The prescntinventiou has relation to elevators designed to lower barrels or other heavy articles into cellars, or elevate said articles from cellars or into the upper stories of buildings, and its nature consists in the different parts and combina-tion of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out inthe claims.

In th e accolnpan ying drawings, A. represents the track, which is composed of two parallel pieces of wood or iron, which constitute the track proper, said parallel pieces being held at the desired distance apart by suitable cross pieces or ties, as seen in Fig. 1, said crosspieces being attached to the rails of the track in any desired and well-known manner. To the top or upper end of the track A is attached the hinged or jointed extension B, which is of the same width as the track A, and is constructed substantially in the saine manner, and is designed to lie on the ground or pavement contiguous to the hatchway of a cellar.
To the hinged or jointed extension Bis attached the extension C, said extension being substantially of the forni shown in the drawg ings. To the upper ends of the track A are attached the ratchet-arms D, similar arms being attached to the ends of the extension B, as seen in Fig. l, these arms being for the purpose of forming a hinge or joint by means of the rod E, said rod being provided uponfone end with the head a, as seen in Fig. 2. The opposite end of the rod E is provided with a screw-thread, which receives the lever b. On the rod E is located the hollow pipe F, which is for the purpose of pressing against the arms D when the lever b is turned against the arms D, thus forming a rigid connection at any desired angle by means of the ratchet-arms D.
The joint or hinge arms G are attached to the extensions B and C, substantially as shown in the drawings, and are substantially of the form shown in Fig. 4. These arms G are provided with the shoulders d, which are for the purpose of preventing the extension C from coming too far forward while raising or 1owering a barrel or other article, and at the same time permitting said extension to drop, as seen in Fig. 6.
The truck or carriage H is substantially of' the form shown in the drawings, and is provided with the wheels H', which may be of the form shown in the drawings, or may be of any other desired form, said wheels being provided with suitable flanges to hold the truck on the track. l
The truck or carriage His provided with the pins l1., (best seen in Fig. 1,) and are for the purpose of attaching the handle and skid I to the truck, as seen in Fig. 7. Bars may be used in place of the pins h, if desired. The handle and skid I issubstantially of the form shown in Fig. 5, and is provided with the recessed ends J, to engage the pins h, thus forming either a handle or skid to the truck H, so that the truck may be moved about a cellar or other place when said truck is detached from the track, and at the saine time can be used as a skid, as seen in Fig. 7. To the free end of the extension Gis attached the windlass K, which may be of the form shown in Fig. 1. To the windlassK is rigidly attached the ratchet- IOO e laila wheel K, which engages the dog K2 in the oridinary manner. To the extension C is attached the brake-lever L, which is for the purpose of retarding the motion as articles are being lowered, and is operated in the ordi nary manner. rIhe rope or cord M is attached to the rear axle of the truck or carriage H, and passes over the forward axle yof said truck or carriage, so as to prevent the truck from tipping backward as it is being elevated or lowered. rIhe opposite end ofthe rope or cord M is attached to the windlass K, as seen in Fig. l. On the hollow pipe F is loosely at# tached the spool N, so that the rope or cord M will easily pass said pipe F.
In order to dump a barrel at the bottom a stick is placed a short distance from the lower end of the track A, as seen in Fig. 8, so that as the truck H descends the rear wheels will strike the stick and throw the truck in the position shown in said Fig. 8.
When it is desired to load heavy articles into a wagon, the `joint or hinge at w is made rigid, and the extension C placed in the posi-` tion shown in Fig. 6, and the forward end of the extension placed on the wagon, when the rope or cord O is attached to the windlass` O and passes over the spool O2, as seen in Fig. l, and attached to the rear axle of the truck or carriage H,and the crank P attached to the windlass O. The crank l? is provided with the springcatch P', so that said crank can be easily detached from one windlass and easily attached to the other.
In case it is desired to use a horizontal eX- tension at the bottom or lower end of the track A it may be attached, as at x, as seen in Fig.

with the main track-section A for a Wheeled truck, of a secondary track-section, B, hinged to one end of the main track-sections, an extension track-section, C, hinged to one end of the secondary tracklsections, a windingdrum or windlass mounted in the upper end of the Y,
extension tracksection, and a cable for connecting the'drurn with awheeledtruck adapted to travel on the main and secondary tracksections, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the main track-section A for a wheeled truck, the secondary track-section B, hinged to one end ofthe main track-sections, an extension tracksection, C, hinged to the secondary track-sections, spools N and O2 at the ends of the secondary tracksection, a windlass, O', mounted in the main track-section, and a cable, O, substantially as described.
3. The hollow pipe F, located on the rodE, in combination with the ratchet-arms D and the track A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The joint or hinge arms G, provided with the shoulders d, in combination with the extensions B and C, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. The Ahandle and skid I, provided with the recessed ends J, in combination with the truck or carriage H, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
6. The extension C, provided with the windlass K, said windlass being provided with the ratchet-wheel K', which engages the dog K2, substantially as and for the purpose speciied.
7. The ratchet-arms D, located on the track A, and the extension B, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
8. The crank I), provided with the springcatch P', in combination with the windlasses K and O', substantially as and for the purpose specified.
9. The windlasses K and O', having attached thereto the ropes or cords M and 0, in combination with the truck or carriage H, substantially as shown and described.
10. The truck or carriage H, provided with the flanged wheels H", and having the elevating rope or cord attached to the `rear axle of said truck or carriage, and said elevating rope or cord passing over the forward axle, substantially as and for the purpose specied. Y
