WAX-PAPER CONTAINER AND CUTTER.
Application led April 30, 1923. Serial No. 635,452.
This invention relates to improvements in dispensing apparatus for paper in rolls, and has for its object the provision of novel means to rotatably mount a roll of sheet material, such as waxed paper, within an improved container of simple form and inexpensive manufacture adapted to protect the same from contamination, provided with means to retain the roll and paper strip withdrawn therefrom under tension to prevent premature unrolling, and with devices for readily advancing the Vpaper the 'desired length and to neatly sever the same from the strip.
It is the province of the invention to improve generally the type of devices to which our invention appertains, and still further lobjects and advantages of the invention will be apparent in the course of the detailedv description hereinafter set forth.
The invention consists in the novel construction of a'c'ontainer as aforesaid, and the adaptation and combination therewith of parts and devices for accomplishing the re` sults outlined, which will be fully described in the following' specification, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and finally pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paperroll container embodying our invention.
Fig. 2 is a view in front elevation of the same, shown partly in section. Fig.`3 is a view in side elevation of the 85 same with the cover partly broken away.
Fig. 4 is a view in cross section online 4 4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to said views, the reference numeral 5 indicates the rear wall of a paper-roll container of our invention, 6 the front wall thereof, 7 the bottom, and 8. and 9 designate the right and left hand vend-V walls of the container, respectively. SaidA container is desirably made of sheet-metal l5 but other suitable materials may be einplo ed.k
aid" side walls of the container are each formed with a vertically disposed slot, in-
dicated by numeral 10, -terminating in a semi-circular bearing l1 concentric with the longitudinal axis of said container and are adapted to receive the ends` of a spindle 12 disposed in the axial line of the container tween. At the same time the notches 19 I and upon which the roll 13 of paper is wound. l y
A cover is provided for said container and comprises a top 14 which is hingedly connected to. the back wall at 15, a front dependent plate 16 `and side plates 17 and 18. Said side plates fare formed with a semi-circular notch 19 on their lower edges which, when the cover is closed will rest upon the spindle ends. The front plate 16 of said cover is in relatively close parallel relation with the front wall 6 and desirably extends downwardly thereover for a considerable distance and provides therebetween al confined channel through which the paper strip 20 drawn from said roll is threaded.
21 indicates an opening vin said front plate through which the paper strip is exposed and admits ofthe operator frictionally engaging the aper therethrough and advancing the strip so that it can be grasped suiliciently to be pulled outwardly from the roll. The lower edge 160`of said front plate may be beveled to provide a tearing edge.
' The upper edge 22 of said front wall terminates at a slightly lower elevation than said walls 8 and 9 so that space is provided for the passage of the paper strip thereover when the cover is closed, and in proximity thereto an inwardly directed lug 23 projects from each said wall 8 and 9 disposed slightly below, and parallel with said edge 22.
The paper roll, as will be clearly seen from the drawings, is positioned in the container so that its ends are in close proximity to the end walls 8 and v9 and the ends of the spindle 12 on which the paper roll is wound are operatively supported in the bearings 11. The strip of paper 20 is then advanced under said y .hlugZ and then over the edge 22 ofthe front wall and thence downwardly. The cover may then be closed and the paper will be conned closely between said front plate 16 and thefront wall of the container and will be frictionally engaged therebewill rest upon the spindle ends and tend to retain the roll against rotary motion.
When it is desired to obtain a piece of paper from the roll the operator by engagmg the paper exposed through the opening 21 with a finger or thumb and by Cil the strip downwardly thereby will cause the paper to project beyond the lower cutting edge 160, as shown in Fig. 3, wlrere it can be grasped and drawn out to the desired length and severed on said cutting edge.
In'drawing out said strip in the manner just. described the front portion of said cover will be raised slightly thus relieving the spindle l2 from the weight of the cover and will admit of the roll turning more freely while immediately the paper is severed the cover will return to its normal position and act as a retarding device on thev roll and prevent any accidental movement of the roll while the paper strip will be engaged againY by the front plate to prevent any retraction of the strip and any loose coils of paper forming about said roll. Vhen the cover of the container is lifted for any reason the lugs 23 will retain the paper strip contact withi the front edge 22 and prevent the paper being displaced or recoiling about the roll.
The device is very simple in construction and advantageous in use, particularlyV Jfor the protection and conservation of waxed paper suitable for wrapping sandwiches', and the like. lVhile such an application of the invention and analogous uses and purposes is foreseen it will beunderstood that all such uses and purposes that :the invention is adapted for,V together with such modifications Yas may suggest themselves within the scope of the claims, are deemed to be within the spirit of the invention and included within the protection afforded hereinunder.
l. In a device of the class described, the combination of a container having rectangular end and front walls, provided with bearings in said end walls, Ya spindle upon which a roll of paper is wound rotatably supported in said bearings, a hinged cover having side plates overlying said side walls, each said side plate being formed with a notch normally adapted to engageA said spindle, a
front plate overlying said front wall to afford a passage for a strip of paper from said roll, said front plate being formed with an Viopening whereby the strip may be Yadvanced, and a tearing edge on its lower extremity, said front wall "having its upper edge terminating below the level of said side walls and over which said paper strip extends, and a pair of paper-engaging lugs adjacent said upper edge of the front wall below which the paper strip isthreaded.
2. ln a device of the class described, the combination of a container having a rectangular end and front walls, a spindle upon which a roll of paper is wound rotatably mounted in bearings in said end walls, a
Vcover hingedly connected tosaid container having side plates overlying said side walls Yprovided with notches adapted to engage said spindle. a front plate overlying said front wall affording passage for a strip of paper from said roll, said front plate being formed with an opening and a. tearing edge on its lower extremity. and means adjacent said front wall througln which said strip is threaded'fto prevent the recoirling of the paper strip when the cover is lifted.
3. In a device of the class described, the combination of a container having rectangular end and front walls, a spindle upon which a roll of paper is wound rotatably supported in said end walls, a cover hingedly connected to said container having a front plate overlying said front wall affording a passage for a strip of paper from said roll, a lug fiXedly secured in each of said end walls parallel with the upper edge of said front wall and spaced therefrom to depress the strip of paper below the upper edge of said front wall.
