Be it known that I, REINHART SPENGLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hangers or Supporting Devices; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention has reference to improvements in that class of hangers or supporting devices which may be put to various uses, such as the suspension or hanging up of coats and other garments, or which may be used as picture-hooks and the like.

My present invention has for its principal object the production of a novel and simply and cheaply constructed hanger or supporting device of the general character to be hereinafter more fully specified, which is of a neat, ornamental, and small appearance, that it can be readily carried in the pocket or in a traveling-bag, to be quickly brought into use when required by easily forcing its pinhold into the woodwork or the wall, whereby the device is detachably fixed in its supporting position and is capable of carrying-the heaviest garments.

Other objects of this invention not at this timemore especially mentioned will be clearly understood from the following detailed description of the invention.

The invention consists, primarily, in the novel hanger or supporting device hereinafter more fully set forth; and, furthermore, this invention consists in the various arrangements and combinations of parts, all of which will be more particularly described in the following specification and then finally embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and form an essential part of this specification.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a face view, and Fig. 2 a rear View, of a hanger or supporting device embodying the principles of this invention. but still embodying the principles of this invention. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a pin-retaining block or means used with the hanger-or supporting device shown in said Fig. 5, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the pin used with the said hanger or supporting device.

Similar characters of reference are employed in the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the several figures of the drawings, the reference character 1 indicates the complete hanger or supporting device, the same comprising a main body 2 and a suspension or supporting hook 3 or other suitable supporting means, which may be conneoted with the said main body 2 in any suitable manner. In the present construction the said main body 2 and its supporting-hook 3 are formed from suitable sheet metal, the hook being integral with the said body, as shown; but it will be understood that the hook 3 may be made separate from the said main body 2 and may be suitably secured thereto by means of rivets or otherwise, or the said body 2 and hook 3 may be made in one piece from cast metal. The said main body 2 is'made, preferably, in the shape of a button or shell formed in the back with a concaved receiving-chamber 4, as shown in Figs. 2, 4, and 5 of the drawings, the said shell being preferably provided with a rivet-hole or perforation 5, as illustrated in said Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawings. Arranged within the said concaved depression 4 of the said shell or main body 2 is a pin retaining or holding block or means 6, the same-being made with a convex face 7 which is fitted upon the inner concave surface of the said depression 4 and has a rivet, post, or lug 8 extending therefrom, substantially as shown. This rivet, post, or lug 8 is inserted in the rivet-hole or perforation-5 of the main body or shell 2 and has its free end clenched or riveted over to form a rivet-head 9, and whereby the said pin-retaining block or means 6 andthe said main body or shell 2 are operatively connected.

It will be understood, however, that any other method or other suitable means may be employed for securing the said block or means 6 in its operative position in the back of the said main body or shellLEZ, and the said shell may be of any ornamental marginal configuration and may also be suitably ornamented upon its face, as will be clearly understood.

That the hanger or supporting device 1 can be detachably secured in its supporting position upon a wall or the like, a tapered pin 10 is employed, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings, the said pin 10 being inserted in a tapering holell in the said block or means 6. The said hole 11, as will be seen from an inspection of Fig. 4, extends from the convex face 7 of the said block in a downward direction and terminates in the straight face .12 of the said block 6, the taper of the said hole 11 corresponding to the taper of the enlarged portion 13 of the pin 10, so that the said end portion 13 of the pin will register with the tapered hole 11 and the end 14 of the said pin 10 will rest securely against the inner concave face of the said main body or shell 2, as shown, and whereby the said pin 10 is securely and positively retained in' its immovable and operative relation with respect to the other parts of the device, as will be clearly understood.

The angular arrangement of the point portion 15 of the said pin 10, which extends rearwardly from the said block or means 6, is such that the complete device can be easily and quickly secured in its fastened position upon a wall, door, or other framework of a room or the like and is adapted to be used as a garment-hanger or a picture-hook. The angle of the said pin 10 to the block or retaining means 6 is preferably thirty degrees, but may be varied, if desired, that the device can be easily secured in its fastened position upon a wall or the like and can be just as quickly removed therefrom, as will be clearly evident. The arrangement of the said pin is such that the greater the weight which is being suspended from the book 3, thus exerting a pull in a vertically downward direction, the greater will be the tendency to drive the said pin portion 15 more securely into the wall or the wood, whereby the hanger or supporting device 1 is more positively held in its detachable position upon the wall or other fixture to which it has been attached. If desired, the said block or retaining means 6 may be made in its convex face 7 with a groove or channel 16, from which the tapered hole 11 extends to the straight face 12 of the said block 6, the pin 10 in this case being formed with a bent or angular end portion or member 17, which lies in the said groove or channel 16 and bears directly upon the inner concave face of the said main body or shell 2, all of which will be clearly understood from an inspection of Figs. 5, 6, and 7 of the drawings. From the foregoing description of my invention it will be seen that I have devised a simple and cheap device which can be suitably ornamented, is readily carried in the pocket or in the traveling-bag, to be easily attached upon the wall or the framework of a room, and thereby is made to serve the purposes of a temporary garment or picture hanger or any other uses of which the device may be capable.

I am aware that some changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same, without departing from the scope of this invention. Hence I do not limit my'invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the parts as described in the foregoing specification and as illustrated,

in the accompanying drawings, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts.

Havingthus described my invention, what- I claim is 1. A hanger or supporting device, comprising a main body formed in the back with a concaved receiving depression, a suspension means connected with the said body, a block in said concaved receiving depression, and a rearwardly projecting pin extending from said block for detachably securing said hanger or supporting device to a fixture, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. A hanger or supporting device, comprising a main body formed in the back with a concaved receiving depression, a suspension means connected with the said body, a block in said concaved receiving depression, and a rearwardly and downwardly projecting pin extending from said block for detachably securing said hanger or supporting device to a fixture, substantially as and for the purposes set forth;

3. -A hanger or supporting device, comprising a main body formed. in the back with a concaved receiving depression, a suspension means connected with the said body, a block in said concaved receiving depression, said block being provided with a tapered hole, and a tapered pin arranged in the tapered hole of said block, said pin projecting rearwardly from said block for detachably securing said hanger or supporting device to afixture, substantially supporting device to a fixture, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. A hanger or supporting device, comprising a main body formed in the back with a concaved receiving depression, and hav ng a rivet-hole, a suspension means connected with the said body, a block in said concaved receiving depression, a rivet-lug on said block extending into said rivet-hole in said main body and formed with a head upon the outer face of the said body, the said block being provided with a tapered hole, and a tapered pin arranged in the tapered hole of said block, said pin projecting rearwardly from said block for detachably securing said hanger or supporting device to a fixture, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. A hanger or supporting device, comprising a main body formed in the back with a concaved receiving depression, and having a rivet-hole, a suspension means connected with the said body, a block in said concaved receiving depression, a rivet-lug on said block extending into said rivet-hole in said main body and formed with a head upon the outer face of the said body, the said block being provided with a downwardly-extending tapered hole, and a tapered pin arranged in the tapered hole of said block, said pin projecting rearwardly and downwardly from said block for detachably securing said hanger or supporting device to a fixture, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

7'. The herein-described hanger or supporting device consisting, essentially, of a concaved main body, a suspension-hook extending from the said body, a block in the concaved receiving depression of said main body, said block having a convex face fitted upon the concave face of the said receiving depression, a downwardly-extending tapered hole in said block, and a downwardly and rearwardly extending pin having its enlarged end portion arranged within and registering with the tapered hole of said block, and said pin having its large end in engagement with the inner concaved face of the receiving depression of said main body, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
