Application filed lane 15, 1925. Serial .Io. 87,088.
This invention relates to trimmers, and more particularly to a device for cutting ofi the edges of thin sheets of material such as wall paper, wood veneer, window shades, etc.
One object of this invention is to provide a trimmer of the above nature which will be especially adapted for adjustably holding a 'thin flat blade. such as is used in 4 safety razors of the Gillette type.
there have, been illustrated on the accomanying drawings, two forms in which the invention may be conveniently embodied in practice. Fig. 1 represents a top plan view of the trimmer.
Fig. 2 is a side sectional view of the same .0 taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the trimmer, the razor blade carried thereby being shown by dotted lines. 7
ll Fig. 4 is a side view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a front view of a modified form of trimmer, having means for readily adjusting the razor, blade according to the depth of cut desired.
0 Fig. 6 is a sectional view, with parts broken away, of the modified form of trimmet, the section being taken along the line 6-6 of Fig. 5, looking in the direction of the arrows.
I 7 Referring now to the drawings in which like reference numerals denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 10 indicates a body member having a flat bottom 11 and an arched top 12. One
U side of the bod member has a curved shallow recess 13 a apted to form a' su port for the fingers ,of the user. The si e of the member opposite from the recess 13 is 26 and 2? provided with as thin depending tapered flange 14, said flange converging slightly from left to right, as viewed in Fig. 1.
A blade 15, preferably but not necessarily of the Gillette razor type, is adapted to be clamped against the tapered depending flange 14 by means of a thin face plate 16. The face plate 16 is preferably rectangular in shape and is adapted to be held tightly against the side of the body member 10 by a pair of knurled hand-operated screws 17 and 18, said screws being adapted to engage in threaded sockets 19 formed in said body member 10. h V
In order to shift the position .of the razor blade according to the thickness of the material to be cut, the face plate 16 and the body member 10 are provided with alined semi-circular vertical recesses 20 and 21. As will be clear from Fig. 1, the recesses 20 and 21 form a socket into which a stick of wood or other suitable instrument, not shown, may be inserted to engage the upper edge of the blade 15, the knurled screws 17 and 18 having first been loosened to permit the blade to be readily moved.
For the purpose of enabling the width of cut to be accurately adjusted, provision is made, at one end of the body member, of a pair of angular recesses 22 and 23, said recesses being adapted to form seats for L- shaped gauge pins 24 and 25. The gauge pins are preferably square in cross-section so as to fit non-rotatively in the angular recesses 22 and 23. The gauge pins 24 and 25 are adapted to be held withtheir bent ends 26 and 27" at any desired distance from the face plate 16 by means of a pair of knurled screws 28 and 29 which extend through suitable threaded sockets passing through said angular recesses 22 and 23.
In operation. when it is desired to use the device forcutting 011' the edge of a sheet of ma erial, a straight edge 30 will first be laid upon the sheet near its edge. The trimmer will then be placed with its tapered flange 14 against the straight edge 30. The gauge pins 24 and 25 will next be adjusted relative to the bod member 10 to produce the desired widt of cut, and the ends of the straight edge will then be' moved "relative to the ed e of the sheet until the bent ends of said gauge pins exactly coinholding the sheet with one hand, the user will grasp the trimmer in the other hand and draw it rapidly along the straight edge 30 using sufiicient pressure to cut through the thickness of the sheet or sheets upon which the straight edge is laid.
The modified form ofedge trimmer illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 is similar to the-device shown in Figs. lto 4, inclusive, and described above, but is rovided with a selfcontained mechanism for readily adjusting the position of the blade.
The face plate 16 of the modified form of trimmer is provided with an aperture 31 and an arcuate slot 32 located between the knurled screws 17 and 18. A fulcrum pin 33 passes through the a erture 31 and is tightly fitted within a. cylindrical socket 34 formed in the body member 10. Surrounding the fulcrum pin 33 is an adiusting arm 35 which lies underneath the blade 15 and has a fiat hand knob 36 proiecting out through the center hole of the blade and through the arcuate slot 32 of the face plate.
In the operation of the modified form of trimmer when it is desired to adjust the position of the blade to correspond to a difierent depth of cut, it will merely be necesary to slightly unscrew the knurled screws 17 and 18, and by then grasping the knob 36 between the fingers. the blade may be moved as maybe desired. After the screws 17 and 18 have been tightened, the trimmer will be again ready for use.
One advantage of thisinven'tion is that the tapered flange 14 will give the blade a slight inclination to the direction of travel of the body member. and the blade will thus be prevented from following in the grain of the board underneath the sheets to be cut and thus being drawn out of alinement.
A further advantage is that the trimmer may be operated by one hand of the user, leaving the other hand free to hold the sheet material.
A further advantage is that by using a thin blade a much cleaner and straighter cut may be made than was possible with the former tvnes of trimmers.
While there has been disclosed in this specification two forms in which the inven tion may be embodied. it is to be understood that these forms are shown for the purpose of illustration onlv. and that the invention s not to be limited to the specific disclosures but mav be modifiedv and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. in short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments comin within the scope of the following claims.
