Nov. 9, 1926. v M 1,606,474- I G. J. KUHN I scasw DRIVER GRIPPING DEVICE Filed Nov. 2B. 1923 a 70 2 2'2 r m/ 7? 5+ Patented Nov. 9,1926. W i l UNITED (STATES PATENT oFFic GEORGE J. KUHN, or Anni/is, rumors. scienw-nnIvnn-enirrine nnvion Application filedNovember 28, 1923. I Serial No. 677,395.
The object of my invention is to provide a 16 held position by the-screws :17, which screw driver having a gripping means for extend theretlirough and project into the engaging the screw forstarting it, the parts enlarged portion 12. The enlarged portion being simple, durable and comparatively in- 12 is provided'for accommodating the screws 6!? 6 expensive. 1 h 17 whereby the arm 16 isfixed:
More particularly, my invention com- The-arm 1'6 rests substantiallyagainst one prises a screw driver having two screw enedge of the shank 11 and has its. forward end gaging blades, one of which is used when p'rovid'edwi-th a=jaw member 18 whichhas the screw is first started and the other one an opening 19 therein. Still a further object is to provide a fixed The jaw-member 18,-together with thearm 70 1 jaw on the screw driver and a m'ovable jaw "16 is capable of movement so that-the jaw member for engaging the screwheadwhen anember 18 may properly be termedawmovthe screw is first. engaged, and to provide able-jaw member. With these and other objects in view, my Plvotally mounted on the screw 20 is an invention consists in the construction, aractuating finger 21 having the finger enrangement and combination of the various gaging piece 22 thereon. The actuating finparts of my device, whereby the objects conger 21 is arranged substantially at right- 80 25 templated are attained, as hereinafter more angles to the arm 16. The arm 16 projects fully set forth, pointed out in my claim, and out beyond the side of the shank 11 so that illustrated in the accompanying drawings, When the finger 21 is swung on its pivot, in which: the forward edge thereof will engage the Figure 1 is a perspective view of my imarm 16, spacing the jaw member 18 from 35 proved screw driver and gripping means. the jaw member 13 to permit a screw head Figure 2 is a side elevation of the same. to be received between the jaws and to be Figure 3 is a detail, sectional. view taken engaged by the screw driver blade 15. on line 3-3 of Figure 2. Secured to the shank 11 is a resilient arm After the screw has been started somewhat, then it is necessary to move the actuating finger 21 to the dotted line position in Figure 1, at which time the screw head may be disengaged from the jaw members 13 and 18 and then the operation completed by using the screw driver blade 24: in the ordinary manner.
The arm 16 is of resilient material and will normally remain in the position shown in solid lines in Figure 1 of the drawings.
After the screw has been engaged then the screw driver blade 2% is used.
It will be seen that I have provided a pOSl'tlVQ screw engaging means which may function properly for commencin the screw and thereafter by an independent screw driver blade, the placing of the screw may be completed.
It will be seen that I have provided on the shank 11 two independent screw driving blades for first starting the screw and then completing the positioning of the same.
Some changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of my invention, without departing from the real spirit and purpose of my in vention and it is my intention to cover by my claim, any modified forms of structure or use of mechanical equivalents which may be reasonably included within their scope.
I claim as my invention:
A screw driver having means thereon for gripping the head of a screw, said means comprising a jaw on the shank of said screw driver near the screw slot engaging end thereof, a depression in said jaw for receiving substantially one half a screw head, a blade in said depression for engaging the slotof the screw, said blade having substantially one halt thereof extending into said depression, a second jaw yieldingly supported on said shank having a depression therein for receiving the other half of the screw head and so arranged as to yieldingly hold the same, the other half of said blade extending into the depression in said second jaw, and a lever mounted on said shank for disengaging said yielding jaw from said screw head.
