Description

Nrrnn STATES PATENT CHARLESA. FUGHSLOGHER AND FRANK A. SCHMID, OF ERIE, PA.'
Y IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-EscAPEs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,571, dated February 9, 1876; application led September 14, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES A. FUCHS- LOGHER and FRANK A. SOHMID, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Fire-Escape, of which the following is a specification My invention relates to that class of fireescapes which aremounted on wheels, and thus can be transported from place to place.
The nature of our invention consists in such a combination of screws and levers, a platform and supplemental platform, and transporting trucks, as to form a portable device for rescuing persons or property from the upper stories of burning buildings.
Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing` by one figure, which is a perspective view, and shows the platform partially elevated.
rIlle letters of refereneeindicate the various parts, as follows:
B is the wagoutruck, which supports and transports our device. which is elevated or depressed by the accompanying mechanism. A is a supplemental platform, which can be thrown out to act as a bridge i'rom the platform to the building. I I I, Src., are the elevating-levers, and D E F are the actuating-screws. Other letters indicate other parts which will appear in the further description.
The following is a more perfect description of our invention, to enable those of proper skill to construct the same. The truck-frame B is constructed of such material and of sufficient strength to enable it to sustain the superstructure. Passing from side to side at or near the middle is a horizontal screw-shaft, F, which is operated by the Wheels G G. The screw-shaft F turns the screw-wheel E, which operate the screw-shafts D D, which lie length- A is the platform,
wise of the truck. These operate in nuts in the cross-bars C C, and as the said crosspieces move in guide-slots in the side pieces of the truck-frame B they are drawn together or repelled by the operation of the screw-shafts D D. To these cross-bars are attached the ends of the elevating-levers I I I, and hence, when the cross-bars are drawn together by the action of the screw-shafts D D, the plat form is elevated. The height to which the platform can be elevated of course depends on the length and number of the levers I I I. Connected with the platform is a supplemental platform, A', which is thrown out from the main platform by another system of levers,
dit', which are operated in any convenient;y
manner. The main platform may be pivoted so as to turn easily to any point.
The operation of our device is simple. The
truck is drawn to the side of the burning" building, and the platform is at once elevated to the position desired, and the supplemental platform is thrown out to the window at which entrance is desired. To enable persons to reach the ground at any time from the elevated platform, a rope-ladder is used.
What we claim as our invention is as followsl. In combination with the platform A, the supplemental platform A and levers i 'i i, as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the truck B, elevating-levers I, platform A, supplemental platform A', and levers i t' i, as shown, and for the purposes mentioned.
CHARLES A. FUCHSLOGHER.
FRANK A. SGHMID.
