IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE RECLINING-LOUNGES.

The invention will first be fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
I will describe my invention as applied to a lounge.
A represents the base-frame of a lounge, to the four corners of which are attached feet B, in the usual way. To the corners of the head end of the frame A are attached two blocks, 0, upon the upper side of which are formed rounded or convex projections, upon which fit concavities, formed in the lower end of the side bars of the head D, which are held in place by the arms E, which are rigidly secured To said bars, and through which passes a rod, F, which also passes through the blocks 0, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower ends of the bars or arms E are widened, and are rounded off upon the arc of a circle having its axis in the center of the rod F. G is a rod, which passes through the front and rear bars of the frame A. The rod Gr slides longitudinally, and is kept from turning by being made square or by having wings or flanges formed upon the opposite sides of its end parts, and
which enter notches in the sockets, in which the said rod works. To the side of the end part of the rod G is attached a tooth, g, which enters the notches in the rounded ends of the bars E, and thus holds the head of the lounge securely in place. H is a spring, the lower end of which is attached to the end of the cross-bar of the frame A, and its upper end is attached to a rod, I, attached to the head frame D, so that the said spring H may raise the head D when the arms E are released from teeth g. The rod G is held forward to keep the teeth g of the said rod G in gear with the teeth of the bars E by a coiled spring, J, placed upon the said rod G, and one of its ends rests against a pin or other stop attached to said rod G. The other end of the spring J is supported by a cord, strap, or bar, K, attached to the frame A. In the same way the device may be attached to the back and seat frame of a chair.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with blocks 0 and head D, the latter turning on the former, and held forward by a spring, H, of the arms E, havin g spurred are at the lower ends, the rod F, and the slide-rod Gr, having part pinion near each end, as and for the purpose specified.
