PAPER FOLDING BOX AND THE LIKE.
Application filed July 17, 1922. Serial No. 575,451.
This invention relates to improvements in pa er folding boxes,having particular re erence to paper folding boxes, or cartons, adapted when open to display their contents or a sample of their contents,the type of box being especially adaptable for display goods, as toilet articles, chewing gum, etc., on counters and shelves of retail stores.
An object of the invention is to provide a folding box of this character of simple construction,the entire box being made of one piece of aper stock-which will have a foldable ap formed in the bottom thereof, adapted when adjusted to act as a support to hold the box raised at an angle so that the contents of the box will be displayed to better advantage.
A further object of the invention 1s to provide foldable margins along the upper side edges and along a portion of the 11d of the box which serve to improve the appearance of the box when open, and also to reinforce the construction and to hold the lid in open position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel arrangement for carrying an advertisement on the outside of the lid which will be brought to the desired position relative to the contents of the box, to present the advertisement effectively when the box is opened and arranged as a display device.
Other features of the invention relate to details of construction, which tend to improve and cheapen the product, and which will be described in the detailed speclfication.
In the accompanying drawings, the improved box is illustrated in a numberiof modified forms of preferred construction,-- the characteristics of the invention being expressed in each form.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the one-piece paper blank from which the box is made in one form, and the manner of cutlting the stock to minimize waste of materla Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a folding box made of a blank illustrated in Fig. 1,the lid of the box being open, and the flap arranged to support the box at an angle;
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the box i1- lustrated in Fig. 2 taken on'lines 3-3, the
lid of the box and the supporting flap bemg n closed relation Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the box in knocked-down form as arranged for handling a-ndshipping in bulk;
Flg. 5 1s a perspective view of the box set up for displaying its contents.
As here shown, the box illustrated in Figs. 1 to 4 is made of a single piece of paper which is scored to form the folding lines of the form, the folding lines acting to divide the form into parts -1, 2, -3, 4, which are adapted to be folded relative to each other to form the rectangular-shaped body of the box,part -4 havin a marginal extension 5 which is a apted to overlap and to be pasted to the coacting edge of part 1 to hold the parts together.
The lid of the box is formed of parts 6 and -7 scored on medial lines 8 to 1'0- vide for folding one part of the lid relative to the other,part 7 having a flap --9 foldable on line ---10 and adapted to overlap the edge of the box, as illustrated in Fig. 3, when the lid is closed. Webs or flanges -11, foldable inwardly in a compound fold on lines -12, -13 and -14. when the box is closed, are interposed between parts 2 and -4 respectively, and part 6 of the lid to strengthen the construction, to hold the lid in raised position and to improve the appearance of the box when used as a display device. Part -6 of the lid has a part -15 of ornamental design cut out thereof,-the part being in effect an upward extension of part --7 when part --7 is folded inwardly over part 6 as best illustrated in Fig. 2, and serving to provide space for part of an advertisement displayed on the lid. The advertisement is printed on the outer surface of parts -7 and 15 and will face invf vardly when the lid is folded as shown in The bottom of the box consists of foldable parts slotted on lines --19 and 20 and scored on lines --21, 22, and 23, and folded in relation one to the other, as illustrated in Fig. 3,parts -16 and 18 being folded longitudinally and part 17 transversely of the box to form the bottom thereof,-part -17 having a marginal flap 24 foldable on line -25 and adapted to overlap the lower edge of the box and to be pasted down to bind the parts together. Part 18 has a flap -26 partially cut out thereof, and adapted to be bent outwardly on line -27 and to be shaped into a support, as illustrated in Fig. 2, to hold one end of the box in raised osition to better present the contents of t e box to view,the edge 28 of the flap being adapted to be tucked into a retaining flap --29 formed in part 17 to hold flap 26 in its adjusted position. As shown in Fig. 3 the flap -26 and Webs 11 are folded fiat within the outer lines of the box when the parts are in closed relation. In the relation of the box illustrated in Fig. 2 bottom portion 18 is intermediate portions 16 17, thus the aperture in part 18 caused by severing part 26-28 therefrom is covered on opposite sides to form a closed bottom of the box.
The knocked-down form of the box illustrated in Fig. 4-represents merely common practice in preparing paper folding boxes for handling and shipping in bulk.
The feature of novelty of the general arrangement of arts 6 -7 and consists in the adaptab1 ity of the parts together with the coacting part of the lid to have an advertisement printed on the outside thereof, and to properly display the advertisement on the box either as closed or open. This permits of printing all desired subject matter on the box in one operation and tends, therefore, to cheapen the product.
Having described my invention, I claim: A paper folding box formed of stoneplece lank comprising top and' bottom portions arran ed 111 a straight line one with another, side and end portions contiguous in a straight line one with another extended at right angles to and intermediate said top and bottom portions, other bottom ortions arranged at right angles to said side and end portions, extended laterally therefrom parallel with said first named bottom portion, said bottom portions being adapted to be folded in superposed relation one part to another to form the bottom of the box, an intermediate bottom portion having a art severed therefrom, remaining attache to an end portion, adapted to be extended downward and shaped into a pedestal and interlocked with the lowermost bottom portion to support the box at an angle to display the contents thereof.
In testimony whereof, I aflix m si nature.
SAMUEL BER S EIN.
