Be it known that we, CHARLES B. YOUNG and CHARLES J. CAsrAR, citizens of the United States, and residents of Pittsburgh in the county of Allegheny and State o Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in a Store-Front Construction, of which the followin is a specifica-tion.
The invention re ates to store front constructions. It has for its principal object the provision of an improved construction which permits of the setting of the lglass from the-front in such manner, that there is no danger of breaking the glass and wlth a minimum amount of elfort on the part of the workmen. It has for its further object the provision of an improved cover plate construction in which the number of holding screws is reduced to a minimum andk which is held very securely, but which atv the same time, presents none of the difficulties as to removal after a long period of time, such as are present with certain of the so-called screwless types of cover plates. One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings where- Figure 1 is a front view of the assembled construction with portions of the glass and cover strip broken away to more clearly disclose the construction. Fig. 21s a perspective view showing the construction of one of the clamps with the glass and cover strip removed. And F ig. 3 is a section on the line III-III of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the members 1 and 2 are arts of the window framing in which the glass plate 3 is seated, the part 1 constituting an inwardly rejecting ledge in opposition to the rear ace of the glass and the part 2 constituting a laterally extending ledge in opposition to the edge of the glass sheet. The glass sheet is supported by means of the usual wood blocks (not shown), the pressure of the holding devices as later described not being suicient to sup# port the weight of the glass. The two ledges 1 and 2 are protected by means of metal sheatliin of the angular cross section indicated infig. 3, the upright portion 4 being referred to as the back strip. and the lateral portion 5 being referred to as thebase strip as these parts might be separate'members and the part 4 mi ht be dispensed with, although the preferre and usual arrangement is to employ the construction just as illustrated so as to ive a maximum amount of protection to t e wood members 1 and 2.
At its outer edge, the 'bottom strip 5 is provided with a flange 6 spaced away from the ledge 2 to provide a recess for the edge of the cover strip as later described. Spaced at intervals along the base strip are the angular brackets or clips 7, each having a flange 8 in opposition to the back strip and a flange 9,'the .outer ortion of which is'oifset, as indicated in igs. 2 and 3 to provide a space for the lower ends of the screws 10, the extreme outer edges of the flanges 9 being supported upon the flanges 6 of the base strip 5. The clamp is preferably provided with a slotted portion 15 lying in the flange 14 and a slotted portion 16 lying in the flange 13, the 'slot 16 being wide enough to permit the head'of the holdinfr screw 10 to slide therethrough, thus provi ing in effect a bayonet joint, permitting application and removal of the clamp without removing the screw 10. The opposing faces of the flanges may be, and preferably are, roughened, so that when the screw 10 is tightened, there is less danger of the clamp slipping. .As heretofore referred to, 'the spacing of the flange 9 away from the cover strip 5 provides room for the lower end of the screw 10 so that vit may be tightened without coming into contact with the base strip.
The upper edge of the clamping ilange 13 is turned back upon itself as indicated at 16 and provided with a threaded perforation 17. The cover strip 18, preferably of sheet copper, is formed at one edge with the flange 19 adapted to fit beneath the flange 6, and at its other edge, is turned laterally pat 20 so as to fit over the clamps and entirely and pressed up against t cover them. The cover strip is secured in position at its upper edge by means of the screws 21.
In setting the glass 3, it is first placed in position in the sheathing 4, 5 supported at suitable intervals by small wood blocks. The clamps 12 are then put into position e glass and the screws 10 tightened. This procedure prevents any undue pressure belng a plie to the glass by the c amps 12, since t e application of the screws 10 does not tighten the clamps. There is, therefore, no danger of breaking the glass from this cause, such as sometimes occurs with a clamp arranged so that tightening of the screw holdingI it forces the clamp against the glass. The
cover strip is then applied by hooking its iiange 19 beneath the flan 16 and applying its up er edge over t e clamps as indicated in ig. 3, after which the screws 21 are put in place. The labor of applying the cover strip is thus relatively shght, as screws need to be apsplied only at one edge. The cover strip is a easily removed after a long period of service, since there is no diiiiculty in removing the screws 21, after which the upper edge of the cover strip can be sprung back permitting a grip upon the strip either by the hands of the operator or by a tool such that the ange 19 may be loosened without diiiiculty, even though it has tightened in position due to corrosion or other causes incident to the passage of time. The glazing of the window can be accomplished by one man working from the outside, as no cooperationis required from the inside of the glass as is the case in many forms of setting. Other advantages incident to the cheapness and sim licity of the construction and the ease wit whlch it ma be applied and removed from position an its extreme safet will be readily apparent to those skilled 1n the art.
