IMPROVEMENT IN RElN-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 160,028, dated February 23, 1875; application filed December 31, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OARMI Oseoon, of East Hardwick, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rein-Holders; and I do hereby declare that the followin g is a full, clear, and exact description there of, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to improvements in rein-holders for carriages, for the purpose of securing the reins whenever the driver wishes to leave the carriage or vehicle, so as to prevent the animal from running away, and also for the purpose of preventing the reins from dragging on the ground.

My invention consists of a small metallic frame or piece that, for convenience sake, is made in two halves, so as to be easily attached to the dash-board, in which metallic piece is movable a pair of adjustable wedge-shaped bars, so that when a rein is placed in the side opening of said holder and the wedge-shaped bar drawn outward, the rein is wedged firmly between the wedge and the slotted holder, as will now be more fully shown and described.

On the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my invention, showing the wedge as forced into the frame on the right-hand side, and showing the wedge drawn out on the left-hand side, in a position as required when the rein is locked to the holder. Fig. 2 representsa ground plan. Fig. 3 represents a central longitudinal section; and Fig. 4 represents a central cross-section of the same.

Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the diiferent parts of the drawings.

(0 represents the ordinary dasher of a carriage or other vehicle, and 1) represents the metallic cross-bar usually employed above the dasher. c 0 represents the frame of my improved rein-holder, that is made in two halves, as shown in Fig. 2, and terminates below as projecting plates or lips d d, between which the dasher is located. The two parts 0 c are held firmly together by means of the set-screw wedges or inclines h h, tend to force the wedges g g against the reins that are laid on the openings i 1 when the above-named wedges g g are drawn out sidewise, by which operation the reins are held firmly in any required position. The outer ends of the holder are provided with lips or projections 70 k, so as to prevent the reins from slipping out from the openings '0' i, when the wedges g g are drawn out.

To operate my invention it is only necessary to place the'reins in the openings 1' i, and to draw out the wedges g 9, when the reins become firmly secured to the rein-holder.

When it is desired to release the reins, the wedges g g are pushed back into the case or frame c c, and the reins can then instantly be removed from the holder.

Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- 1. The rein-holder, consisting of a case or frame, 0 c, with its stationary inclines h h, the openings 1' 1", and the tips or projections k It, all combined as and for the purpose set forth.

2. In combination with the case or frame 0 c, the movable wedges or rods 9 g, as and for the purpose set forth.
