To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RUnoLr BRETTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the borough of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jewelry, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in jewelry and the object is to provide a bracelet, ring, necklace, or other article of jewelry composed of units of rectangular, round or other contour forming a base to which the ornamentation is secured, said units being so constructed that they may be flexibly connected without the use of solder, the structure being such that any jeweler may make up an article of jewelry from the units without the necessity of utilizing the services of a manufacturer.

Referring now more particularly to the drawing. Figs. 1 and 2, the numeral 1 designates the units of which as many are used as may be necessary to form the desired article of jewelry. Each unit has on one Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawing, the numeral 4 designates theunits, each of which has formed therein, on each side of its center, an opening 5. In this form of the invention, the units are connected by inserting through the coincident openings 5 of the adjacent units, a conmeeting-member 6 having a T-head and prongs 7, the projecting ends of which are bent back as shownr In Figs. 5, 6, 7 and 8, the numeral 8 designates the units, each of which has formed on each side of its center a T-shaped opening 9. The metal of the longer portion of the T-shaped opening is not cut entirely away from the metal of the unit but is bent outward as at 9 as shown. The units are held together by a connecting-member 10, having a T-head at each end. After inserting this number 10 in the T-shaped openings the metal 9 is bent inward to close the larger-portion of said openings, thus preventing the disengagement of the connect-- ing-member 10 from the units.

In the structure shown in Figs. 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13, I have designated the units by the numeral 11. Each unit has formed on each side of its center, a T-shaped opening 12, as in the form shown in Figs. 5 and 6, except. however, that all of the metal is cut out. Two connecting-members 13 are provided to connect each two units, these connecting members having T-heads at each end, and one having projecting beyond each end, a prong 14. \Vhen these two connecting members are inserted in the T-shaped openings of the adjacent units, the prongs l-l of one are bent down at the ends of the T-heads of the other, so that one member cannot be moved independently of the other to disengage the T-openings, and inasmuch as their combined thickness is greater than the width of the larger portion of theT- opening. it will be seen that disengagement is impossible.

From the above description it will be seen that I have provided a number of units which can be readily connected or disconneeted without the use of solder, and that anv article of jewelry may be formed therefrom by a jeweler without the use of tools other than pliers. It willv be understood that the units may be made of any kind of metal and may be ornamented with any kind of ornamentation of metal and precious stones.

It will be noted that in all of the forms shown the units are held 'in substantially close relation with each other and the connecting element is not visible and does not constitute a Visiblelink of the complete article. g

Having thus fully described my invention What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the'United States, is:

1. An article of jewelry composed of units each consisting of a single integral element and having openings formed upon opposite sides of its center, said units being placed with adjacent sides in contact with each other, and aeonnecting member adapted to be inserted through the opening of one unit and to engage the inner wall thereof and to hold said un ts in close relatlon, said connecting memberbeing substantially concealed by said units.
