MOVING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Application filed March 27, 1907. Serial No. 364,812.
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE FLEIscH- MANN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at McKees Rocks, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Moving Devices, of which the 'ollowing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to moving devices, and the invention has for its primary object to provide a novel device particularly adapted for moving pianos and large pieces of heavy furniture.
Another object of this invention is to combine an ordinary skid and piano mover, the skid being detachably connected whereby it can be used for purposes common to the ordinary skid.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device that can be easily handled in comparatively small places, the safety of a piano or piece of furniture placed upon the device being assured on account of the novel manner in which the piece of furniture is cushioned, and retained upon the device.
With the above and other objects in view, which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing forming part of this specification, like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of myimproved moving device illustrating a piano located thereon, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the moving device, Fig. 3 is a similar view of a portion of the device, Fig. i is an elevation of a pin used in connection with the device, Fig. 5 is a similar view of the moving device, illustrating the manner of moving it down or up steps, Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view of the moving device.
My improved moving device consists of a platform 1 which is constructed of a head block 2, boards 3 and 4, and spacers 5. The board 4 is provided with rollers 6, whereby the platform can be easily moved. Strapped as at 7, to the board 3 is a cushion or mat 8. The cushion or mat serves to protect a piano or furniture placed. upon the movable platform 1 and can be used upon the drivers seat of a vehicle. The head block 2 is provided with pierced lugs 9 and openings 10, and adapted to fit in said openings are dowel pins 11 carried by a skid 12. The skid 12 is constructed of boards 14 spaced apart by spacers 15. One end of the skid is provided with recesses 16 and with transverse openings 17, a pin 18 being mounted in said openings to pass through the recesses 16 and the pierced lugs 9 mounted therein. In connecting the skid to the platform 1 in the manner just described, the skid will be maintained at right angles to the platform, whereby a piece of furniture can be braced upon two sides. One end of the skid is provided with rollers 19 whereby the skid or moving device can be easily handled.
In connection with my improved moving device, I use straps 20, for securing furniture or similar articles upon the moving device.
In order that the usefulness of the device will be understood, I will cite as an example the operation of moving a piano. A skid 12 is detached from the platform 1 and it is placed under a piano, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The platform is then secured to the skid, the moving device covering the bottom and the end of a piano. The piano is then strapped or otherwise secured to the moving device, suitable cloths being used to protect the piano where it contacts with the moving device or straps. The device is then raised until the platform 1 rests uppn the floor, as illustrated in Fig. 2. Here is where the rollers 19 assist in placing the platform 1 upon the floor, the outer end of the skid being gripped and raised. The piano can then be moved to any desired point and assuming that it is to be taken down a stairway as illustrated in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the skid 12 comes into use again and slides over the stairs, the moving device either being held by workmen or by a block and tackle arranged upon the stairway.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised a novel moving device adapted to relieve workmen of the strenuous operation of moving heavy and cumbersome articles. The device is preferably constructed of strong and durable wood having certain parts made of metal.
WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A moving device consisting of a platform formed of a head block and spaced boards, said head block being provided With longitudinal openings and projecting pierced lugs, rollers attached to said platform, a cushion carried by said platform, a skid having angularly extending dowel pins at one end thereof adapted to enter the openings in said head block and recesses in said end com municating With a transverse opening and adapted to receive said lugs carried by the head block, a pin fitting said transverse opening and engaging said pierced lugs to detachably connectthe skid to said platform at right angles thereto, said skid being formed of spaced boards and rollers journaled in one end of said skid.
2. A moving device consisting of a mov able platform, a cushion attached thereto, and a skid detachably connected to said platform by dowel pins and by pierced lugs engaged in suitable recesses by a binding pin and rollers journaled in one end of said skid.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
GEORGE FLEISCHMANN.
