.This invention relates to looks, and more particularly to indicator locks which are especially adapted for use on hotel corridor doors. having means to indicate to a chamber-maid or other person on the outside of the door whether or not the room has been locked against unauthorized intrusion, and it refers more especially to a lock of this character having an indicator which can be read by feeling or touch, so that it is useful at night as well. as in the daytime.
lVhile in some of its aspects my invention relates more particularly to an indicator for a lock provided with a dead locking device for the latch bolt, it is not necessarily restricted to this use,.but may also be used in connection with a dead bolt lock.
One object of my invention; therefore, is to provide indicating means by which the position of the dead locking device of the lock may be denoted.
A further object of my invention is to provide a lock of this character with an indicating device designed to be mounted upon the door frame or jamb.
A further object to provide upon the door jamb a normally depressible indicating push button, which shall, however, when the dead locking means of the lock is in operative position, be held against depression so as to indicate the condition of the door look.
A still further object of the invention is to provide means within the lock to abut against a part of an indicating mechanism upon the door frame or jamb and prevent movement of the indicating mechanism when the door is locked.
To these and other ends the invention con sists in the novel features and combinations of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

V In the drawings 1 have shown my improvements applied to a lock having the usual mortise case with a face plate 21. In the lower part of the lock is mounted a latch bolt 23. The latch bolt mechanism per se forms no part of the present inventioii but it may be stated that said bolt is retractable from the inside by the usual knob spindle acting on a hub 24- to draw back a retracting shoe or yoke 25, and in the particular case illustrated, the outside knob which is connected by its spindle to a hub member 26 is permanently dogged against movement by a portion 26 on said hub member extending between lugs 27 on the case. The knob shoe has a shoulder 25 disposed in front of a cross-head 28 on the rear end of the latch bolt stem 29, which stem is surrounded by the usual spring 30, which reacts against guide lugs 30 upon the case. 1
in the upper part of the case a cylinder lock 31 is screwed in at the outer side and this cylinder through connections to be hereinafter described is adapted to actuate a latch retracting lever 32 pivoted in the up per part of the case at 33 and having its lower extremity in front of the cross-head 28. In the form of my invention shown, the usual dead bolt has been omitted and instead there is provided a flat slide member 35 provided with talons 36 adjacent the look 31 and a cut away portion 37 between these talons and the forward end of the slide in which the fence or stump 38 formed rigidly with the lock case is received. This fence guides the slide in its reciprocating movement in the lock and it is also guided in a suitable manner atits lower side by one of the lugs 30. Below the talons the slide has a cutout portion 39 to receive a thumb turn hub ll), which is journaled in the case in a suitable manner. In the lower part of the cutout or aperture 39 a gate ll is formed to cooperate with a d2 on the thumb turn hub.
The slide is provided with a tumbler e3 pivoted on a post a l at the forward part of the slide so as to be carried by the latter and is formed with a projection extending between the talons 36 into cooperation with the rollback oi? the cylinder lock 31. This tumbler i3 is provided intermediate its ends with a lug 46 to cooperate with the fence 38 in locking the slide either in the retracted position or in an advanced position. Below the tumbler 43 and pivoted to the lock case at 47 is a second tumbler as which cooperates with the thumb turn hub to dead lock the latch bolt. This tumbler is provided with a spring i9 reacting against a post 50 rigid with the case. The main part of the tumbler l8 overlies the body of the slide 35 and at its upper side the tumbler is provided with notches which converge toward the upper edge thereof and meet each other near the upper edge of the tumbler. One of these notches is indicated at 51 and the other at 52 and the spring 49 exerts an upward thrust on the tumbler so as to keep it firmly seated against the thumb turn hub with the wing 42 engaged with one or the other of the notches 51 and The tumbler in this manner exerts such an upward thrust on the wing 42 as to hold it in cooperation with one or the other side edges of the gate T1 in such a manner that the slide will be locked in either its retracted or protracted position and cannot be moved out of such position except by the actuation of a thumb turn or the lock 31 by means of the proper key. 1
