Description
A. G. HOWARD.
Leather-Strap Skiving-Machine. I N0,159,822, Patented Feb. 16,1875.
WITNESSES I INVENTOR ATTORN EYS PARK PLAOLNX.
PATENT ALBERT G. HOWARD, OF FARMINGTON, MAINE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LEATHER-STRAP-SKIVING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 59,822, dated February 16, 1875; application filed January 23, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT G. HOWARD, of Farmington, in the county of Franklin and State of Maine, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Leather-Strap-Skiving Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of a plan view of my machine. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a sectional view.
This invention has relation to machines for skiving leather; and it consists in the combination of an adjustable cutter, an adjustable pressure-sprin g, and a spring-guide, as will be understood from the following description.
In the annexed drawings, A designates the frame of the machine, which is a rectangular piece of metal designed to be rigidly secured to some established object. 13 designates a knife, having an enlargement, a, on one end, through which a slot, 1), is made. A bolt, 0, passes through the slot 1) and through the frame A, and is provided with a nut on one end for tightening the knife when it is properly adjusted. O designates a spring, one end of which is held in place by means of a stud, d, and the other end is curved upward to facilitate the passage of the leather beneath it. A
screw, 0, is rigidly fixed into the upper side of.
the frame A, which passes loosely through the spring (1, near the middle of its length, and receives a thumb-nut, f, on it. It is by means of this nutf that the spring G can be adjusted for different thicknesses of leather, and for giving different degrees of pressure on the leather. D designates a guide-pin, which is inserted into the frame A, and held up against the bottom side of the knife B by means of a spring, g. The pin D is adjustable for the purpose of allowing the knife to be secured at any desired angle with respect to the top of the frame A.
After properly adjusting the knife B and spring 0 the skiving is performed by simply drawing the leatherbeneath these parts, keeping the edge of the leather up close against the pin D.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iS-r The combination of the spring guide D with the knife B and pressure-spring (J, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT G. HOWARD. Witnesses:
BENJ. I ATKINSON, P. DYER.
