This invention relates to a device for attaching pail covers to pails and particularly to such pails which are provided with annular wire reinforced rims.
7 One oil. the objects of my invention is to provide a device for the aforementioned purpose by means of which, a pail cover may be readily attached to the pail rim by crimping the edge of the pail cover, or lugm provided with such pail cover, against the rim of the pail in one or two operations, depending upon the desire to fasten the cover to the pail at lesser or at greater numbers 01' places.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of this hind, which not only will properly perform the crimping operation, but which also will stay open and not collapse of its own account once it is set to its open position,but which will readily respond to the closing operation when so desired.
Another object of my invention is to provide in connection witlrthe device, a plate adapted to be set upon the cover to be attached to the. pail, said plate being provided with an annular recess of quarter circular cross section, the latter corresponding to and adapted to receive a portion of the rim, provided in the cover, which rim is to be turned upon itself about the rim of the pail. p i .A further object 01 my invention is to provide crimpingf jawsconnected with the plate and having also quarter circular. re-
cesses corresponding to but being reversed relative to and registering with the recess of the plate and adapted to bend or crimp the pailcover against the rim of the pail.
A further object of my invention is to provideactuating means" for the jaws which co-operate'with the latter in, such a manner as tostabilize the jaws when it is. desired to keep them in inoperative position. lhej foregoing. and still further objects will be more fully apparent from the following description and the accompanyingdrawings, forming part of this disclosure and illustrating one of the preferred forms of my device, however not intended to limit its construction to the showing.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 representing a partial top view of my device.
Figure 2 is a partial cross-sectional view dial ribs 11 and an annular rim 12 from which extends a plurality of radial bifurcated lugs 13. The bottom portion of the plate is recessed as shown at 1.4 and is pro-- vided with an annular outer recess 15 of a quarter circular cross-section corresponding to the rim of the pail or to the rim of the pail cover, adapted to be attached to a pail. At the center of the plate, there is built up a hub 16 in which is securely held a guide rod 17 extending above the plate. r Hingedly associated and swinging within the bifurcated portion of lugs 13 isa plurality of crimpingjaws 18, comprising a longer arm 19 and a shorter arm 20, which latter is provided with a circularly cut jaw member 21, having a quarter circular recess 22.
The longer arm 19 is provided with a head 23, adapted to receive a bolt or pin 24.
Resting upon hub 16 is a sleeve 25, provided with a plurality of lugs 26 drilled to receive pins.- Sliding upon guide rod 17 is another sleeve 27, provided with handles 28 and having at its lower portion, a plurality of lugs 29 also provided to receive pins.
Connecting the head 23 of the crimping jaw and the lugs of sleeves25 and 27, are operating rods 30, 31 and 32, which are hingedly inter-connected at one of their ends as indicated at 33, while their other ends are hinged respectively at the head of the crimping jaw 23, at lugs 26' of sleeve 25 and hi s 29 of sleeve 27. In tie position shown clearly in Figure 2 t le se arm e, imp ng j i t l d. w erd he en he Plate a the position of the rods 31 and 32', supported by rod 30, is such that the whole arrangement of the rods and jaw 18, is in immovable, inoperative position. The device will remain in such position as long as the upper sleeve 27 will remain, unsupported, in its uppermost position.
A slight pressure upon handles 27 in downward direction, will cause the re-arrangement of the rods so' that the joint pivotal point of the ods will be thrust outwards, whereby crimping jaw 18 is compelled to assume the position shown in Figure 3, which is its operative or crimping position.
It will be seen that rod 31 connected to sleeve 25, controls the out swing of: the crimping lever and also acts as the support of sleeve 27, when the latter is in upward position.
In the drawings, there is shown a specia sleeve 25, to which levers 31 are connected. lie it understood, however, that instead of connecting the lever 31 to the sleeve, the latter may be readily attached to the hub or directly to the plate 10.
In the drawings, each of the rods is shown to be equipped with an adjusting screw, and the uppermost lever 32 is provided with a double adjusting arrangement. However, it may suliice that only one of the three rods may be made adjustable so as to assure the proper operation of the device.
Such adjustment becomes particularly necessary when it is desired to control the degree of force, required for bringing the device from its inoperative into operative position.
For example, when rods 31 and 32 are brought into steeper positions than shown in Fignre2, so that they would become nearly parallel with guide rod 17, it will be comparatively more diflicult to bring the device into operative position, than it these rods 31 and 32 would be set at an angle more acute than shown in Figure 2.
It is, of course, obvious that various changes and improvements may be made in this device, without departing from the broad scope of this invention, and I therefore reserve for myself the right to make such changes or improvements becoming necessary, by adapting my device to various sizes and shapes of pails to be closed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. An attaching device for pail covers, comprising a plate provided with an annular recess of quarter-circular cross-section, a plurality of lugs extending from said plate, a plurality of crimping jaws pivotally connected with said lugs and provided with a recess reverse to but registering with the plate recess, actuating means for said jaws, comprising a triple lever arrangement having a common pivotal point and cooperating with said jaws and adapted to keep the latter either in inoperative position, or cause them to swing with their recessed portion towards the plate.
2. An attaching device for pail covers, comprising a plate, having an annular recess of quarter-circular cross-section, a plurality ot' lugs integral with and extending from said plate, a plurality of crimping jaws pivoted in said lugs and provided with recesses registering with said plate recess, a central guide extending from said plate, a sleeve having handles associated with said guide, operating means for said jaws, composed of a plurality of interconnected adjustable rods having a common pivotal point, one of said rods being hinged to said jaws, another to said sleeve, and the third near to said plate, and adapted to cooperate with said jaws.
3. In an attaching device for pail covers, including a plate and crimping jaws, oper ating means for the latter, comprising an arrangement of three hinged, adjustable rods and a sliding sleeve guided above said plate, one rod connected to said jaws and to said sleeve and one in near proximity to said plate, said rods adapted to keep said jaws inoperative when said sleeve is set to its uppermost position.
4. An attaching device for pail covers, comprising a circular plate provided with an annular recess of quarter-circular crosssection, said recess corresponding to and adapted to receive the rim of a pail cover, a plurality of lugs forming integral parts of and extending from said plate, a plurality of crimping jaws hinged within said lugs and having at their shorter arm a recess corresponding in shape but being reversed to the plate recess, a guide rod extending centrally from said plate, a sleeve slidably associated with said guide rod and having handles and a plurality of lugs extending outwardly, a triple rod arrangement for operating each of said jaws and consisting of three rods hingedly inter-connected at one of their ends, the other end of one rod hingedly connected with the corresponding jaw, the other end of the second rod hingedly connected with said sleeve, the other end of the third rod hinged near the center of the plate, at least one of said rods being adjustable.
