c, FRANCIS WASHBASIN Filed April 29, 1925 mm M M ATTORNEYS Patented Oct. 19, 1926.
CHARLES FRANCIS, F WINNIPEG, .IVIAIQ'ITOBA, CANADA.
WASHBASIN.
Application filed April 29, 1925. Serial No. 26,753.
' wash basins and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is the provi sion of a wash basin having means for preventing splashing of the contents therefrom, even though the basin be rocked from side to side or be subjected to shocks and jars as when the basin is suppo ted on a railway car, or other moving support.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a wash basin of the character described which is adapted to prevent splashing of the contents therefrom without interfering with the use or cleaning of the basing in the usual manner.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a plan view showing a basin embodying the invention in place on a support.
Figure 2 is a relatively enlarged fragmentary vertical section through a portion of the structure exhibited in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2, showing a modified form of basin embodying the same invention.
In carrying out the invention in the form exhibited in Figures 1 and 2, I provide a basin having a body 1 which is bowl-shaped as is usual and which may have any desirable conflguration in cross sectional contour. The body 1 may be set in an opening 2 in a suitable support 3, which may be the top of a stand or any other suitable supporting structure. The body 1 may have the usual drain outlet in its bottom as at 4. Means for supplying water to the basin of course will be associated with the body 1 and may comprise the faucets 5 which are shown in Figure 1 as being carried by the support 3 and as having the discharge members thereof overhanging the body 1. However, any suitable known arrangement of means for supplying water to the body 1 may be provided without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
It is desirable that the contents of the body 1 shall be prevented from splashing out over the rim of the body, either into an. adjacent basin when a plurality of the basins are arranged in a row adjacent tonne ether is the practice in railway man cars and in like places, or to prevent the splash from the basin falling onto the support for the basin, the clothing of the user of the basin or onto any other objects and articles which may be adjacent to the basin. The invention therefore provides a guard at the rim of the body 1 for deflecting back into the body 1 the splash that otherwise would pass out of the body 1 over the rim of the basin. This anti-splash guard may have the form of a flange formed integrally with the body 1 as shown in Figures 1 and 2 and extending upwardly and inwardly from its juncture with the body 1 as at 6, then curved inwardly and downwardly as at 7 and finally extending downward and slightly inward at 8 and terminating at its edge in a bead 9 through which a reinforcing wire 10 extends. With this arrangement, the edge of the anti-splashing flange terminates below the level of the rim of the body 1 and is spaced from the inner wall of the body 1 so that an annular compartment as at 11 is provided at the rim of the body 1, this annular compartment being open only at its bottom and being adapted to catch and to deflect downwardly water and matter carried thereby which otherwise would splash out of the body 1 over its rim.
The edge of the anti-splash flange is spaced from the inner wall of the body 1 a distance suflicient to permit the inner wall of the compartment 11 to be cleaned conveniently and thoroughly. The bead 9 eX- tends laterally of the flange only at the side of the latter which is nearest to the center of the body 1,the face of the flange which is next to the side wall of the body 1 being continuously smooth.
In the form of the device partially exhibited in Figure 3, the body of the basin is designated at 12 and may be the body of a wash basin of ordinary construction, the rim edge of this body 12 terminating flush with the upper wall of a support 13 having an opening 14: in which the body 12 fits. The anti-splash member or guard of the modified form of the device is formed separately from the body 12 and comprises an attaching portion 15 which overlies the edge 12 and the adjacent portion of the upper face of the support 13 and is secured to the latter by fastening devices, such. as the screw indicated at 16. The flange of the antisplash guard of the *difled form of device extends inwardly i??? ii the rim of the body 12, as at 17, then curves inwardly and downwardly at 18, and then downward and slightly inward, as at 19, and terminates at its edge in a bead 20 through which a reinforcing wire 21 extends.
The operation of the modified form of the device is identical in essential respects with the operation of the form of the device exhibited in Figures 1 and 2.
Obviously the invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than those which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings and I therefore consider as my own all such modifications and adaptations thereof as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
The arrows in Figures 2 and 3 show the action of the water in the basin.
Vhat I claim is:
1. A wash water receptacle having a bowlshape'd body, and an anti-splash flange at the rim of the body; said flange terminating at its edge below the plane of the rim of the body and in spaced relation to the inner wall of said body, said flange having the edge portion thereof enlarged inwardly or toward the center of the receptacle and a reinforcing member extending in said enlarged edge portion of the flange.
2. A wash water receptacle having a bowlshaped body, and an anti-splash flange extending inwardly from the rim of the body, then downwardly and ii'lwardly and l'inally downward and slightly inward, the flange terminating at its edge below the level of the rim of the body and in spaced relation to the inner wall of the body, the edge portion of the flange being formed to produce a head which extends laterally of the flange only at the side of the latter which is nearest to the center of the body of the receptacle, the face of the flange which isnearest to the side wall of the receptacle being continuously smooth throughout its area.
