Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sent. Tull, rare.
hpplication filed May 17, 1915. Serial No. 28,527.
2'2; (lath/171.0712 itma a concern:
lie it known that l, JOHN C. WACHA, a citizen of the United Statesresiding at Providence, in the county of Irovidence and State of llhode Island, have invented certain new and useful lrnpro emcnts in Chains, of the following is a specification.
My invention. relates to chains adapted. use in the jewelry art for bracelets, rings, Watches and the like.
The essential objects of my invention are to avoid the use of solder; to atlord longitudinal flexibility of the chain but gr-event lateral movement thereof; to insure such strength. oi connection of the units as to prevent breaking or loss of the latter; to pro' vide a unit consisting; oi a single piece of material and which dispenses with the use of independent connecting; pins, screws, or rivets; to afiord a maximum of space for tie stone or ornamental surface: and to attain these ends in a structure inexpensive to manufacture, and "wherein units may be eas"y removed or substituted.
To the above ends essentially my invention consists in such partsand combinations of parts as fall Within the scope of the appended claims.
lin the accompanying drawings which for: a part oi? this specification, Figures 1., 2, and 3 are plan, side, and bottom elevations of a series of my novel units assernbled into a chain, F 4; an enlarged longritudinal central section of a portion of the chain, 5, 6, and 7, aplan view, an'end view, and av central sectional view of a unit before a stone is inserted, or the connections engaged, and Fig. 8, a side elevation of: a modified form oil my chain.
Lilro reference charac ers indicate like parts throughout the views.
ihe chain comprises a plurality of novel units A. adapted for interengagenient. Each unit consists of a substantially rectangular solid. bl oelr, provided, if desired, in its upper face with a central conical cavity a, and having" radial. ribs a extending to the cavity. The cavity is provided when a gem ll is to be employed as an ornament, in which case the ornament l? extends into the cavity a, and a suitable tool the material of the ribs (1 is pushed over the edge of the gem. to term retaining prongs as shown in Fig.
Each block A. is provided at its rear end near the bottom with lugs C connected at the upper portions of their outer ends with a bar 0, spaced :Fromthebody of the block, and above the "plane of the bottom of the body. The. bottom of the body or block A.
is cut away to form a rectangular recess d which extends to a transversely disposed channel 0 near the bottom of the forward end of the body. A flat reetzl ngular arm F, integral with the forward end of the body, is bendable, downwardly directed, and of such length that when bent inwardly and upwardly it registers in the recess (1. The thickness of the arm equals the depth of the recess, so that after the arm is seated the bottom surface of the unit is flushed with the outer surface of the arm.
in assembling the described units, each arm F is bent around an adjacent rod 6, and the latter is loosely enga god in the bend f of the arm, and in the channel 0 whereby the adjacent units are pivotally connected, and the bodies are in contiguity at their'lovver portions. it is important that the bodies be very close together to produce the best appearance, but it is also necessary that the units pivot relatively to each other and be (curable of assuinine such positions as shown in Fig. 4-. For this reason it is advantageous but not essential that the front and rear end faces of each unit body be inclined.
When an independent ornament is not employed the cavity may be omitted and the top taco oi the member A be ornamented in the flat or otherwise.
What 1 claim is l. A non-expansible chain comprising a plurality of units, each unit consisting: o fa body, lugs upon one end of the body, a bang.
connecting the lugs, said body being provided with a transverse channel near its opposits end adapted to receive the bar of an adlacent unit, and an arm upon the first unit adjacent the ob annelfi'lush with. the body embracing," said rod.
2. A non-exnansible chain comprising a plurality of units. each unit consisting of a body, lue's upon one end of the body, a bar integral with the lugs, said body being provided With a recess in its bottom face, a downwardly and rearwardly directed arm upon the other end of the body embracing the bar of the adjacent unit and having its free end seated in the recess till lllllll 3. A non-expansible plurality of units,
body, lugs connection 5 vided Wit chain comprising a each unit consisting of :1 upon one end of the body, a bar thexlugs, said body being proa recess in its bottom face and with a transverse channel above the recess adapted to loosely receive the bar of an ad- JOHN C. WAGHA.
