Feb. 9, 1943. T. M. HEsTER WEATHERASTRIP FOR DOORS AND THE LIKE Filed Sept. 25, 1941 2 Sheets-Sheet l l Hf .m. M y u W n A Iton/ey Feb. 9, 1943.- r M. HEsTER WEATHERSTRIP FOR DOORS THE LIKE Filegsept. 25, 1941 2 sheets-sheet 2 f Inventor Attorney Patented Feb. 9, 1943 UNITED STATES PTET OFFICE WEATHER STRIP FOR DOORS AND THE LIKE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in weatherstrips for doors, windows, and other openings, the principal object in view being to provide a device of this character which will positively prevent dust, snow, rain, and wind from seeping in around the edges of doors, or window sashes, and which is easy to apply, strong and durable, inexpensive to manufacture and install, and will not interfere with opening the' door or window as the case may be.
Other and subordinate objects are also comprehended by my invention, all of which, tgether with the precise nature of my improvement, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claim are read with ref-- @rence to the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in front elevation illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3 is ya fragmentary view in front elevation illustrating the hinge drawn to an enlarged scale,
Figure 4 is a view in section taken on the line 4--4 of Figure 3,
Figure 5 is a view in front elevation of a modied adaptation of my invention,
Figure 6 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 5 and drawn to an enn larged scale, and
Figure 7 is a view in transverse section taken on the line 'I-l of Figure 5 and drawn to an enlarged scale.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, and rst to Figures l, 2, 3 and 4, according to -a preierred purpose of my invention, top, bottom and side weatherstrips I, 2 and 3, respectively, of
rectangular form in cross-section and having a felt covering 4 on all four sides thereof are applied to the outer face of the usual swinging door 5 to extend along the top, bottom and side edges thereof, respectively, and t ush againslL the top, bottom and side members I and 8 of the door frame 9. The strips I, 2, 3 may be of any desired size, transversely, and formed of Wood, metal, or any other suitable material. Preferably the side strips 3 extend from top to bottom of the door 5 and the top and bottom strips I, 2 t lengthwise in between the side strips 3 iiush against the same.
Each strip I, 2, 3 is secured to the door 5 by a plurality of hinges each of which comprises a fixed plate I secured to the door 5 by screws I I,
and a longer movable plate I2 curving from the pintle I3 of the hinge over the outer side of the strips I, 2, 3, as the case may be, to which side it is secured flat at its outer end as by screws I4. A coil spring I5 is suitably arranged around the pintle I3 of each of said hinges to urge the movable plate I2, and consequently the strip to which the plate is secured, against the outer face of the door 5 and the inner face of the door frame 9.
In Figures 5, 6 and 7 side strips I B and I'I have been shown applied to side edges of the upper and lower sashes I8, I9 of a window, a top strip 20 along the upper edge of the upper sash I8, a bottom strip 2I along the lower edge of the lower sash I 9, and an intermediate strip 22 along the top of the lower sash I9, .all of said strips being 'similar to those previously described with exceptions presently noted. The side strips I6 and I 1 are designed to bear against the sashes I8, I9, the strips I6 against the inner edges of the usual parting strip 23, as shown for instance in Figure 7, and the strips II against the inner edges of the inner stop strip 24. The top vstrip 20 is vdesigned to t against the bottom edge of the parting strip 23 and t in between the side strips I8. 'I'he bottom strip 2| fits under' the side strips I'I for the lower sash I 9 and the intermediate strip 22 under the side strips I6 for the upper sash I 8, and overlaps the bottom of the upper sash.
The side strips I6 for the top sash I8 are se cured by hinges 25 to the inner trim 26 of the window to swing outwardly over said trim so as to be out of interfering relation to the lower sash I9 and permit the latter to be opened.
The top strip 20 issecured to the trim 26 by hinges 27 the bottom strip 2I to the spool cap 28 by hinges 29, and the intermediate strip 22 to the top of the lower sash I9 by hinges 3U. The side strips I'I for the lower sash I9 are secured thereto by hinges 3I and are therefore adapted to be raised and lowered with said lower sash to- -gether with the intermediate strips 22.
All of the hinges 25, 21, 29, 3i), 3| are similar to the hinges previously described with the exception that the movable plate, as shown at 32 in Figure 7, is right angular in the case of the hinges 25, 21 and 3B to facilitate fitting around the inner edge of the window frame 26. Also in the case of the hinges 25 there are prefer ably three on each side of the upper sash I8 vertically spaced apart and the intermediate hinge 25 on each side is provided on the movable plate 33 thereof with a forwardly extending post 34. A
NV hat I claim is:
The combination with a frame forming a rectangular opening, and a similarly shaped closure member fitting in said opening of transversely square Weather strips covered with resilient material and extending along the top, bottom and side edges of said closure Within said frame in flat engagement with one face of said closure and the inner face of said frame, and means urging said strips into tight engagement with said faces and comprising hinges upon which said strips are swingable from engagement with said faces to obviate interference of the strips with said closure during opening of the same.
