HEAD-REST FOR CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 15,931, dated October 21, 1856.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, C. A. MILLS, of the city and county of Dubuque, in the State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Head-Rest for RailroadCar Seats; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked therein, in which--` Figure 1 is a front view of seat, head rest and hat safe; Fig. 2, a side View of same, and Fig. 3 a front view of head rest with cushion removed. j
The nature of my invention consists in constructing an adjustable head rest to be attached to railroad car seats.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
Upon the rear of the back of the car seat, A, I attach the thimble, B, of suiicient size for the elevation or depression of the supporting rod, C. To the thimble, B, is rmly attached the spring, a, having upon its upper and inner side the fork f.

The rear of the supporting rod is notched for the purpose of adjusting the head rest at pleasure, the fork, f, working in and holding said support at any desired elevation by the action of the spring, c. rod has a curvature of a circle of eleven feet diameter, by which it can be adjusted to persons of various height.
The supporting is a coiled elliptical spring, the upper end being firmly attached to the supporting rod, the lower detached therefrom, and only called into action under heavy pressure, when it rests upon the supporting rod giving it a trm position, then acting `as an ordinary elliptic spring.

by which the necessary form is produced for the head.
The cord, s, extends from the clip to the top of the car. Directly above the head rest the cord is made double for the purpose of supporting the hat in the manner set forth in the drawing. When the rest is not in use, it may be drawn up by the cord to the top of the car, being then entirely out of the way. This arrangement is applicable to any car seat and does not interfere with the ordinary arrangements of car accommodations.