What we claim is:
1. In a store front construction, including a window' framing and a glass sheet mounted therein, a metal base strip secured to the framing and having its outer edge spaced away from the framing to, provide a holding iiange, holding brackets mounted at spaced intervals along the base strip and secured rigidly in position, clam ing brackets mounted upon the holding brac ets and each comprising an inwardly extending clamping ilange in opposition to the face of the glass plate and a laterall extending iange engaging one of said olding brackets, screw means extending through said laterally extending ilanges and into the holding brackets for securing the clamping brackets in position, a cover strip having an inwardl turned iiange at one ed fitting beneat said flange on the base strip and at its other edge overlapping and covering the clamping flanges ofl theclamping and.

3. In combination, a store front construction including a window framin having an inwardly extendin ledge and a aterally extending led e and a glass seated in the framing wit its rear face in opposition to said inwardly extending ledge and its edge in opposition to said laterally extending ledge, a metal base strip seated upon sai laterally extending ledge and having its outer edge spaced away from the ledge to provide a holdin ilange, angle brackets seated at spaced intervals along the base strip each having one flange thereof in opposition to said inwardly extending led and the other flange in opposition to t e base strip, screw means extending through the first mentioned flange of the bracket for clamping the bracket in lixed position relative to said ledges, an vangle clamp mounted upon each bracket with one ilange in opposition to the front face of the glass, screw means for securing the clamps to the brackets, a cover strip having an inwardl turned flange at one edge fitting benea said ilange on the base strip and at its other edge overlapping the clamping anges of the angle clamps, and screw means extending through said other edge of the cover str1 and into said clamping flanges of the ang e clamps.
4. In combination, a store front construction including a window framing having an inwardly extending ledge and a laterally extending ledge and a glass seated in the framing with its rear face in opposition to said inwardly extending ledge and its edge in opposition to said laterally extending ledge, a metal base strip seated upon said laterally extending ledge and having its outer edge spaced away from the ledge to provide a holding fiange, angle brackets seated at spaced intervals along the base strip each having one flange thereof in opposition t0 said inwardly extending ledge and the other flange in opposition to the base strip, screw means extending through the first mentioned flange of the bracket for clamping the bracket in fixed position relative to said led an angle clamp mounted upon each brac et with one fiange in opp sition thereto and the other comprising a clamping flange in opposition tothe front face of the glass, screw'and slot connections between the clamps and the brackets to permit the adjustment of the clamps toward and from the glass, a cover strip having an inwardly turned flange at one edge fitting beneath said flange on the base strip and at its other edge overlapping the clamping flanges ofthe angle clamps, and screw means extending through said other edge of the cover strip and into said clamping langesof the angle clamps.
5. In combination, a store front construction, including a window framing having an inwardl extending ledge and a laterally extending ledge and a glass seated in the framing with its rear face in opposition to said inwardly extending ledge and its edge in opposition to said Alaterally extending ledge, a metal base strip Seated upon said laterally extending led e and having its outer edge spaced away rom the ledge to provide a holding fian e, angle clamps mounted at spaced interva along the base strip, each having one flange in opposition to the base and the other comprising a clamping fla e in opposition to the front face of the g ass, screw means extending through the first mentioned flange of the clamp for securing the clamp inifixed position with relation to the base strip, a cover strip having an inwardly turned flange at ally extending ledge and a glass seated in the framing with its rear face in opposition to said inwardly extending ledge and its edge vin opposition to said laterally extending ledge, anchoring means seated in iixed position upon said laterally extending ledgel and having flan e holding means spaced away from the l ge, angle clamps mounted at spaced intervals along the laterally extending ledge, each having one flan e in opposition to the laterally extending edge and the other comprising a clamping flange in opposition to the front face of the glass,
