CAI-IAIN. I i i Application filed June 1,
' This invention relatesto an improved constrnctlon of ornamental chain; and has for its object to provide'achain of this character having a gem-setting link about which an ornamental ring'is mounted, which ring is nector link havingone en d fixed to the setting and its 'free' end'bent to embrace and lock the ornament in position'thereon;
\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, as will be more fully'd-escribed, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In'the' accompanying drawings-'- 7 j Figure 1 is a top view showing my improved typeof ring. v
Figure 2 is a side elevation ofthe boxshaped gem-setting link with oneend of the connector link attached thereto;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of one of the bendable connector links. V
' Figure 4 shows'one'form of ringshaped ornament which is adapted to be held in position about the gem-setting link.
Figure 5 is a top view of the gem-setting link with the ornament removed.
Figure 6 is a side elevation showing the ring ornament in position on the setting link retained by the bendable connector links.
Figure 7 is the same as Figure 6 and showing the ring ornament and the next adjacent links in section.
Figure 8 is a top view of the assembly shown in Figure 7, partly in section.
Figure 9 is a perspective view of the assembly shown in Figures 6 and 7.
Figure 10 is a side elevation partly in section showing another form of ring ornament and bendable connector link having a contracted middle portion to serve as a hearing for the ring Figure 11 is a top view of the construction shown in Figure 10.
It is found in practice in the construction of ornamental chains of this character, of advantage, I in many instances to employ ornamental members and connect them to the gem-setting link, which ornamental members may be constructed of celluloid or other material, the finish of which may be aifected by soldering heat upon it, and in order to apply these ornaments to the setting link after the connecting parts have 1926. Serial No. 112,883.
been soldered or. "otherwise attached to gether and finished I employ abendable connecting link which may serve a doublepurpose, first to' secure the ornamental ring or member to the gem-setting link and sec 0nd, to connect this' linktothe next adjacent link or links of the chain; and the following is a detailed description of the present embodiment of my invention a-nd showing one means by which these advantageous results 1nay be:accomplished:'
VVith' reference to the drawings, 10 designates the gem-setting link which may be'oi' the usual box-setting type having a peripheral band with side walls, in the upper edge of which is set the gem 11 by pressing inwardly the edge'1'2 of the band about it.
In order to render the setting more at tractive, I attach an ornamental-member l3 thereto, which in some cases, I form of cellu loid and m ring shape, the celluloid being of different-colors, and in some cases this ornament is formedof metal and positioned about the gem setting.
In order to secure this ornamental ring in POSltlOl'l to the setting without being obhged to apply soldering heat thereto after the ring is positioned, I have provided apair of benable connecting links 14 which re soldered to the walls of the setting before the ornamental ring is positioned. This bendable link is also designed to connect the setting link 10 to the nextadjacent links 15 of the chain. To accomplish this in a simple and effective way, I have soldered one end 16 of thisbendable link to the side wall of the setting link after which I place the ring-shaped ornament 13 in position about the setting link and then pass the free end 17 of the setting links through the next adjacent links ofthe chain and finally fold this i free end into closed position, as best illustrated in Figure 7 j It will be observed that-in this case in order to obtain the desired result I form the setting member, I. have provided. spacer V blocks 18 on! opposite sides of this setting link which serve to centralize the ring orna any employ) a bendable linki having its middle portions? 22 set inwardly toward each other. I This inwardly extending" portion forming a rest as at 23' for? the suppert of thisring '50 as zt'o permit the I'iI'IgT'tOEbG mounted". loosely abent the setting member and be loosely supported in the bendable links 21.
