Description

v N. S. 6088. Cartridge-Holder.
'N0 ]60',420 Patented Mar ch 2,1875.
Wl'inemses I222 rut/17' THE GRAPHIC C0.PHOTOPLITH.39&4I PARK PLACEJLY UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NATHANIEL S. GOSS, OF NEOSHO FALLS, KANSAS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARTRIDGE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,420, dated March 2, 1875 application filed January 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL S. Goss, of Neosho Falls, in the county of Woodson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cartridge Spring- Sockets and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in sockets for holding and carrying cartridges for breech-loading tirearms and its object is to firmly and securely hold and support the cartridge in a perpendicular or upright position, with the opening or mouth up, whereby the liability of displacement of the charge contained therein, which would occur if carried in a reverse position, is prevented, and the cartridgeis prevented from dropping out or being pulled out by bushes, vines, or long grass.
This socket is designed to be secured or attached to a belt, but may be attached to a coat, vest, or any other known device for. earryin g cartridges.
Those devices that have heretofore been used for this purpose usually consist of loops or clasps attached to a carrying-belt, and s0 arranged that the cartridges are inserted with the opening down, whereby the charges are rendered liable to start or become displaced by their own weight, or, ifcarried in an upright position, they are sustained and rest upon a ridge or ledge attached to the belt.
To enable those skilled in the art to understand and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
Similar letters of reference indicate the same parts.
Figure 1 is a front vlew, showing a portion of a belt, with sockets attached. Fig.
then bent or shaped into the proper form, as.
shown in Figs. 1 and 2, so that the tongue A forms a bottom or support for the cartridge to rest upon, and the remaining portion forms one side of the socket, and also operates as a spring to press against and hold the cartridge securely in position.
The top or opening of .the socket is made flaring or tunnel-shaped to admit of the easy introduction of the cartridge, and the countersink G prevents the cartridge from coming in contact with the rivets which hold the socket to its attachment.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cartridge spriug'socket, having a flaring or tunnel shaped top, and the tongue A and groove G, constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
