.Application `filed NovemberV My invention relates to pins, such as breast pins,brooches, barrettes and the like.

In such articles it has been attempted, in order to avoid the use of solder, to fix the to the body by clinching or riveting the depending shanks of the members to lateral inturned flanges upon the back of the body, from which the members easily escaped; or by inserting the shanks into cavities moulded in the back of the body, and extending only a short distance into the body. In which case the body had to be composed of a. mouldable material such as glass, which made it useless as an article of jewelry, and made any attempt to expand the shanks in the cavities impossible because of the inaccessibility of the shanks, and the fragibility of' body.

The essential objects of my invention are to nio-unt the joint and catch members without solder firmly and immovably; also to effect this end in a body of any material and without defacing the front or exposed surface of the body. Further objects are to f utilize the joint and catch members to assist in maintaining the cup settings of the ornaments in place, and to attain these results in an inexpensive structure.

To ,the above ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of parts as fall within the scope of the appended claims..

In the drawings 8 represents the body of a pin or similar article of any preferred shape and of suitable material. In this instance the body is oblong and has laterally tapering ends It is provided intermediate its length with a centrally disposed longitudinal series of holes 10 extending` completely through the body from front to back.

The joint 22 herein sho-wn comprises a base 23, ears 24, and a pintle 26 for a pin tongue 28. The joint 22 has integral with its base a tubular shank 30 adapted to extend through the body in contact with the inner face of one of the stems 15 and has its forward end expanded, by swaging, into a flaring' portion 31, tightly engaging the wall of the cup 14 upon the end of the stem 15 and exterior or in front of the body 8, all as shown in Figure 3. The catch 33 has, as shown, a base 35 carrying the hook 37. Integral with the base is ay tubular shank 39 adapted to fit in the stem 15 through which it extends. The end portion of the shank extending beyond the front of the body 8 is by swaging or otherwise expanded into a flaring portion 40 against the cup 14, as shown in Figure 5.

The members 22 and 23 are obviously spaced from each other any preferred distance, as the dimensions of the stems 15 are uniform, and the tubular shanks 30 and 39 are of relatively corresponding dimensions. It is also evident that the swaging operations precede the insertion of the ornaments 18.

Not only are those setting members which are engaged by the shanks of the joint and catch maintained more firmly in engagement with thevbody 8, but the location ofthe. expanded portions 31 and 40 exterior of the body 8 facilitates the expanding operation and affords a maximum degree of holding power for the joint and catch. Furthermore the ornaments 18 completely conceal the expanded portions 31 and 40.

I claim 1. In a pin,'a body, gem sett-ings mounted in the body and projecting from the front thereof, ornaments in the settings, a pin joint supported in one setting and projecting from the rear of the body, a pin catch carriedby another setting and projecting from the rear of the body, and a pin tongue mounted in the catch.

2. In a pin, a body provided with holes extending through the body, gem settings comprising oups disposed in front of the body, and tubular stems integral with the joint engageable with the oups seated in the holes, ornaments fixed in the oups, a joint disposed `in the rear of the body, a tubular shank upon the joint eX- tending through one of the stems, a,V flaring portion upon the shank engaging the eup carried by said stein, a eatohvsupported in the stem of another setting, and a prin tongue in the joint. engegeable with the catch.

3.
