Application filed May 24, 1926. Serial No. 111,124.
The present invention relates to a toy or novelty, particularly to an improved articulated body made to represent a snake. The device is intended to provide a loose 6 jointed, flexible body which will wriggle and twist in such a manner as to imitate in a lifelike manner the writhings of a snake, and for this purpose consists of an articulated body made of a number of sections which are l permanently, held upon a central, flexible supporting web. p
Devices of this. general type have been made prior to this invention, but have been made of sections ofwood. cemented to a central fabric strip. The object of the present invention is to im rove upon prior structures such as described by the manufacture of an imitation snake having a greater flexibility and sensitiveness than prior structures and one which'is more-lasting and less liable to injury or destruction. It is also a purpose,of the invention to manufacture a device of this type which will resist the action of water so that it can be used in swimming pools or beaches without danger of disintegration. 1
The purposes of the invention are obtained by the device shown and described herein, in which- Figure 1 is a, plan view of the toy snake of the present invention;
Figure 2 is a side view; Figure 3 is a cross-section through one of the sections of the device;' and Figure 4 is an enlarged section of several adjacent sections of the device. For accomplishing the purposes of the invention, the toy snake is molded in a single, integral body of rubber vulcanized about a 4 long, narrow strip of fabric, the body having a plurality of deep notches entering from either side so that it is formed in a plurality of separate divisions or sections connected by narrow webs of rubber. The rubber surrounds and protects the fabric in the interior of the body. The shape of the body represents a snake, as shown, although other forms may be adopted. One end of the body is molded to form a head.
The body is indicated at 10 and is shown as tapering and rounded to imitate a snake, one end being formed with a head 11 and the other end with a tail 12. Passing through the body is a strip or web of fabric being elongated to represent a. snake or the 13 whichreinforces the body and prevents bending, except in a' horizontal plane. The body is divided by a plurality of deep notches 14 in registry with one another, but spaced at their inner ends sufliciently to form a connecting web of rubber 15 which 6 protects the fabric at the side. and still forms a yielding, flexible body.
Any suitable rubber composition may be employed, but it is preferred to form the body of the snake of a rubber of specific gravity less than water so that it will float. For this purpose a sponge rubber composition may be employed. The mold in which the snake is vulcanized may be formed with depressions to reproduce a scale-like surface on'the snake.
It is possible by mixing rubber of diflerent color compositions to'obtain striped or mottled efiects to further simulate the. appearance of a snake.
The toy snake here shown is very flexible and lends itself to a life-like reproduction of the movements of the live reptile. It is sensitive and if held in the middle will wrig gle and twist, tipping of the body in any direction causing the body to writhe in a very life-like manner. 4 I
What is claimed is:
1. A toy snake formed of a single integral body of vulcanized rubber composition, the 8 body being divided in sections by a plurality of deep registering notches, and a fabric reinforce centrally of the body, the notches reaching nearly to the fabric but spaced therefrom so as to provide connecting webs of rubber between the several sections and surrounding and protecting the fabric.
2. A toy formed of a single one-piece body of vulcanized rubber composition, the body like, the body being provided with'a plurality of deep registering notches which divide it into a plm'ality of sections, and thin webs of rubber connecting the sections 50 as to form a very flexible and sensitjve body.
3. A toy formed of a single one-piece body of vulcanized rubber composition, the body being elongated to represent a snake or the like, the body being provided with a plurality of deep registering notches which divide it into a plurality of sections, thin webs of rubber connecting the sections so as to form a very flexible and sensitive body and ing provided with a plurality of deep a fabric Web embedded Within the body registering notches which divide it inthroughout the length thereof.
4. A toy formed of a single one-piece body 5 of vulcanized rubber composition lighter than water, the bodybeing elongated to represent a sna ke or the like, the body beto a plurality of sections, and thin webs of 10 rubber connecting the sections so as to form a very flexible and sensitive body.
