Theseimprovements relate to small portable containers adapted to hold waxed paper and the like in rolls for dispensing the same while maintaining the paper in clean, un-

broken and sanitary condition.

One object of these improvements is to provide a form of such container in WhlCh the several parts are held strongly together in v the closed position. Another is in provisions whereby the cutting edge of the paper-severing device is so disposed as not to injure the hands of the user or mar furniture or other articles with which the device may come into contact when the container is closed as for use. The device is peculiarly easy and convenient in use, and is also simple and of low cost.

a pair of end walls 11 integral with the slde wall, a bottom wall 12 having a pair of end walls 13 integral therewith, and a top wall 14, the latter extending only about half way across the top from side to side. There is thus produced an unusually strong end wall construction, and without resort to any glueing operation, the latter being ob- 56 jectiona le in various ways, including the cost of the labor involved.

At the upper corner line 19 of the side wall 16 there is an integral leaf-like extension consisting of the parts 20, 21 and 22, the 00 part 20 coacting with the top wall 14 to form a combined to wall ext-ending fromside to side. At 23 (between parts 20 and 21) the material is offset inward or normally downward, and the pater leaf 21 extends thence so as to underlie the wall 14, while the free end part 22 turns, downward diagonally across the corner as shown by Fig. 2.

The offset at 23 provides that the top or outer surface of the top wall elements -14 and 20 are in substantially the same plane, which is a good feature in itself, but my object in this regard is a more important one.

At the free edge portion of top wall 14 there is secured a paper-severing device 25 consisting of a strip of thin sheet metal and which may have a straight cutting edge but which preferably has its cutting edge serrated. As shown by Fig. 2 thatcutting edge is at the offset portion 23 when the device is in'closed position and thus that ed e is belowthe general outer or top surface 0 the parts 14 and 20 and is not only itself protected but is so protectingly covered or guarded as to prevent its doing damage to the hands of the user or'to articles of furniture, etc., in connection with which the device maybe used.. Heretofore, so far as I amaware the cutting edge of such devices has stood away or projected outwardly to such extent as to dovarh ous kinds of damage and injury, to catch in' various articleswhen thedevice is put away in drawersor elsewhere, and to prove objecbl h v In the folding of the end wall elements new 6 m vanous 0t er ways When a roll of paper as 30 is to be inserted, after usin'g'upjthe one' reviously installed, the end walls 17 are free .by disengaging the tabs 17a from the slits 11a, whereupon'the side wall .16 and its associated parts may be swung away on the hinge-like connection at 18 (formed by scoring the cardboard stock,

as is done at the other bending lines). The opening for inserting the rol is unusually large. A free end part 31, 31a of the web is drawn away from the roll and then the side wall 16 and its associated'elements are folded into the closed position with the tabs 17a again assing through the slits 11a and with the we 31 31a passing above the sections 22 and 21 and issuin atthe cutter 25.

Preferably at about the middle of the top wall section 20 I cut out on three sides a leaf 32, as shown in Fig. 1,' leaving a finger opening 33 which is substantiallyclosed by the leaf 32 except when the user wishes to withdraw a section of the paper web, at which time he may press down with the back of his finger upon the leaf 32, reach under the free edge ,ortionof the wall 14 and cutter 25 and with raw some of the web as 31a. Having withdrawn as much as is desired that exposed section is simply torn off against the cutter 25.

Sometimes the roll of paper as 31' has a. tendency to turn during the tearing-0H operation, especially in some constructions. At 35 I have shown another tab cut out on three sides from the body of the side wall 16 and which may be pressed inward by the operators thumb while holding the device whereby the roll of aper may be held frictionally to prevent suc turning and insure the tearing away of'the exposed part of the web on the straight line desired.

Various other constructions of the container itself, as to the formation and the securing together of the several walls or parts may be employed, and various modifications and departures may also be made in the more essential features of the improvements shown. I therefore contemplate as being included herein all such changes, variations and departures from what is thus specifically illustrated and described as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

I claim 1. A container of the character described having a wall portion carrying apaper-sev ering device wlth acutting edge and having a wall .portion including a leaf-like part adapted to extend under said other wall portion, there being an offset in said secondlyside walls and a top wall, the latter consist ing of two arts, one part having. an extenesion normal y underlying. the other part, said underlyin extension being oflset normally downwar where it begins to extend in underlying relation t0-the other part," said other part having a paper-severing device with a 'an end wall extension adapte cutting edge at said ofiset, said ofiset and said cutting edge being within the area of the top wall as a whole.

In a portable dispensin container of the character described for ho ding a roll of paper comprising a hollow bod having oppositely-dis ose'd end walls, a ttoni wall oppositelyisposed side walls, and a top wall comprising a plurality of sections, one of said sections being connected to one, of the side walls, another of said sections being connected to the other side wall'andhavm a free end portion adapted to extend un er the first-mentioned to wall section, said first-mentioned top wal section having a free edge extending longitudinally with and between the side walls, a paper severing device extending along said free ed e, said secondlymentioned top wall section avi'ng an offset normally-downward substantially at said paper-severing device whereby the cutting edge of said device is normally below the to surface of said secondly-mentioned top wa 1 section at said ofiset.

In a portable dispensing container of the character described for holding a roll of paper, the combination of a bottom wall, oppositely-disposed side walls, and a top wall section of less width than is the bottom wall and having a paper-severing free edge thereof extending longitudinally between'the side at one end to be turned up substantially at right angles to the bot walls, the bottom walllhavin tom wall, said top'wall section having at one end an'end wall extension adapted to be turned downward to overlie said other end wall extension, with means for interlocking said two end wall extensions together, the