The action of the lower tumbler is imparted to the upper tumbler by means of a tumbler connector 53, which may take the form 01 a small plate. In the example shown. this plate has upper and lower pins 54 and 55 projecting rearwardly therefrom, the pin is being received in the slot 56 in the upper tumbler and the lower pin 55 entering a smaller hole in the lower tumbler. The slot 56 permits the slide 35 to be shifted together with the tumbler 43 without disturb ing the connection of the upper movable tumbler with the lower tumbler, L8, mounted on the fixed pivot 47, as will be obvious. The upper part of the connecting plate is also preferably notched, as shown at 57,130 fit around the fence 38. This guides the tumbler connector in its vertical movement as the tumblers are depressed and maintains the upper part of the connector in the proper relation to the slot 56. The cylinder lock 31 is preferably of the kind shown in the patent to Voight No. 1,2e3,016, granted October 16, 1917, and as shown, it has the usual case 58 in which a key plug 59 is rotatably mounted. The key plug is preferably controlled by the usual pin tumblers (not shown), Cooperating with V the key plug in the manner described in the patent referred to are a pair of roll- backs 62 and 63, the former being rotated alone by all of the keys to the lock, except the emergency key, which rotates both of the rollbacks. These roll-backs are spaced apart in parallel planes by means or a washer (i l and it will be apparent that while the operating projection 4C5 on the upper tumbler 43 is disposed in the plane of the roll-back 63, it is without the plane of the roll-back 62, the latter turning idly over this projection and not being-capable of retracting or advancing the slide 35.
The latch retracting lever 32 previously described may be actuated from the cylinder lock by means of a lever 65 pivoted on the slide at 67 and carried. by the slide in its movement to and fro in the lock. The free end of this lever extends into cooperation with a part 66' 011 the upper end of the lever 82, when the slide is in retracted position, so that by depressing the lever 65 the lever 32 may be actuated to retract the latch. For this purpose the lever 65 is provided intermediate its ends and in proximity to the cylinder lock with a comparatively deep operating projection 68 close to and having portions in substantial alignment with both roll- backs 62 and 63, so that said lever may be actuated by the rotation of either rollback. It will be observed, however, that when the slide is in advanced position, as shown in Fig. 5, the lever 65 is not only out of contact with the latch retracting lever 32, but it is also without the range of movement of the rollbacks 62 and 63, so that with the slide in this position it is impossible to operate the latch retracting lever by means of the lock 31.
In order to dog ordead lock the latch in protracted position, I have provided a dogging member 70 pivoted upon the post 47 and normally urged to dead locking position v by means of a spring 71 secured in a notch in the member 70 and reacting against the post 50 adjacent the spring 49. Pivoted to the face plate 21 of the lock case at 72 is a dog controlling plunger 73, which is adapted to abut a closed or solid portion of the door strike to be retracted within the lock case when the door is closed. In the form of my invention shown in the drawings, this dogcontrolling plungerdoes not contact directly with the dogging member 70, but a connecting or intermediate lever is provided in the form of a swinging member 7 1 pivoted at upon the slide 35 and normally urged in a counte'rcloekwis'e direction, as "shown in Fig. 1, by a spring 76 engaged in a slot in the member 7 1 and reacting against a shoulder (not shown) formed upon the slide 35. it will be observed that when the slide 35' is advanced from the position shown in Fig. at to the position shown in Fig. 5, the connecting lever "i=1 being mounted on the slide adranced to a position immediately behind the do'gcontrolling plunger 7 3 where, when the door is closed and the plunger is retracted within the lock case, this member will be engaged by the plunger and forced downwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5. The slot 78 will then assume such aposition that it will permit tl'ie'spring 71 to moye the clogging member 70 behind the bolt head 23 to dog the latter in protracted posit-ion. It will also be understood,however, that until the door is closed and the dog controlling plunger retracted Within the lock case, the movement of the slide, together Wit-lithe connecting member 74 will not change the position of the slot 78 to a sufficient eXtent to permit the dogging member 70 to he moved to dogging position.
In order to dog theknob When the latch bolt is dead locked, I have shown a lever 81 pivoted upon the post 50 and provided with a lug 82;, which may be swung doWnwardly to abut [against a beveled projection 83 on the latch retracting shoe. The upper end of this lever is engaged by the slide in a suitable manner so that the lever will be 'properly'actuated upon the reciprocation of the slide. The mechanism of my 7 lock as thus far described is shown and its operation more fully set forth in my copending ap lication, Serial No. 574,395, tiled July 12, 1922.

The other end of this lever cooperates with the head 90 0'1 a spring-pressed indicator controlling plunger mounted in a cylinder 91 in the strike plate and provided with a shank 92, which is adapted to be projected throtigh an opening 93 in the face of the plate. A coil spring 94 is mounted Within the cylin- G01 91 and reacts between the rear face of the strike plate and the head '90 of the plunger to normally hold the plunger in its retracted position Within the strike and by means of the lever 87 to normally hold the push-button 88 in its outer position, as shown in Fig. 7-.' The push-button is also mounted in a cylinder er in the strike plate and both this cylinder and the cylinder 91 are provided. with side notches '95 and 96 to permit the ends the lever 87 to follow the push-button and plunger intheir movements Within the cylinders.

