EDWARD P. SHURICK, `OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.v
GOMBINED LETTER AND ENVELOPE'STUFFER 0R THE (p To .all whom tmay concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. SHURICK, a citizen of the'United States, residing at Knoxville, in the county-of Knox, State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements| in Combined Letter and Envelope Stuffers or the like, of which the following is a description, reference being vhad to the accompanying drawing and t0 the figures of reference marked thereon. Thisv invention relates to mailing devices, and more particularly to a combined letter and broadside or the like'adapted to be inserted in an envelope to be mailed.
Heretofore, in direct-by-mail advertising, whenever it has been desirable to send out a sales letter or the like with a descriptive pamphlet, leaflet, folder or envelope stuffer, it has been necessary to enclose' the pamphlet, leaflet orthe like, in with the letter loosely. Due to the fact that the letter and the enclosure were on separate sheets of paper, many times the enclosure would be left in the envelope, be lost, or be destroyed. To prevent this, it has generally been the practice to clip the enclosure to the letter by means of a clip or fastener.'
The present invention has for its principal object the elimination of all these dificulties by providing a letter sheet adapted for general correspondence, in which the letter is provided with an integral extension adapted to fold on the edge line of and into the limits of the let-ter sheet to provide .a distinct folder, leaflet or the like composed of one or more folds adapted for any necessary use, such as a .price list, advertisingmatter, a sample holder, a check, draft or thelike, and such folder being also capable of carrying and enclosing additional sheets or samples or the like.
Still another object of this invention is to provide a device of the character described in which the letter sheet is provided with a distinctive portion segregated from the writing field of the letter sheet and adapted for the purpose'desired. said distinctive portion having an integral extension adapted to form a desired number of folds and foldable on the edge line of and into the limits of the distinctive portion to provide a folder or the like for the purpose desired.
Another object of this invention resides inv providing a letter sheet with a distinctively colored portion segregated from the Specification of Letters Patent. .Application led December 14, 1921.

writing field o f the letter sheet and provlded with an integral' extension also slmi- ,larly distinctively colored and foldablev along the edge of the letter sheet into the l1m1ts of the segregated portion to provide a folder adapted to receive printed matter, samples and the like.
These and other objects will in part be l obvious and will fully disclosed. In the accompanying drawings:-
Figure 1 is a view of the letter sheetwith the extension folded within the letter sheet; Fig. 2 1s a similar view with the extenslon. opened; and
1g. 3 isv a view of the folder provided with additional leaves.
Flg. 4 is a specific form of Fig. l.
The invention combines two separate forms now in general use, namely a letter sheet and an envelope stuffer, broadside, price 11st, booklet, pamphlet, or leaet or the like. In the drawings the former is shown as a letter'sheet l, provided with the usual heading 2, and the blank field 3 adapted for general correspondence, such as a typewrltten, mimeographed, ,or multiin part be hereinafter more formed with a distinctive portion 4' segregated from the writing field 3 of the letter. his appearance of segregation may be accentuated in any desired manner, as by a blank border line 5, or by appropriately ruled lines 6, or by giving the distinctive portion a separate color or tint, as is preferred. This portion 4 is ofdesired size, preferably of size and shape to correspond with the interior fold-'lines or creases X, Y, or Z on which the letter sheet is folded in order to properly insert it in an envelope as customary. In this manner, the distinctive portion will not be' bent or become rumpled. Obviously such distinctive portion may be located atl other desired portions of the letter sheet, such as on the bottom, top, orv

form, the extension 7 1s shown as a single leaf 8 adapted to receive any desired printed matteror the like on one or' both sides; such, for instance, as the price list or catalog illustrated. This extension folds on line 9 which is a continuation or extension of the border or edge line of the letter sheet. By this fold, the extension can be turned or Afolded back into the limits of the letterl sheet and since the fold 8 is of the same size and shape as the portion 4, it will fold onto this portionI 4 and form a cover for it, as shown in Fig. 1. rIhe obverse face of this extension 7 shown in Figpl --is -provided generally with any appropriate folder or leaiet heading or facing. While the reverse face thereof shown in Fig. 2`is provided with desired printed or Written matter or other data and information.
