UNITED lSTATES J. ALDEE ELLIS, OE
CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT lN IRN TIPS FOR VEHICLE-POLES.
S pacification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,503, dated February 9, 1875; application filed December 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. ALDER ELLIS, of Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented an Iron Tip for the Poles of Vehicles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, which form a part thereof.
rIhe nature of my invention consists in making an iron for the Small end or tip of vehiclepoles, which can be cheaply made and readily Iapplied, so as to be eiI'ect-ive in protecting the end of the pole, and serve all the ordinary purposes of irons that have been used in various Ways upon the ends ot' poles Ot vehicles.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved iron detached from the pole. Fig. 2 represents a Section taken at the line x x in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 represents a piece of the end of the pole with the iron applied.
A represents a center-web, and B represents flanges upon the edge of the web A. 'lhe lian ges B are made sufficiently wide to protect the top and the bottom of the pole from the Wear of the ring and the neck-yoke. C is a projection, serving as a stop to the ring of the neck yoke to keep the pole from passing through the ring. I usually make this iron tip of malleable iron, cast in the Ordinary mauner of casting small articles of malleable iron. The center-Web A may be made continuous or solid 5 but I ordinarily leave openings D, for the purpose of making the castings lighter, as I nd that sufficient strength still remains.
The iron is attached to the pole by placing` the Web A in the slit made in the end of the pole by a saw or other suitable instrument, just Wide enough for said web A. The iron may be further Secured in Said slit by one or more pins or bolts, E. A
It will be observed that instead of making the Stop-iron (ljust in the shape shown, its shape may be varied to any of the Well-known constructions ofirons used for the various purposes for which irons are used upon the ends of vehicle-poles, always providing that they are cast to and made a part of the flange B.
I am aware that iron tips for the poles of vehicles, made so as to inclose or surround the end of the pole, and having irons of various kinds attached to them or east with them, are old. I therefore do not Claim an iron tip for vehicles, as such; but
I do claim- An iron tip for vehicle-poles having web A, ange B, and projection C, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