In the operation of my lockthe push-but ton 88 normally stands in its outer position, as shown. Fig. 7. Vhen the door is closed but not dead locked, the push-but ton may be depressed into the position shown in Fig. 8, the stop 97' being urged inwardly against the action of the spring 102 to permit the movement of the shank oi? the plunger and the strike plate into the lock case. This in turn permits the necessary movement of the adjacent end ofthe lever 87 to permit the depression of the puslnbutton. When, however, the latch has been dead locked by means of the thumb turn from the inside or by the ei'hergency keytr'om the outside, the slide 35 isthroWn forwardly against the rear face of the stop 97 compressing the spring 102; Th'e' indicating button will now be set or fixed against movement as the stop 97 will not be permitted to more inwardly to permit any movement of the plunger head 90, thus holding the lever 87 inthe position shown in Fig.- 7; The maid, by trying the push-' button 88, may determine if it is held against depression that the room has been locked against her entry and this determination may be made without disturbing the were pant by rattling the deer knob. What I claim is: c
1. In a door lock, in combination, a bolt, dead locking means for the bolt movable Within the case, an indicator mounted on the door amb and means for actuatingthe dead locking means and settingthe indicator.
1 2. In combination with a'lock having a bolt and dead locking mechanism therefor within the lock case, an indicating device upon. the jamb to indicate the position of the dead locking means.
3. In adoorlock, in combination a bolt, dead locking means for the bolt within the lock case, an outside indicator upon the door jamb and means for actuating the dead looking means and setting the indicator. l. The combination with a door lock having a latch bolt, and dead locking means for the bolt, of indicating means upon the door jamb and I means operable from the inner side of the door for actuating the dead looking means and setting the indicator.
5. The combination with a door lock having a bolt, dead locking means therefor and means for actuating the dead locking means from either side of the doorindependently of the bolt, of indicating means on the door jamb to indicate the condition of the dead locking means.
, 6. The combination with a door lock having a bolt and dead locking means for the bolt, of indicating means upon the door frame and means operable from the outer side of the door for actuating the dead looking means, said dead lockingmeans setting the indicator.
7. The combination with a door lock having a bolt and dead locking means for the bolt, of indicating means upon the door frame, and means operable from either side of the door for actuating the dead looking means and setting the indicator.
8. The combination of a door and door frame, a lock on the door having a bolt and dead locking means for the bolt, a strike on the frame to receive said bolt, a manual test indicator on the door frame at the outside of the door and means for setting said indicatorwhen the bolt is dead locked.
9. The combination of a door and door frame, a lock on the door having a bolt, a strike on the frame to receive said bolt, a manual test indicator on the door frame at the outside of the door comprising a normally depressible push-button, and means independent of the bolt to fix said push-button against depression when the door is locked.
10. I11 a lock, the combination with a case, a bolt therein, the dead locking means for the bolt, thumb turn mechanism for operat ing the dead locking means from the inside of the door, key mechanism for operating the dead locking means from the outside of the door, and indicator mechanism associated with the strike to denote the position of the dead locking means.

In a lock, the combination of a knob operated bolt, dead locking means for the bolt operable from either side of the door, a depressible indicatoron the door jamb normally held in an engageable position, and means to fix said indicator against depression upon the operation of the dead locking means.
'12. In a look a lock bolt, dead locking mechanism for the bolt operable from either side ofthe door, a manual test indicator on the door jamb, and a member within the lock case and operable upon the operation of the dead locking mechanism for setting the indicator.
13. The combination with a door and door frame of a lock on the door having a bolt, a strike on the frame to receive said bolt,
means fordead locking the bolt from the.
outside of the door by a key, thumb turn means for operating the dead locking mechanism from the inside of the door, an indicator on the door frame, and means for setting the indicator upon the operation of the dead locking mechanism by either the key or the thumb turn.
14. An indicator strike for looks having an outwardly urged depressible member adapted to be felt by the hand from the outside of the room and to thereby give an indication of the condition of the lock, and means on the strike and projecting through the face thereof to set said member against depression.
15. The combination with a door and door frame of a look upon the door and a strike upon the door frame to cooperate with the lock, an indicator on the strike having a part adapted to enter the lock case, and means to prevent the entry of said member into the lock case when the door is locked.
16. A lock having a bolt and a yieldably retractable indicator stop member and means independent of the bolt to prevent the retraction of said member when the bolt is locked.
17. The combination of a lock having a bolt and a dead locking slide for the bolt,

