F. F. LEG ER FOUNTAIN BRUSH Filed July 16 Patented Aug. 3, 1926.
UNITED STATES FRANK F. LEGER, OF BANGOR, MAINE.
FOUNTAIN BRUSH.
Application filed July 16, 1925. Serial No. 44,074.
My invention relates to improvements in brushes provided with a head having a reservoir to contain liquid, and equipped with valve means for permitting discharge of the liquid as required, into a pad, a mass of bristles or any other desired applicator secured to the lower side of the head.
The principal object of the invention is to provide an exceptionally simple and inexpensive, yet an efiicient and desirable brush or .the character set'forth, and with this object in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter described andclaimed,--the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing;
Figure 1 a vertical longitudinal sectional view-through one form of brush consti a ted in accordance with my invention. Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view, on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure dis a vertical transverse sectional view as indicated by line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Figure at is a. perspective view of the perforated plate shown in section in Fig. 1. Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view partly in elevation, showing a diii'erent form of construction. I Theior'm' of the invention disclosed in Figs; 1 to 4 will first be described. The numeral 1 designates an elongated body prefer ably formed of wood or metal, said body being provided with an elongated recess 2 which extends substantially throughout the length'of said body and opens through the upper side thereof. The bottom of the recess 2 is formed with an opening 3 leading to the bottom of the head 1, and a sheet metal plate 5 is-securedto said bottom of the recess 2, by brads or the like 6, said plate-having a relatively small opening 5 which communicates with the opening 3. Secured to the bottom of the head or-body 1, and extending across the opening 3, is a plate 7 having perforations 8 which communicate with the opening 3 and suitably secured to said bot tom of the head or body 1, for instance by nails 9, is a pad 10 but any other desired form of applicator may be used. The plate 7 and opening 3 form an auxiliary reservoir adapted to receive a small quantity of liquid from the main reservoir formed by the recess 2 and the liquid from said auxiliary reservoir will run slowly through the perforations 8 to saturate a portion of the applicator 10. To restrict this saturation however, t o e en p tion only f the app1icater, the inner end of the plate 8 is provided with a downwardly bent, preferablv curved flange 11 which extends into the aforesaid applicator and forms a barrier to confine the liquid to the desired portion or said applicator. l/Vhen the applicator is in the form of a pad, this flange also tends to assist in preventing longitudinal creeping or the pad upon the body or head 1.
A yieldablewasher 12 contacts normally with the upper side of the plate 5 and is secured against the lower side ofa horizontal, spring metal strip1'3, near on'e'endjoi said strip, while the" otherend of this strip is suitably secured to the" bottom of tlfe recessj2l Preferably, a nail or screw 1% passes through the' last named end of the strip into'the lower portion of th'e'hea'd' or body 1 and a spacing washer 15 is interposed between the strip and the recess bottom, as shown. In securing the washer 12 to the strip 13, I prefer to employ a screw or thelike 16 passing downwardly through these parts and having its lower end 17 loosely receivedin' the openin'gb, so that it forms a guide which insures proper seating of the washer upon the plate 5', to normally'seal the-aforesaid opening 5.
The endof the strip 13, adjacent the washer 12, is provided with a pair of integral, horizontally spaced, upwardly and inwardly bent fingers 18. A verticalstem 19 has its lower end'received between the fingers 18and' provided with a head 20 confined between said fingers and the underlying portion of'the strip 13. The upper end'of the stem 19 passes through an opening 21 in a suitable cover 22 which is secured by screws or the like 23 to the upper side of the head or body 1. Preferably, a leather washer 2 1-. or a washer of some other yieldable material, is secured to the lower side of the cover and snuglysurroundsthe stem 19 to prevent leakage, and I provide a coiled compression spring 25 around said stem, the upper end of the spring contacting with the washer, while its lower end engages the fingers 18. The spring tends to compress the yieldable washer 24 and thus causes inward crowding of its inner edge into tight contact with the stem 19 and it will also be seen that this spring co-operates with the tension of the strip 13 in holding the washer 12 tightly seated against the plate 5.
In the constructlon illustrated, the upper end of the s em 19 is provided with a head 26 engaged by a bifurcated, fingerperated lever 27, which is mounted upon the cover 22.
The reservoir or recess 2 may be filled with liquid of any desired character, through a filling neck 28 having a removablec ap 29, and by pressing upon the lever 27, the valve washer 12 will be unseated, thus allowing some of the liquid to flow into the aux liary reservoir 3. Then, the lever 27 is released and the feed from the main reservoir is cut oil, allowing the small quantity of liquid in the auxiliary reservoir to slowly gravitate through the perforations 8 into the applicator 1, saturation ofthis applicator being restricted to the desired portion by the flange or barrier 11. Thus, one end of the applicator may be used to apply the liquid, for instance, shoe polish, and the other end thereof may be employed to efi ect a polishing operation.
In the form of construction shown in Fig. 5, a smaller head 1" is shown having a handle 1, said head being formed with a main reservoir or recess 2 and with an opening 3" from the bottom of said reservoir to the lower side or" the head. A perforated plate 7 is secured to the lower side of the head 1 and extends across the opening 3, and another plate 5 is secured to the bottom of the recess 2 across the opening 3", said plate 5 having a central opening controlled by a valve 12 which is carried by a spring-pressed stem 19, the upper end or the spring 25 being in contact with a packing washer 24.." similar to the washer 4:. The upper end of stem 19 passes through the cover 22" of the head l and is associated with a finger-operated lever 27". Secured to the lower side of the head 1" is an appropriate applicator 10. For supplying liquid to the recess 2", a port 28 has been shown closed normally by a plug 29.
Either form of the invention is simple and inexpensive, may be readily operated, andwill be highly etlicient and desirable. As excellent results are obtainable from the details disclosed, such details are preferably followed, but within the scope of the invention as claimed, modifications may be made.
Preferably, the end of the body 1 opposite the valved liquid discharge means, is
pl ed for polishing the surface.
i claim 1. A tountain brush co1npr1s1ng a head having a liquid reservoir and valved outlet passage from said reservoir through the we r side of the head; anapplicator cared by the lower side of said head-to reive liquid from the reservoir, and a barer carried by said lower side of the head ssage and projecting into the applicator 'estrict the liquid to the portion of the applicator adjacent said outlet passage.
:2. A fountain brush comprising a head having a liquid reservoir and valved outlet passage from said reservoir through the lower side of the head; an applicator carried by the lower side of said head toreceive liquid from the reservoir, and a periterated plate secured to the lower side of said head across said outlet passage, said plate having a downwardly projecting flange extending into the applicator to restrict spreading of the liquid in said applicator.
3. A fountain brush comprising a head provided at its lower side with an applicator, said head having a liquid reservoir, an outlet opening from this reservoir, and another opening from the reservoir to the upper side of the head, a valve normally closing the aforesaid opening, an actuating stem for said valve passing through the second named opening, a packing washer surrounding said stem and secured against the top of the reservoir, and a coiled compression spring surrounding the stern and exerting downward force thereon, the upsaaced relation with the liquid outlet )er end of said snrin contactin with the V lower side of said packing washer to exert a compression action on the latter, thereby crowding its inner edge inwardly into tight contact with the stem.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.
