SHAPED ELEMENT OF PLASTIC MATERIAL FOR COMPCS ITE DOOR FRAMES Filed Aug. 30, 1965 INVENTOR Albert Nhlig of a wall which defines a door United States Patent Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A door jamb assembly for installation over the end opening having a pair of elongated substantially L-shaped members having flexible tongue portions receiving cover plates on the sides and end of the wall.
This invention relates to a shaped element of synthetic or plastic material for door frames consisting of cover plates and shaped strips or boards overlying the cover plates at the edges. Door frames of this general type are being employed in which the shaped strips for the outer edges on the back and front sides of the Wall are loose and must be fitted over suitably formed support elements which are previously secured to the wall, after the cover plates have been slipped into longitudinal grooves of rigidly connected shaped strips.
It is an object of the invention to reduce the number of loose, shaped strips for composite door frames in order to thus shorten the time required for attaching a door frame. According to the invention an angle member of synthetic material which can fit over the corner of the door opening is previously secured in place and this angle member has in the area of its face part a longitudinal groove for receiving a lateral cover plate and a longitudinal groove at the end of the leg extending parallel to the plate and formed of an elastic outwardly curved tongue which yields laterally when the cover plate, which has been slipped into the first mentioned longitudinal groove, is pressed down and moves back over the plate when the latter is in position against the leg of the shaped synthetic member.
Instead of mounting the outer shaped cover strips of a door frame last they are now produced together with the profiled or shaped element for the door stop surfaces or together with the shaped corner strip of the front cover side in an injection moulding process. The legs of the angle members extending under the front or back cover plates can now also be nailed directly to the Wall because the interval from the wall allowing the attachment of a connection strip to secure the grooved, loose cover strips is no longer necessary.
Other objects and features of the invention will become apparent upon reading the following detailed description of an embodiment of the invention given by way of example and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the single figure shows a plan view in cross section of a shaped door frame structure according to the invention.
With reference to the drawing the wall 1 has only one backing board 2 on the face surface inside the door opening. A shaped member 3 of synthetic material holds the cover plates on the backside and another shaped member 4 of synthetic material holds the cover plates on the front side of the wall. Both shaped members 3 and 4 have the form of a right angle member and are fixed with one leg to the backing board 2 at the face surface inside the door opening and with the other leg directly to the wall.
. The shaped member 3 is provided in -a known manner with a stop surface 3a for arresting the door. 0n the leg portion at the back side it has a tongue 3b formed to define a longitudinal groove for inserting the rear cover plates 5. At the end of this leg which extends parallel to plate 5 a complementary groove is formed by a curved, elastic tongue 30. This tongue permits a standardization of shaped parts that are attachable and required in this area, as plate 5 may be put into position by inserting it into the longitudinal groove of tongue 3b and by pressing down on the plate. By exerting pressure on the plate the tongue 30 yields laterally so as to allow the plate 5 to pass by and thereafter tongue 3c moves back to place itself over the top of the plate edge as shown in the drawing.
In a similar manner the front cover plate 6 is first inserted into a longitudinal groove of a tongue 40 of a shaped corner element 4a and is set in position by pressing it toward the front wall. The tongue 4d at the end of the leg yields and moves over the top edge of the plate. The liner plate 7 is slipped in a known manner into the groove formed by the stop tongue 3a before the shaped members are secured, and is slid during the mounting of the shaped member 3 into a groove of the tongue 4b of corner element 4a and the member 3 is then secured to the wall.
As uneven portions of the wall surface 1 could result in improper alignment of the shaped members placed directly against the wall on opposite sides, the invention provides integral groove-forming extensions at the ends of the side legs of the shaped side members and open toward the wall. A closure strip 8 is inserted in the groove formed by the integral tongues 3d and 4d respectively. This closure strip 8 bears against the wall surface and allows to make the necessary adjustment of the shape members 3 and 4 for uneven wall surfaces whereby the door frame presents a clean end portion without any gaps at the wall surface.
What is claimed is:
1. A door jamb assembly for installation over the end of a wall defining a door opening comprising-in combination:
(a) a pair of elongated substantially L-shaped members each having a side leg overlying a side wall of the opening and an end leg overlying the end wall of the opening,

(c) a second longitudinally extending flange located 'at the intersection of the said side and end legs each terminating in a second tongue portion extending toward said first tongue portion and defining therewith spaced grooves for receiving side cover plates,
(d) side cover plates inserted under each of the second flange portions and snapped behind the first arcuate flange portions,
(e) a third longitudinally extending flange portion located on one of said end legs and terminating in a third tongue portion,
(f) the other of said end legs having a fourth tongue portion extending toward said third tongue portion said third and fourth tongue portions thereby defining spaced grooves for receiving an end cover plate,
(g) an end cover plate inserted in said fourth tongue portion and located behind said third tongue portion,
(h) said fourth tongue portion and one of said second tongue portions extending from the same longitudinally extending flange located at the intersection of one of said side and end legs.
V 2. A door jamb as defined in claim 1 wherein said L- shaped members are of plastic material.
3. A door jam-b as defined in claim 1 wherein said third flange portion is positioned inwardly of said intersection.
4. A door jamb as defined in claim 1 wherein said third tongue portions extends toward its associated end leg.
5. A pair of shaped members according to claim 1 including an extension at the end of each side leg and defining a groove open toward the wall for receiving a closure strip to cover the end of the side leg.