While in the present instancethis extension is vshown as carrying printed matter in the form'of a' price list or catalog, it is within the contemplation o'f this invention to form this extension as a check, draft, or the like, in which case it is desirable to vform the line 9 as a perforated line to permit easy detachment of the same. In certain other cases, the lettersheet may take the form of an invoice or statement, and the foldable extension may be utilized for advertising purposes as before described. So also where the distinctive portion 4: is of particular shape, as for instance, a bottle of medicine, phonograph, can of soup, or a lock, the extension 8 is made of size, shape and appearance to correspond. The obverse and ref verse'faces of the extension of such. outline there may be a single'leaf attached in a preferred manner, and this sheet may contain printed matter or may have` pasted or attached thereto samples of various description'. The advantages-of the form shown in Fig. 3 will be readily appreciated fory the reason that in present-day business a large manufacturing firm making ten or twelve Lemmi different Iproducts has alarge general correspondence daily. By means of the form shownin Fig. 3, the firm can turn over to `cover some other one of their ten products,
and all general letters sent out'that month would be on that form. This same idea is applicable to ,the form shown in Fig. 1, except that the entire letter would havel to b e reprinted Iwith a corresponding number of different distinctive portions. At pres .fent,` when firms advertise in this manner, they not only have to pay for an extra envelope stuifer but have to pay an additional amount for its' insertion in the envelope.
It will be obvious from the abovel descrip- 4tion that the invention has many advantages in that both letter sheet and stuffer., pamphlet or the like may be printed at one time, thus reducing the cost of the two items now printed separately; that the envelope stuifer, pamphlet, folder or lealiet being a part of the letter, statement, invoice or other printed matter cannot be lost -or become lde tached; that it` providesan envelope stufler or lthe like which is -the proper size for a standard file and .will be filed with the letter attached in such file 5 thatl the advertising value of the printed matter is greatly enhanced owing to the fact that a prospect, when he opensthe letter, haslbefore him, at one time, the letter, samples, pricelist and description so that he can read over the proposition Without laying down the letter topick up the pamphlet or vice versa; that furthermore the general appearance of the letter is made more attractive and interest ing by the distinctively colored appearance of the folder, andthat by reason of this distinctive appearance the folder'appears to vbe separate from the letter.
It 1s obvious that the invention is capable .of `various and sundry .modifications and that the scope of the invention is not to be restricted except by the language of the following claims.
Having thus described the invention, what isclaimed as new is f' 1. A device of the class'described comprising a letter sheet having an integral flap or extension provided with suitable indicia, said ap or extension being of less len `h than the side of said letter sheet of which it isa part, said flap being'foldable on and within `the marginal line of the letter sheet in and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the class described comprising a letter head having aletter portion and tegral extension foldable on and within the marginal. line of the letter head and of less length than the marginal line of the letter head on which it folds,l said extension having substantially the same distinctive appearance on both sides thereof as said segregated portion.
3. A device of the class described coinprising in one piece; a headed letter sheet adapted for general business correspondence and an envelope stuifer, said envelope stuffer comprising a desirable number of flaps adapted to fold into the body of the letter head thereby simulating a letter head with i adapted to be folded on the border line, and.
Within 'the limits of the letter sheet, and a an apparently separate envelope stuffer attached thereto.
4. A device of `rthe class described comprising a letter sheet having an integral flap or extension having indicia thereon and desired number 'of sheets secured to said let- 'rter sheet and arranged to form the desired number of inner leaves for said folder.
5. A device of the class described comprising a letter sheet provided with' a heading normally placed thereon and a written message, said letter sheet having an integral flap or extension provided Withv suitable indicia, said ap' oreXtension being disposed so as to fold on and within the marginal lineof the letter sheet and arranged so that when folded it will 'not cover the letter heading nor the message on the letter sheet.
6. A device of the class described comprising a standard letter head having an integral extensionv having suitable ,indicia thereon adapted to fold on and Within the marginal line of the letter headso as to simulate a separate attachment, said integral extension being of such dimensions and disposedso as to fold Within the standard folded lines or creases when the letter head is folded in the' customary manner whereby the extension is not bent in folding the letter. n
7. A device-of the class described comprising a letter sheet-having an integral flap or extension shaped to resemble in contour and appearance an articlelof merchandise` to, be
advertised, said flap or extensionbeing foldable on vand Within'the marginal line of the letter sheet.
In testimony Whereof,-I ax my signature.
