass through the slots 14L in the guide members 13 andwhich. have their terminals preferably threaded as indicated at .22 for engagement thereon of knobs or other elements 23 Which will not only operate to hold the devicein place but which will also act asfinger holds by means of which the operator may move the cleaner bar longitudinally of the teeth for cleaning off any accumulations thereon.
In the use of the device, it will of course be apparent that it is used in exactly the same manner as any other comb except-that it has the advantage of being equipped with the cleaner bar. Assuming that dan.
drufi, grease, loose hair or any other matter has accumulated on the teeth of the comb, it
will be seen to effect cleaning it is merely necessary that the operator place his'thumb against the curved surfaces 18 at the-endsof the members 13 and grasp the balls or knobs 23 with the forefin er and conse uently move the cleaner bar longitudinally of the teeth toward the ends thereof for scraping off any accumulations. Vi hen this is done it is of course apparent that thesprings 15 will be compressed and When the pressure upon the knobs is relieved these springs will operate to returnthe cleaner bar to normal position against the back of the comb.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings, it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply con-.
structed, inexpensive and highly efficient. device for the purpose specified, and one which will perform all the functions for which it is intended. It is believed that the construction, operation and advantages will be readily apparent to one skilled in the art.
without further explanation.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention, it should be understood that I'reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as Will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims. 1
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. In combination, a comb including a back portion having a plurality of spaced teeth projecting therefrom and provided at its ends with tubular guide members having slots in opposite sides thereof, and a cleaning bar having a plurality of openings therein slidably engaged upon the teeth, the bar slidable back portion having a plurality of spacedteethprojeeting therefrom and provided at its ends with tubular guide members having slotslinopposite sidesthereof, cleaning bar having a plurality of openings therein slidably engaged upon the teeth, the bar having reduced end portions slidable through the slots insaid guide members, and coil springs located Within said guide members engaging against said cleaning bar, knobs upon the projecting ends ofsaid reduced end portions, the ends of said tubular guide members at the back of'the comb being open and the other ends being closed and having curved fingerengaging surfaces.
3. In combination, a comb including a back portion having a' plurality of spaced teeth pro'ecting therefrom, and provided at its ends with guides, and a springpressedcleaning bar apertured for engagement uponthe' WILLIAM J. STRAUSS.
