UNITED STATES PATENT OEEreE.
MORRIS MATTSON, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOOKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,225, dated February 2, 1875; application filed January 14,- 1875.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS MATTsoN, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in Hooks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specitieation.
My invention relates to an improved hook for suspending articles of different kinds from the wall; and it consists in a plate, of any suitable kind, having a hook formed upon its lower end upon which to hang the article, and a steel barb upon the opposite side for insertion into the casing of a door or window or other wood-work along the wall when there is no nail that may be used for a similar purpose. It also consists in attaching the barb to the plate by means of a spring, so that the barb may be closed inward against the plate to be out of the way when not in use, all of which will be more fully described hereafter.
The accompanying drawings represent my invention.
a represents a plate of any suitable shape or size, having its lower end turned upward so as to form a hook, c, upon which a waterbag-syringe, or other articles, may be suspended. Through the upper end of the plate is made hole d, or a movable ring may be attached, which serves to hang the plate upon a nail or hook driven into the wall. Where there is no nail or other equivalent upon which to hang the plate, and there is a wood-work around the wall, the plate may be readily at-y 'cached to the wood by forcing' into it the barb e secured to its rear side. A recess is stamped into the plate to receive the square-headed shank of the hook, and the hook is movably held in place by the flat spring i. This spring is held in position by bending the edges of the plate over the ends of the spring, or the spring may be formed from part of the plate bent over, the spring being prevented from moving vertically by the head of the barb below, and the compressed edges or corners of the turned over edges of the plate above.
When thus held by the spring, the barb can be closed inward against the plate, so as to be out of the way when not wanted. This hook is especially intended to be used for hanging up or suspending water-bag or siphon syringes in bed-rooms and water-closets, by inserting' the barb into any available wood surface, as described, where there isno nail or its equivalent for a similar purpose, thereby enabling the individual to use the syringe at his pleasure.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The plate a, having hook c, hole or ring d, and barb e, substantially as described.
2. The plate a, recessed to receive the shank of the barb e, and the flat Yspring z', the parts being combined for operation, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 11th day of January, 1875.
