'Ehis invention.. relates to an4 improved. spiritv'leaiel', having` more particular reference to a novel mounting for: the. liquid, con.-

The inventionchas ence to. a. level?. structure. wherein.
a pair of spirit containing vials are utilized, these be\ ing-disposed in side by-vsiclerelation for se curing a more accurate result from the use of theinstrument. a e
My principal aim is to provide a novel means whereby the vial can be disposed in side by side spaced parallel re'ation, but
. can be adjusted with respect to each other to insure true parallelism, and simultaneous action of the indicating bubbles.
"Other features and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following drawings and description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application, and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the samez- Figure 1 is a of a body portion of a level showing the improved device associated therewith.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through Fig. 1, showing the construction and arrangement of details more plainly.
,'Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the device.
Fig, 4 is a` view with parts in elevation showing the device inverted.
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the vial holding brackets.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the reference character 1 designates the body portion of the level which is of usual rectangular form and which in the present instance is formed with a substantially ovate opening extending therethrough, and counterbored on its top and bottom. Fitted into the top ovate frame 2 and fittedV into the bottom counter-bore is a frame 3 of substantially the same outline. yThe frame in each instance is provided with an overhanging lip 4 disposed in spaced relation to an inwardly extending liange 5, thus forming a channel between the lip and flange. The flange also forms a ledge upon which a transparent closure 6 rests, the closure in place by putty or other suitable retaining.
material 7 It will be noted particularly from Figs.
more .particular refeny top plan view of a fragmentl fragmentary detail sectional or counter bore is a substantially being maintained attaching tongue 13.
theupper. france2' .8 which... This. rim."4
2 and3'tliat-the flange off is provided-,with a` dependingvriin is also ovate in general outline.
rests Inpon; the flange 5. of the; lower. frame 3 6d as shown: plainly inV Fig.. 3.. -At. oppositev ends, the rim is formed with spaced openings 9 through. which. thc` ends of apair offl'iquid containing vials 410 extend. x Tlresevials are ofv .usualform. and containthe customary 65 liquidandgindicating. bubbles; l
In order to hold the vials in spaced-relation, I provide, as before indicated, a pair of retaining brackets 11 of the form plainly shown in Fi'g. 5. Each bracket as rhere in- 70 dicated comprises a split band 12 and an The tongue is formed with an aperture and an appropriate screw or other fastening extends therethrough .and into the flange 5 of the top frame 2.
It is obvious that with this arrangement the brackets can be adjusted with respect to each other to change the relationshipv of the twov vials. It follows, also, that by beingr able to vary the relative relation in this 8O manner, the two vials can lbe disposed in strict parallelism. v
In installing the device in the body 1, an ovate hole is drilled through the same and it is counterbored on top and bottom for a depth to accommodate the thickness of the frames as indicated in Fig. 2. Around the margin or preferably atthe opposite ends holes are drilled to accommodate internally screwv threaded sleeves 14 and fastening 90 screws 15 are passed through the framesand threaded into the sleeve. Also, if desired, packing rings 16 may be used'to insure'a good joint. i
Referring to F ig.k 4, it will be seen that. the device is shown in an inverted position, the frame 3 at the top and the frame 2 at the bottom. Inasmuch as the frame 2 is placed in -position first, it is desired to firmf ly fasten this in place. This is accomplished by using a washer 16 and fitting the same in an appropriately drilled recess and Jthen passing the fastening screw'17 therevials are niounted thereon and the brackets 1 1 are properly adjusted. This frame is thus irrnly fastened in place and the other :traine is put in position to complete the device. A'
It is believed that by considering the decription in connection with the accompanying drawings, persons i'arniliar with devices of this class will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the same. Therefore, a more lengthy description is thought unnecessary.
Minor changes coining within the iield of invention claimed may be resorted to if desired.
Having thus described n y what I claiin as new is Y In a level of the class described, a body having an opening extending therethrough,

rr` aining ineans for said covers, a rini'oar- 'tried by one of said frames, said rim beingl provided at its ends with openings, a pail' oi liquid containing vials having their end portions extending through said openings,
and retaining brackets extending through said openings and connectedwith` said vials .iosiirii AKT.
