ROAD-CART.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 475,273, dated May 1'7, 1892. Application filed December 1'7, 1891. Serial No. 415,422. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JAMES FARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roxbury, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road-Carts and other Two-Wheeled Vehicles; and I do herebydeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to dog-carts and other two-wheeled vehicles in which the seat will press the spring down some two inches more when two persons are in it than when only one is there, the seat being thereby rendered too low for convenience and a proper appearance.

The object of my invention is to make the seat adjustable in height to suit the weight which is to be placed on it.

Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation which shows one of the ordinary seat supports or braces resting on the side spring in the usual way; Fig. 2, a detail view of the seat-support; Fig. 3, a similar view of the upper section; Fig. 4, a detail view of the lower section; Fig. 5, a detail view of the socket with its spring-detent.

In the drawings, A represents the ordinary side spring of a dog-cart, on which is sustained the side brace or support B of the seat. The latter consists, usually, of the upper and lower parallel bars I) b and the two diagonal bars b 12 as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Instead of the old diagonal bars 1) I1 I use the two socket-ears c c, a spring (1 under one end, and a pin d under the other end. The upper horizontal bar bis provided under each end with a preferably round stud E, having the lateral holes 6 at different elevation. By putting the pin d in one or another of the holes 6 through the socket-hole c the seat may be placed at the desired or proper height for any weight which is to be placed upon it. This operation is easily performed and may be done in a very few moments, which is found in practice to be a great convenience. This is also convenient to make the seat correspond properly to the height of the horse.

Having thus described all that is necessary to a full understandingot' my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to protect by Letters Patent, is-

The brace or side support of a dog-cart, consisting of the two sections 1) b, the formerhaving under each end a stud with several side holes and the latter provided with the sockets C C, with spring-'detents, all substantially as shown and described.
