Abstract
A roll holder (1) for rolls of packaging paper (5) characterized by a horizontal slot (3) at the front (16) through which the edge of the paper of the roll (5) inside the roll holder (1) is fed and a lid (2) having a front flap (2b) carrying at his lower edge a sawed edge (4) which cuts the paper into the required lengths as it is pulled out through the above slot (3). When the lid (2) is closed the sawed edge (4) is positioned at a level just under that of the horizontal slot (3).
Description
- This patent application for a utility model concerns a roll holder for rolls of packaging paper of any length with device for cutting sheets into the required length.
- The item according to the invention is made of cardboard, and is designed to hold paper rolled on reels; it ensures gradual and orderly unrolling of the paper rolls outwards as well as the possibility of cutting the same in sheets of the required dimensions.
- The device according to the invention is ideal for shops dealing with the public that use packaging paper for parcels and other items.
- Shop dealers are currently forced to keep sheets of packaging paper stacked on the sales counter, but in the future, thanks to the device in question, it will be possible for these to store packaging paper in preformed rolls in roll holders of the type according to the invention; these not only offer the advantage of saving space but also make using the packaging paper more practical.
- Consequently, packaging paper which is currently sold in sheets of standard dimensions, may in future be sold in continuous lengths of paper rolled on reels and housed in roll holders of the type according to the invention in that said roll holders permit cutting the roll of paper into sheets of the required length.
- While it is true that roll holders of this kind are currently available on the market, in view of the fact that these have a different structure, they are not as versatile as the model according to the invention, above all when it is necessary to load very heavy and long rolls of packaging paper.
- These conventional roll holders are in fact characterized by an elongated parallelepiped shape which permits housing the paper roll; conventional roll holders have a lid hinged to the rear longitudinal wall with a sawed and fairly sharp edge along the bottom horizontal edge of the front longitudinal wall, which is used to tear off lengths of paper from the roll in the required sizes.
- It should however be noted that because of the fact that the sawed edge is positioned on the base of the roll holder, this conventional model does not permit cutting sheets of paper while the roll holder rests on a working surface.
- In other words, every time it is necessary to cut off a sheet of paper, it is necessary to lift the roll holder firmly with one hand while pulling the sheet of paper downwards against the sawed edge.
- It is quite obvious that it would not be possible to tear off a sheet of paper without lifting the conventional roll holder in that there would otherwise not be enough space under the sawed edge to tear the sheet of paper downwards.
- It is easy enough to appreciate that said conventional roll holders may only be used for small rolls of tin foil or clingwrap; with rolls of this kind, which are small and light, the roll holder can easily be lifted to tear off the sheets.
- On the other hand, these conventional roll holders cannot be used for large and heavy rolls of packaging paper in that the dimensions and weight of said rolls would make it impossible to repeatedly lift the roll holder to tear off the sheets.
- The roll holder according to the invention has been designed to resolve these problems and offers the advantage of cutting the sheet without having to lift the roll holder from the horizontal surface; it is obvious that the device according to the invention is ideal for rolls of packaging paper of any length and weight.
- The device according to the invention has a structure which is fundamentally similar to that of conventional roll holders: it is characterized by an elongated parallelepiped shape having a squared cross-section, and is sealed at the top by a lid which can open - upwards and backwards - by rotating around the upper horizontal edge of the rear wall of the holder.
- When the lid is lowered, it encompasses the transverse walls of the holder, as well as the front longitudinal wall for about half their upper lengths.
- The first innovation of the new device is that its sawed edge, used for tearing off the sheets of paper, is not mounted directly on the casing of the holder, but on the front longitudinal edge of the above box-shaped lid.
- The second innovation is a horizontal slot, whose length is just a little more than the length of roll in the holder, positioned towards the top of the front longitudinal wall of the holder; said slot being totally concealed by the lid when the same is lowered and closed.
- Regarding the practical use of the device, a roll having a suitable length must first be placed inside the holder and the front edge of the paper pulled through the front horizontal slot.
- Once a sheet of paper in the required length has been pulled out through the slot, the lid is lowered into its cutting position, whereby the sawed edge is parallel and slightly lower than the slot through which the paper has been pulled.
- Holding the lid firmly down, the paper can be torn off by pulling upwards against the cutting edge of the sawed edge of the lid.
- It is quite obvious that the main innovation of the device according to the invention is that of allowing the sheets of paper to be torn off by pulling upwards; in fact this operating method ensures that it is possible to cut sheets without having to move the holder from its resting surface, so that the same may be used even for very heavy and large rolls.
- Another practical advantage of the new device is that the method used for cutting the sheets ensures that a short edge of paper will remain outside the slot so that the sheets remain handy and easy to unroll after each cut.
- This is possible thanks to the difference in height of the sawed edge of the lid and that of the slot on the holder through which the paper is drawn; as mentioned previously the sawed edge of the lid is lower than that of the slot on the holder so that the length of paper which remains out of the front slot after a sheet has been cut, corresponds exactly to the difference in height of the sawed edge and the horizontal slot.
- It is obvious that in order to grasp this piece of paper, it will be sufficient to lift the lid just enough to open the horizontal slot from which the paper projects.
- For major clarity the description according to the invention continues with reference to the enclosed drawings which are intended for purposes of illustration and not in a limiting sense, whereby figure 1 is an axonometric view of the device according to the invention, with the half of the lid removed to expose the interior of the holder.
- With reference to the enclosed figure the device according to the invention consists of a cardboard box (1) with incorporated lid (2) which folds along the upper horizontal edge of the rear longitudinal wall (1a) of box (1).
- The box (1) has along its front longitudinal wall (1b) a horizontal slot (3) positioned slightly under the upper edge of the front wall (1b) and characterized by a length slightly under than that of the wall (1b).
- The lid (2) is characterized by two side flaps (2a) and a front flap (2b) respectively encompassing the sides (1c) of the box (1) and its front wall (1b) for approximately half their upper length; a sawed edge (4) being provided on the bottom edge of the front flap (2b) of the lid (2).
- The height of said front flap (2b) is such that its bottom sawed edge rests - when the lid is lowered - at a level just under that of the horizontal slot (3) of the box (1).
- The number (5) shows the paper roll in the box (1) while the number (5a) shows the front edge of paper pulled from the box (1) through the slot (3).
