L. E. DELSON ILLUSTRATED LETTERHEAD Filed Sept. 14 925 CENTRAL ADVERTISING COMPANY (LETTERHEAD) Fi 5. Back view ILLUSTRATIVE NAT T ER Fig.1.
lLLUSTRATIVE nag-Ten (211L131) INVENTOR Patented Sept. 21, 1926.
LOUIS E, DELSON', or
ILLUSTRATED Application filed September y invention relates to commercial stationery, advertising folders particularly to letterheads.
The objects of my invention are to provide a letterhead adapted to carry, in addition to the usual name and address and the text matter of a letter, a display advertise. ment or printed reproduction. This would provide a space measuring approximat ly 8"x 17 to carry the advertisement of go ds offered by the merchant or advertiser, such display advertisement being of pictorial character of fixed form, such as that standardized by him, in obtaining publicity for his products, but which pictorial display shall not trespass upon the portion of the letterhead reserved for the usual name and address at the top of a letterhead, and in conjunction therewith to provide a letterhead in usual form adapted to be varied so as to be usable by agents in different localities, whose names and addresses may be printed thereon, a separate letterhead imprint being provided for each agent, as well as for the advertiser in his own use of this illustrated letterhead. The foregoing and other objects of my invention will appear from the following specification and the drawings accompanying same. In the draw-. ings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a plan view of the illustrated letterhead adapted to be folded upon the dotted line A A; Figure 2 is a like view of the sheet when folded; and Figure 3 is a back view of the sheet unfolded. In these drawings, 1 is the body of the illustrated letter, size approximately 8"x8 adapted to receive the written contents of-the letter, to be folded upon the dotted line A A, and 2 is the standard printing surface, measuring approximately 16"x8", and 3 is the individual letterhead, measuring approxi mately 3"x8 adapted to be folded as to caption. l
In carrying out my invention, I provide an illustrated letterhead, preferably longer than the standard size of a letterhead, the standard size of a letterhead being approximately 8 x 11 The preferred embodiment of my invention is an illustrated letterhead 19" long, the lower portion having a length of 8" being folded over on the body of the letterhead, thus leaving 3" visible for the usual letterhead. over portion and that part of the letterhead covered thereby there is displayed such printed matter, preferably in the form of a pictorial illustration or reproduction of an advertisement as may be adapted by the merchant as his standard or fixed formvof illustration for the goods, wares, merchanise or service dealt in by'him. This form of display advertisement is preferably a one color or a ,colored print of copyrightable character, whose characteristics essentially partake of those of a trade mark, in that it denotes the origin of the goods and is in such fixed invariable form as may be familiar to the public as identifying products of that maker, or an advei tisement used to further the sale of his me chandise, wares or serv-' ices. The folded over portion of the letterhead normally conceals this advertisement. Upon this folded over portion is multigraphed, typewritten or written the letter or communication, together with the salutation and signature of the manufacturer or merchant or of the agent or dealer representing him in a given territory accompanied by a description of the goods dealt in for advertiser.
These standard illustrated letterheads may be printed in chant and supplied by him to his agents. The stationery so supplied to each particular agent can also. bear the imprint of the name of the manufacturer. Whenthe name of the agent is imprinted instead the stationery becomes the agents individual letterhead by imprinting upon the upper part, measuring approximately 8 x 3" caption with his name or the name under which he transacts business, together with his address and suitable date line. The stat-ionery thus used by each agent in his business correspondence bears his personal letterhead, together with the general display ad ertising matter of his principal.
The illustrated letterhead embodying my invention arouses, by its novelty, the interest of the recipient of the goods featured thereon, and upon his lowering the folded over letter serves to impress with a more vivid concept of the advertisement illus-. trated. My invention has special utilities which enables the merchant to print letterheads inlarfer quantities and therefore at less cost an considerable economy, particquantities by the mer ularly vvhere color printing is used to supply quantities to each agent from stock, as
required, without reprinting or waste-of It will be understood that various ifPfmS' and preparations ofchanges in the my illustratedletterhead may be made without. departure-from the appearance of my invention or sacrifice of any of its advantages, as, for example, the sheet need not be of standard commercial size but may be of irregular size or form, since folded over portidn may be any part thereof, which namely that special letter space may can be suitably used for the letter. multigraphed, printed or typewritten letter borne thereby may be either upon the folded over flap or on the body of the sheet, separately or may be common to both, so long asthe articular feature of the utility afforded by the folded over part is attained,
be obtained by a parent concern and furnished in stock form to its agents individualiz'ed for each. Thus any particular article reduced may be featured, together with a universal trade markor advertisement, while on the front part of the flap, the particular agents letter is printed, typewritten or multigraphed. whereby a large number of letters may be made up and adapted for only a particular use, ticular goods featured, but these will be available for a number of different agents Without change of the picture display. Standard advertising is thus assured the principal, personal stationery and letter to the individual agent, or an application of bo'th to the principal.

Having thus described my invention, I claim: v