an indicator controlling member normally standing flush with the face of the lock-case but yieldably retractable into the case, and means to set said member against retracttion when the dead locking means is operative.
18. The combination with a door and door frame of a lock on the door, a strike plate on the frame adapted to cooperate with the look, indicating means upon the strike plate having a manual test member and a portion adapted to be projected from the face of the plate, and means in the lock to cooperate with said projecting portion to indicate the position of the lock.
19. The combination with a door and door frame of a look upon the door having a bolt, an opening in the face of the lock, a member normally closing said opening, a strike plate on the door frame cooperating with the lock and provided with an opening, indicator mechanism carried by the strike plate including a member standing in said last named opening to cooperate with said closure member.
20. The combination with a door and door frame of a lock mounted upon the door provided with a bolt and dead locking means for the bolt, a stop member normally standing flush with the face of the look but retractable into the case thereof, a strike plate cooperating with the bolt, and indicating means mounted on the strike plate and having a member adapted to project through the plate and contact with the stop member.
21. In combination with a lock having a bolt, and dead locking slide for the bolt, a normally retractable indicator stop member mounted in the lock, and meansupon said dead locking slide to retain the stop member against retraction.
22. A door lock having a latch bolt, a slide for dead locking the bolt, a retractable indicator stop guided for movement in said slide, and means to hold said stop against movement when the slide is in position to dead lock the latch bolt.
23. A door lock having a latch bolt, a slide for dead locking the bolt, a repressible indicator stop movably mounted in the lock, a spring reacting between said slide and stop to yieldably hold it in indicating position, and means to hold said stop against repression when the slide is in position to dead lock the latch bolt.
24. A door lock having a latch bolt, a slide for dead locking the bolt, a spring pressed repressible indicator stop mounted in the face plate of the lock, and means to hold said stop against repression when the slide is in position to dead lock the latch bolt.
25. In combination, a door lock having a bolt and a strike plate cooperating there with, an indicator on the strike plate, a spring press'edindicator stop mounted in the lock, and means to retain said stop against repression when the door is locked.
26, A door lock having a latch belt, a strike plate cooperating therewith, an indicator mountedon the strike plate, a spring pressed indicator stop mounted in the lock, dead locking means for the bolt, and means actuated by the movement of said dead locking means to hold the stop against repression when the bolt is dead locked.
27. A door lock having locking mechanism, a strike plate cooperating therewith, an indicator on the strike plate, a repressible indicator stop mounted in the lock, and means associated. with said locking mechanism for both yieldingly and positively holding said stop against repression.
28. A door lock having a latch bolt, a
strike plate cooperating therewith, an indicator on the strike plate, dead locking mechanism for the lock bolt, a repressible indicator stop mounted in the lock, and means associated with said dead locking mechanism acting normally to hold the stop yieldably against repression and holding said stop positively against repression when the bolt is dead locked.
29. In combination, a strike comprising a plate having an opening therein, indicating mechanism carried by the plate having a manual test member and a part adapted to project through said opening, a lock and means within the lock case to control said projecting part.
30. In combination, a strike comprising a plate having an opening therein, indicating mechanism carried by the plate and having a part adapted to project through said opening, a lock having a bolt, dead locking means for the bolt, said projecting part of the indicating means being controlled by the dead locking means. i

In combination, a strike comprising a plate having an opening therein, indicating mechanism carried by the plate and having a part adapted to project through said opening, a lock having a bolt, dead locking means for the bolt, a plunger to control said projecting part of the indicating means and being in turn controlled by the dead locking means.

In combination, a door lock provided with a bolt and a face plate having an opening therein, a strike plate cooperating with the lock, an indicator on the strike plate provided with a controlling member protractable from the strike plate into the face plate opening in the lock, and a member movably mounted in the lock and adapted to contact with said protractable member to prevent movement thereof.
33. In combination, a strike plate having a manual test indicator mounted thereon, a controlling member for the indicator, a lock provided with a bolt and a face plate having an opening therein, a stop member adapted to project into said opening and en gage said indicator controlling member to prevent the protraction of the latter when the bolt is locked, and means to permit the indicator controlling member to enter the lock case When the bolt is unlocked.
