Extensions of these inner walls may also carry intake valve seats, as willbe presently described.
The wall 26 maybe also formed to'receive an annular flanged intake valvemember 28 which may be maintained in fixed relation thereto by a sleeve member '29 suitably threaded to engage in an interiorly threaded inwardly projecting boss 30 integrally formed .on the end casing 39. The sleeve '29 may project inwardly from the valve member 28 to afford a bearing for a slidable valve closure disk 81 of resilient material and an annular ribbed disk 32. Spring members 33 serve to seat these valves.
The construction of the valve member 28, the sleeve 29, the valve closure disc 31, the pressure disc .32 is such that another intake valve embodying in its construction corre sponding parts which are interchangeable with the described valve parts may be disposed at the other. end of the cylinder and supported by the end casing wall 2'7. As shown in F ig. 3, the sleeve member 29 in this case, however, engages an ex'er'iorly threaded boss '34 associated with the packing box construction of the pump and is suitably bared to also serve as a piston rod bearing.
To further carry out the idea of a minimum number of interchangeable, replaceable parts, I construct the piston with parts having the same design as the parts comprising the valves hereinbefore described. As shown in Fig. 3, the piston may comprise sleeve members 29 interiorly threaded, however, to engage the inner threaded end of the piston rod 36 and maintained in proper position thereon by any convenient means, such as a cotter pin 37 extending through the rod and engaging adjacent slots formed in the abutting ends of the sleeves 29 and pairs of valve members 28 and 28 mounted on the sleeves.
The sleeves 29* are arranged to slidably 'supportoutlet valve discs 31,. the valve discs being maintained in contact with opposite faces of thetwo valve members .28 comprising the piston structure. It will be thus seen. that the piston structure may be formed by placing two of the interchangeable valve members '28 with their flanged ends disposed away from each other, whereby the flanges may conlpress packing rings it into sliding engagement with thecylinder wall.
It will be noted that such a piston construction provides extra valve members 28 which may be taken out of the piston structure and interchanged with one of the in take valve members .28 carried by either of the end casing members 9 or 10. Since the surface 28 of the intake valve member is subjected to the greatest wear When being used as an intake valve, it nevertheless does not function nor is it subjected to any wear when used in the piston structure. Likewise by reversing the valve closure member 31 an unworn valve surface may be obtained.
In Fig. 6, I show a modified form of piston construction where the idea of interchangeable piston and valve parts is maintained, but the construction is such as to provide a piston of the so-call'ed skirt type. To obtain this construction the members 28 are assembled on the sleeves 29 with the flange of one adjacent the unfianged end of a second member 28, there being an annular ring '54 supporting the annular or skirt portion of the piston which maybe formed of leather or other suitable material, the radial portion 55 being gripped between the adjacent ends of the members 28.
To obtain a highly efficient stuiling box construction which will be subjected to the minimum amount of wear, I associate the stuiiing box structure with the suction chamber of the pump in such manner that only a minimum pressure is required upon the stuiiing box gland to maintain a proper seal between the reciprocating piston rod and the pump casing. As shown in Fig. 8, this may be obtained by providing a passageway 41 extending into the suction box wherein there is a drain chamber or trap 42 formed by inserted coniform metallic washer members 43 spaced apart by lugs 44 formed thereon. Suitable packing 46 may be provided between the inner end of the stufiing box and the washer and similar packing 47 between the washers and the outer end of the stuiiing box. The usual stuffing box .sleeve 50, acted upon by a nut 51 in threaded engagement with the casing 10, aifords a means for compressing the packing l6 and 47 into engagement with the piston rod 36.
It will be thus seen that any leakage from the interior of the cylinder along the shaft will be trapped within the s'tuiting box and will be drained back into the suction cham- A ber 18 through the passageway 41. Such a stuflin'g box construction, I find, will be very eifective without resorting to applying any undue compressing of the packing 46 and 47 by tightening the nut 50 and sleeve 51 inasmuch as the leakage intentionally permitted along the shaft in order 'to save the packing is returned to the pump by suction through the passageway 41.
