WILLIAM BIGLER HUBER, OF FREMON'I, NEBRASKA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CHARLES O. LOBEOK, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR EDGENG SHEET METAL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 316,461, dated April 28., 1885.
Application led Setepinber 8. 1884.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern,.-
Beit known. that I, WILLIAM B. HUBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fremont, in the county of Dodge and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Edging Sheet Metal, of which the following is aspecitcation, to .witz
This invention relates to an improvement in machines for making sheetmetal seams; and it consists in a grooved base-plate, 'to which is hinged a pressure plate or die, in combination with a clamp having oblique slots and a metal guard, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring tothe aceompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is'an end view, and Fig. 2 a crosssection, showing the machine in ditt'erent positions. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, and Fig. 4 a View of the joint or seam formed on this machine.
A represents a base-plate supported upon.
- legs A and formed with a groove, a, as
shown, extending longitudinallyr from end to end in its upper face.
To the rear side of the base-plate A is hinged a pressure-plate, B, having on its for ward lower corner an angle-plate, B', between the lower angle, b, of which and the pressureplate the metal is held while under operation. The out-er angle of the plate B is provided with oblique'slots b', (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3,) and is adapted to have a motion Vboth downward and endwise upon screws or bolts o o, passing through these slots into the pressure-plate. These screws or bolts also pass through and retain in place a guard, C, which keeps the work in position.
The end of the pressure-plate B is provided with a handle, D, pivoted at d, and. provided with a small slot, ci', on its under side, which engages with a pin, c', on the angie-plate B', as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3.
(No model.)
The operation of this device is as follows: The pressure-plate is thrown back to the position seen in Fig. l, and the end of the plate of sheet metal is pushed beneath the part b of the plate B', where it is firmly held. The pressure-plateis now pulled forward to the position seen in Fig. 2, which forms the outer bend in the joint. To form the shoulder at the inner edge of the joint, the handle D is now pulled endwise, and draws the angleplate B outward and downward, forcing the sheet of metal into the groove a of the base plate, and as it is held firmly bythe guard O, which presses the main body of the sheet down and compels the forming of :a sharp oorner, it is bent to the form shown by Fig. 4. Two pieces of metal having been thus formed are put together, and, the joint being hammered down, the seam is complete.
The machine is exceedingly simple, and is especially adapted to forming seams in stovepipe, household articles, and for similar uses.
Having thus fully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a sheet-metal-seaming machine, a longitudinally grooved base plate having a hinged pressure-plate, in combination with a movable clamp adapted to hold the metal during the first part of the operation, and then to be projected into the grooved baseplate to complete the bending, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a sheet-metal-bending machine, the base-plate A, having groove a, and hinged pressure-plate B, in combination with the plate B', formed with oblique slots b', guard C, bolts o o, and pivoted handle D, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM BIGLER HUBER.
Witnesses:
CHAs. O. LoBEoK, WILLIAM MARTIN.
