R A. KOMER CONTAINER FOR (.IGARETTES Filed March 24v 1924 mil/m1 v 7 7'0 ENE Y Patented Aug. 17, 1926.
UNITED STATES ROBERT A. KOMER, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI con'ranmn r on creaan'r'rns.
Application filed March 24, 1924. Serial No. 701,456.
This invention relates to a certain new and useful improvement in cigarette-containers and has for its-chief object the provision. as anew article of manufacture. of a container integrally combining a chamber or receptacle for a package or quantity of cigarettes and safety matches with lighting means for the contained cigarettes, the container as a whole being of simple and inexpensive construction, compact in form, and efficient and convenient in use. 1
Withthe above and other objects in view,
my present invention resides in the novel features of form, constructlon, arrangement,
and combination of parts hereinafter de scribed and afterwards pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a container embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view of the container;
Figure 3 is an open plan view'of the scored or divided blank employed in theformation of the container; and i Figure 4 is a view of the panel-providing blank .as folded in the formation of the container.
Referring now more in detail and by reference characters to the drawing. which illustrates a preferred embodiment of my in= vention, A indicates the container blank, which is preferably of any suitable relatively flexible for bendable material, such as, for instance, paper, light-weight card-board, or the like. The blank A. which is approximately of rectangular-oblong form. isof suitable dimensions, length and breadth, as may be desired in the height. width, and capacity of the-finished or complete container. and is transversely scored or otlffiwise marked for convenient folding at spaced intervals throughout its length. as at 1, 2, 3. 4, 5. 6. 7. 8, 9, and 10. and is thus integrally divided into a plurality of adjoining panels adapted to form the top, rear, and opposite side walls of the body-portion or match-compartment of the container. As so constructed and scored or otherwise marked, the blank A is folded upon the lines form, the blank end-panel 11 being brought over into fiatwise registration with and pref- 1, 2, 3,4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and 10 into containererably adhesively fixed to the intermediate panel 12, which latter panel is disposed between the folding lines 8 and 9. The intermediate bl'ank- panels 13 and 14, which are, respectively, disposed between the folding lines 3 and 4 and 4 and 5, are then folded not 'onlyapproximately fiatwise together, but also, as best seen in Figure 4, to overlie a side margin of the intermediate blank-panel 15, which latter panel is disposed between the folding or bending lines 1 and 2. A strip including a plurality of ordinary or common so-called breakable paper safetymatches, or cigarette-lighting members B, as I term them,- is then disposed fiatwise upon the blank-panel 15, the strip proper being interposed under the overlying flap formed by the fiatwise registering intermediate blankpanels 13 and 14, the thickness of such match strip being accommodated by the folded and also substantially registering intermediate corner blank-panels 16 and 17 which are, re-
blank-panel 15, not only is the blank A securely held in finished container form, its one endpanel 11 being, as stated, adhesively fixed fiatwise to and upon the. intermediate blankpanel 12, but the atch-strip B is-firmly and permanently ached to and forms substantially an integral part of the container.
With the blank A so folded and secured,
i-tssaid fiatwise disposed and fixed together panels 11 and 12 form one side wall of the ,contgainer, its intermediate-panel 18, which resi' es between the. folding-lines 6 and 7 forms the opposite side wall of the container,
and its intermediate- panels 15 and 19, which latter panel resides between the folding lines 7 and 8, form respectively, tom walls of the top and botthe container, the opposite blank end-panel 2O folding smoothly and substantially fiatwise over and upon and providing a cover for the matches B, as clearly seenin Fgures 1 and 2% As will be evident,
and as illustrated in Figure 2,'the free edge of the flap or match-cover 20' may be conveniently disposed and releasably secured under the match-overlappin flap formed mediate corner blank-panel 21 which resides between the folding-lines 9 and 10.
At "one side edge, the blank A is further divided, as at 22 and 23, to also comprise panel-extensions which are adapted to pro- 1 vide or form end- flaps 24 and 25, the latter flap 25 being also scored or otherwise marked for folding, as at 26, 27, 28,. and 29. As so scored or marked, the flap 24 is first folded downwardly and the flap 25 then, at the lines 26, 27, 28, and 29, folded, as best seen in v Figure 4, inwardly and upwardly upon and secured, preferably adhesively, to the flap 24 to form the end-wall of the container.
The finished container is thus approximately rectangular in form and provides an open-end convenient and handy receptacle for a quantity of cigarettes shown in the present instance in package-form, as at D, sealed in the container as an original package by means of a stamp or the like E.
' My new container may be easily constructed either manually or by machine and provides ready at hand matches for the lighting of the several contained-cigarettes as they are removed from the package. It
will be evident that, if desired, the container may be constructed of sufliciently strong and durable material to enable its repeated employment as a carrier of cigarettes and the like; preferably, however, the container is inexpensively constructed for discarding on. removal of the original package of cigarettes and, to that end, is equipped with matches B substantially corresponding in number with the contained cigarettes, for the convenient lighting or ignition of which matches the container is also preferably provided with a suitable emery or scratching surface, as at 30, upon the exposed blank-portion or flap I4.
I am aware that changes in the form; construction, arrangement, and combination of the several parts of the container may be made and substituted for those herein shown I and described without, departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