From the foregoing description itis apparent that the action of the pumpis base-d on the uniflow principle, and its operation is as follows :When the pair of pistons are moved from the right to the left, the right piston is drawing water from the suctlon chamber 18 through the valve at the power end of the pump and the valve'at the left end of the pump is closed. The water thus entrapped in left half of the cylinder is under compression and consequently, the outletvalve in the left piston is open. The left piston is therefore inactive by this movement when water is being forced from the cylinder by the right piston through the port openings 26 into the exhaust chamber 20. Upon a reversing movement of the piston rod, the valve in the piston to the left closes and the intake valve at the power end of the pump also closes. This movement of the pistons towards the power end of the pump results in the left piston compressing the entrapped water in the right half of the cylinder as it passes through the valve in the right piston; water in the meantimeibeing drawn from the power end of the pump through the passageway 17 and then through the intake valve at the left end of the pump. If solid matter such as lumps of coal, small rocks, etc., pass through the intake valves, the presence thereof within the cylinder will not result in damage to the pump and will eventually be shifted to the outletparts by the movement of the pistons. I
From the foregoing description, it is obvious that my invention provides a pump construction of the double acting piston valve type having the characteristics of a minimum number of durable, replaceable parts, the valve parts subject to wear being interchangeable with members comprising the pistons, the construction of the casing being such as to permit convenient separation of the casing members to interchange these parts after they have become worn when functioning as valve parts. In other words, I embody within the pump construction spare. valve parts in the piston con struction and piston rod bearing parts in the valve construction which are available at all times to any ordinary pump operator in the event of accident or breakdown, irrespective of the remoteness of locality or transportation facilities. I furthermore provide a novel stuffing box construction in the pump which affords the greatest degree of efficiency in preventing leaks and in addition thereto is of such construction that the packing glands are effective in preventing leaks without being compressed in the usual manner to an extreme degree, thereby insuring long service. I obtain the additional advantage of a simple, compact, easily manufactured double acting pump based on the uniflow principle.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In a pump of the character described, the combination witha valve and apiston rod, of a member externally supporting said valve and another member of similar size and shapeinternally supporting said piston rod, said two members being interchangeable. j
2. In a pump, the combinationof a tubular member, a piston rod guided by the internal portion of said-member, a valveslido the cylinder, intake valves positioned at the ends of the cylinder, and a pair of pistons propelled within the cylinder and respectively on opposite sides of the outlet port.

In a double acting pump of the character described, a cylinder, a casing sun rounding the cylinder, to form a discharge, an intakevalve disposed at each end of the cylinder, said casing having passageways communicating with said intake valves, a piston rod, a pair of pistons mounted thereon, and compression valves embodied in the piston structure.

In a double acting pump of the char- I acter described, a cylinder having outlet ports formed intermediate its ends, a casing surrounding the cylinder, an intake valveodisposed on opposite sides of the cyl-' inder ports, said casing having passageways communicating with said intake valves and said cylinder outlet ports, a pair ofpistons mounted thereon, and also disposed on opposite sides of outlet ports and compression valves embodied inthe piston structure.
6. In a double acting pump of the char acter described, a cylinder, a casing surrounding the cylinder, an intake valve mechanism at one end of the cylinder having a valve and a supporting member, an intake valve mechanism disposed at the other end of the cylinder, a piston rod, a pair of pistons mounted thereon, a bearing member for the rod supported by the casing, said hearing member supporting the last mentioned valve and being interchangeable with the member carrying the other intake valve.
7. In a double'acting pump of the character described, the combination of a casing having inlet and an outlet, a removable cylinder supportedtherein, inlet valves disposed within the casing at each end of the cylinder, said casing having passageways establishing communication between the inlet and said intake valves and between said cylinder and said outlet, a piston rod, a double piston structure mounted thereon comprising compression valves oppositely disposed and arranged to coact alternately with said. inlet valves upon reciprocation of said piston rod, said piston structure comprising a pair of demountable members and adapted to compressibly support packing means in contact with the cylinder wall when placed back toback and being of the same size and shape as the members comprising said intake valves.
8. In a double acting pump of the character described, the combination of a casing having inlet and an outlet, a removable cylinder supported therein, and having a discharge passageway through its wall, a member surrounding the cylinder and leading to the discharge passageway, a suction passage way leading from the ends of the cylinder. inlet valves supported by separable end members comprising the casing and disposed at each end of the cylinder, a piston rod, a double piston structure mounted thereon comprising compression valves oppositely disposed and arranged to coact alternately with said inlet valves upon reciprocation of said piston rod.
9. A double acting pump of the character described, comprising a casing formed by a central cylinder supporting member and two end members detachably secured thereto, in combination with a cylinder removably positioned within said central casing member and having the ends thereof engaged by said end casing members, intake valves supported by the end members and the ends of the cylinder, said central casing member having a passageway establishing communication between suction chambers formed in the end members, and an annular passageway establishing communication between a compression chamber formed in one of the end members and an outlet port formed in the cylinder wall intermediate its ends.
10. A. double acting pump of the character described, comprising a casing formed bya central cylinder supporting member and two end members detachably secured thereto, a cylinder removably positioned within said central casing member and having a longitudinal space between the casing member and the cylinder wall, said central casing member having a passageway establishing communication between an inlet formed in one of the end members, and another passageway establishing communication between said longitudinal space and an outlet formed in one of the end members.
11. In a pump of the character described, thecombination of a cylinder having outlet ports formed intermediate its ends, a pair of pistons adapted to reciprocate within the ylinder on each side of said outlet ports, a piston rod therefor, and coaxially disposed intake valves positioned at each end of the cylinder, one of the valves surounding the piston rod, said valves having stationary eat members which are duplicates of and nterchangeable with members comprising he pistons.
12. In a pump of the character described, the combination of a cylinder having outlet ports formed intermediate its ends, a pair of pistons adapted to reciprocate within the cylinder on each side of said outlet ports, a piston rod therefor and intake valves positioned on each side of the cylinder outlet ports, said valves comprising stationary seat members which are duplicates of and interchangeable, and adapted to surround the piston rod.
18. Ina double acting pump of the character described, the combination of a valve including a movable disk and a seat member therefor having a cylindrical portion terminating in an edge flange, a piston rod and a piston thereof comprising two duplicates of said seat member, a packing mounted on the cylindrical portion thereof and retained by such edge flanges.
