Description

ALBUM Filed SSP- 5. 1925 TIL Tabl@ Patented July 20, 1926.
VERA HAVEMEYER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ALBUM.
Application filedl September 5, 1925. Serial No. 54,663.
My invention relates to books and more particularly to photograph albums wherein peculiar and evident advantages are procured. It is well known that the ordinary album is neither flexible as to the size of photograph which it will accommodate to advantage nor does it afford sufficient protection tothe photograph to avoid deterioration so that such photograph could not lo again be framed. In an album embodying my invention, I provide a leaf which is composed of two members or pieces between which-the photograph is placed. In order to conform to the size of the photograph,
I have on one of the members a plurality of areas, one within the other, which are bounded by or enclosed within perforations so that the proper one may be removed and leave the remainder of the page or leaf as a frame for the picture. Therefore, van album employing my invention affords maximum protection to a photograph and insures a frame therefore of the right opening.
Other and further advantages will appear in the following specification of which the drawings form a part. In these drawings; Figure l is an open album showing two leaves, each having a derent arrangement.
Figure 2 is a top plan of Figure 1. Figure 3 is a transverse section of a leaf. I show in Fig. 1 an album of the loose leaf type although it is evident that any kind isequally well adapted to my invention. rl`he cover is shown at 1 which has in this instance the b-inding rings 2, 3 and 4L which hold a number of leaves or pages 5 and 6 while the leaves 7 and 8 illustrate preferred forms of my invention. These leaves are preferably formed as in Fig. 3 which is a cross section through either 7 or 8, where 9 and 10 are two members or pieces joined at the edgel l1 by being bent back one upon the other from the same piece of material as shown or they may be separate pieces suitably joined at the edge 11. The other edge may be either open or closed; I show it open and arranged for loose leaf binding with the reinforcing strips 11 and 12 and the holes 13 and 14. On one of the members,
either 9 or 10 as may be chosen, I arrange a plurality of areas such as 15 and 16 and 17 which are one within the other and which are enclosed by perforations as at 18, 19 and 20. It is more desirable to have these perforations enclose symmetrical areas as indicated by the rectangles 15, 16 and 17 ab 'though any other' form of areas regular or irregular, may be used.' On leaf 8 is a variation of the perforation enclosed areas; these being ellipses as at 21, 22 and 23, the respective perforations being at 24, 25 and 26. In order to enhance the attractiveness of the part of the leaf forming the frame, I prefer to associate some form of ornamentation, shown at 27, 28 and 29 which may be of any nature and either extend on both sides of the perforations as on leaf 7 or may be on only one side as at 30, 31 and V32 of leaf 8, it being evident that where the ornamentation is on both sides, the perforations must pass through it. By having a plurality of areas as described and which may be as numerous as desired within the capacity of any particular sheet, a wide variety of sizes of photographs may be accommodated in the album and any one leaf may be used for any single photograph by removing the most suitably sized area by tearing or cutting along the perforations enclosing that area. This will leave not only a properly sized opening but also an attractive one where the ornamentation is used. After the particular area has been removed it is apparent that an ornamental edge is provided which extends completely around the area and further, in addition to this ornamental edge, there is provided adjacent the latter an ornamental border. It will be clear that by providing both an ornamental edge and an ornamental border the attractiveness of the album leaf is greatly enhanced. I am aware of the patent to Kidd No. 1,261,133 of April 2, 1918, but my invention diers from this patent in that the latter merely provides an ornamental edge but makes no provision for an ornamental border surrounding the picture receiving opening. The photograph being inserted between the two members such as 9 and 10, it is completely protected except for the portion exposed in the opening just described and may be removed at any time and separately framed without it having been damaged or soiled in the album.
It will be clear that my invention is susceptible to many changes and variations without departing from the spirit thereof and I desire to include all such changes and variations within the scope of my claims.
I claim:
1. In an album, a leaf formed of two members between which an ob'ect may be inserted, one of said members having a plurality of areas one within the other, each defined by an ornamental border, and a line of perforations surrounding said areas and so disposed with respect to said ornamental borders that when any of said areas are removed at the perforations an opening is formed having an edge and an independent ornamental border adjacent said edge and around said opening.
2. In an album, a leaf Vformed of two members between which an object may be inserted, one of said members having a plurality or' areas one within the other, each defined by an ornamental border, a line of perforations surrounding said areas and arranged within the ornamental borders whereby when any of said areas are removed at the perforations an opening is formed hava substantially straight edge and an independent ornamental border adjacent said edge and aroundsaid opening.
3. In an album, a leaf having a plurality of areas one within the other, each deiined by an ornamental border, and a line of per forations surrounding said areas and so disposed with respect to Said ornamental borders that when any of said areas are removed at the perforations an opening is formed having an edge and an independent ornamental borderadjacent said edge and around said opening.
l. In an album, a leaf having a plurality of areas one within the other, each defined by an ornamental border, a line of perforations surrounding said areas and arranged within the ornamental borders whereby any of said areas are removed at the perforations an opening is formed having an edge and an independent ornamental border adjacent said edge and around said opening.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
VERA HAVEMEYER.
