INTERCHANGEABLE SCREEN AND PANEL DOOR.
Application filed June 8, 1925. Serial No. 34,686.
This invention relates to improvements in doors, such as are commonly used at the entrances of dwelling and like houses, and has as one of its objects to provide doors which may be used in cold weather as a' storm proof panelled door and in the warm weather as a screen door admitting air but preventing the entrance of insects, etc. etc.
Another object is to provide doors in which the panel members may be easily and readily removed and screen members subst tuted without the removal of the door from its j ambs. v
A further feature is in the provision of a neat appearing structure, cheap to construct and practical in its application.
These several objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts herein described and shown in the accompanying drawing, forming a material part of this disclosure. and in which Figure 1 is a front elevational view of a door embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1, and drawn to an enlarged scale.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 33 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 but showing a screen substituted for the panel.
Figure 5 is a view like Figure 3 showing the screen element of Figure 4.
Figures 6 and 7 are fragmentary transverse sectional views of slightly varying frame members.
In the drawing the numeral 10 designates the side jambs of a door connected at the top by .a stile 11 and having a threshold at the bottom, all of these elements being of old and well known construction.
The door is composed of frame sides 13 rigidly connected by cross pieces 14 at the top and similar cross members 15 and 16 at the bottom, these latter members having between them the usual fixed panel 17.
A downward extending flange 18 reaches longitudinally from near the outer surfaces of the upper cross member 14:, and the intermediate member 15 is similarly provided with a flange 19.
In the modification, shown in Figure. 5, the member 15 is bevelled outwardly from a raised rib 20, the members being in all other respects alike.
The inner adjacent edges of the side frames 13 are grooved lengthwise at the center of their widths presenting open recesses 21, having extending flanges 22 at the rear, reaching past the corresponding flanges 23 at the front.
On one of the frame members 13 is inserted a thin spring element 24, reaching from top to bottom, its free edge extending co incident with the flange 23.
. in the modification shown in Figure 4, the flanges 25 and 26 are of uniform length and the spring strip 24 is omitted.
A panel frame 27 is grooved, as at 28, at its side edges to receive the tenons or flanges one of the frame members being bevelled, as at 29, and the width of the panel frame is so much less than the width of the opening that the frame 27 may be pressed to one side and thereafter swung outwardly, the bevelled surface 29 permitting such movement and the spring 24; yielding in accordance.
F ixed within the frame 27 is a transparent panel 30 held by the usual glazing methods indicated, and in order to retain the frame 27' in its closed position, a button 32 is pivoted on the door frame member in which the spring strip is fixed.
A similar frame 33 having like grooves 3% in its side edges, may be substituted for the frame 27, and in place of a panel, is provided with a screen 35 held by cleats 36 shown in Figure 4-.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the frames 2? and are readily interchanged, merely turning the button and manipulating the frame without the use of tools.
Having thus described my invention. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A door comprising tone 0 and erosive side members, a strip of spring metal ii d in one of said members to extend yieldingly into the adjacent groove, a frame COIlC spondingly tenoned and grooved to engage said members and being normally free to move edgewise therein. one of the frame members being bevelled adjacent its outer edge and adapted to engage said strip on the inner surface of the adjacent groove. and a manually operable pivoted button on one of said door members to retain said frame in a fixed position.
In witness whereof I have affixed my signature.
MATHIAS KINDSVOGEL.
