Tlie invention relates to store front constiuctioiis. It has for its primary objects the provision of an improved construction which permits the setting of the glass with a: minimum labor' cost; which is of simple construction and relatively low cost; in which a maximum clearancel is afforded between the edge ot the glass and the metal fixtures surrounding it, so that breakage due to settling and consequent engagement ot the edge ot the glass withv any rigid metal members tending to break the sheet is reduced; and in which the glass can be set entirely fromy the front while at thefsame time avoiding a showing from the front of screws or other holding devices for the metal cap plate tendingto mar the appearance of the construction. The front strip 8` has its upper edge bentV or hooked over .forming the securing lugs 14 (Fig. 2)-, which are adapted to` be engagedby the clamps 7.- The outer edge ot the base strip 4 is bent up as indicated at 15 to provide aholding recess, and the lower edge of the outer strip is bent back as indicated at 16 to engage in such recess. v
In assembling the device the sheet ofv glass is positioned with its edges resting upon a f pair of wood or fibrel blocks, not shown. The
clamps 7 are then mounted on the brackets 5 and pushed up tightly against the glass, after which the screws 13 are screwed down to lock the clamps in position. The front or cover strip 8 is now applied by hooking its lower edge beneath the edge 0f the base strip as indicated in Fig. 3, with its upper edge bearing against the glass and with the lugs 14 to one 'side of the clamps 7. The strip 8-is then slid longitudinally until the lugs or holding devices 14come behind the clamps. This, of course, leaves a space at one or both ends of the front strip 8, but such spaces are relatively short and are covered by the corner caps ordinarily used in this general type of construction, such corner caps being. fastened in position by the usual screws.

In this arrangement what is known as a "kalomine construction is employed behine the glass, such construction involving the strip 19, another metal'strip 23 and a wood filler 23a, the lead bearing strips being omitted in this construction and drainage being permitted either by lack of complete contact'between the strip 19 and the glass or by grooving the strip at intervals, these being well known expedients in the art and constituting no part of the present invention. The base strip 21 is provided at intervals with punched up dovetail lugs 24 to which are securely attached bracket members 25, Leach provided' with two wedge portions 26, as indicated in Fig. 5. The upper edge of the front strip `22 is bent around as shown at 27, to forni a. holding recess, and spaced at intervals in this recess are locking loops 28 (Fig. 6), such'loops being clamped in the recess 27 so that they will move with the front strip. The lower edge of the front strip 22 is preferably hooked round the outer edge of the base strip 21, as .indicated at 29.
Inv assembling this construction, the glass 2O is placed upon wood blocks as in the other form of construction and the front strip is hooked over the outer edge of the base strip with thev locking loops 28 in alignment with the' bracketsV 25. The front strip is now moved longitudinally so that the loops pass over the ends of the wedge portions 26. As this movement continues vthe wedge action pulls the loops 28 downward, thus moving the upper edge of the front strip into contact with the glass, the tightness of such contact depending upon the extent to which the front strip is moved. The friction involved in such movement, however, is such" that it renders it impossibleto apply such a pressure upon the glass as would tend to break it. It will beseen that this sash bar mayV be applied even morequickly than the Y 5 one of the construction of Figs. 1 to 4. Also hookedportion 33 at its outer edge. The.
