WALLBOARD, AND OTHER LIKE "MA- TERIAL Ernest Chalmer,
Surbiton, England Application September 24, 1934, Serial No. 745,295 In Great Britain January 11, 1934 3 Claims.
This invention relates to an improved cutting tool for use with mill-board, Essex board, insulating board made of cane fibre or wood pulp and other like material its object being to provide a simple construction which will have a comparatively small bearing surface will provide guiding means for the tool, will be easier to handle and wherein the cutting blades will last longer and be less liable to break; the construction allowing of cutting the board to within an inch of the ends thereof.
According to the presentinvention, I provide a cutting tool comprising a holder having at one side, or in the case of a double cutter hereinafter referred to, set in the middle, a vertical noncutting guide member of thin material such as a dulled safety razor blade depending below the bottom surface of the said holder and secured in place by a set screw or other means so that it can be detached when necessary.
The side of the holder opposite that to which the vertical guide blade is secured is set at an angle and provided with clamping means for a cutter blade which can be held against the holder at any desired angle and project towards the guide blade, as for instance at a V-angle whereby it will be possible to guide the guide blade or member along, say, the edge of a sheet of millboard or the like and cut the edge on a bevel. The holder itself has a rearward extension which acts as a base when the tool is not in use so as to keep the sharp cutting edges from contact with the bench, table or the like on which the tool is placed.
An appropriate handle is of course provided, which may be integral with or screwed to the rearward extension, or otherwise fitted.
The invention is shown in a practical form of construction, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which:-
Fig. 1 is a side elevation.
Fig. 2 is a plan, and
Fig. 3 a front end view.
In this construction of the device I provide a fiat central portion l for the holder, with an inclined portion 2 at either side thereof, each such portion 2 being fitted on its underside with a clamping plate 3, say by means of screws 4, adapted to hold between it and the holder a cutting blade 5, such as a safety razor blade, set at such an angle to each other as to produce an appropriate V-cut. The centre of the holder is slit at 6 for an appropriate length to accommodate the non-cutting guide blade I which is mounted in a holder or clip 8 which rests on the upper side 9 of the fiat portion I of the holder and is secured there by the head of a screw l0 passing into a screw-threaded hole in the flat part I of the holder. A handle I l is provided.
With such a device, by guiding the guide mem- 5 her 1 in the interstice between two adjoining surfaces of mill-board or the like, the edge of each may be bevelled at a suitable angle and by passing there-over a roller the joint between the two surfaces will hardly be visible.
The holder may be curved to follow the contour of the edge on which it is used.
By removing the guide member 1 a V-groove can be made in any part of the sheet and thus a design can be easily produced. Obviously the holder can be arranged so that the cutting blades 5 can cut vertically or horizontally or again the holder can be so bent and clamps provided that one blade can be set horizontally or thereabout and the other vertically or thereabout; thus enabling various cuts to. be made as for example a ship-lap.
The device is simple to make, and easily used or handled, enabling a good joint to be obtained when assembling boards of the nature referred to L for sound-proofing in rooms, for ceilings and so on. The blades do not become so quickly blunted as in other appliances used for doing the same work.
It is possible to provide right and left hand tools with a single cutter 5 and a single guide member I which are used alternately to produce the V-groove, the advantage being that less effort is needed than with the double bladed type described. So that the cutters 5 do not come in contact with any surface when not in use, a rear extension 12 can be provided to act as a base, the handle and part I2 then lying on the table or bench and the rest of the tool inclining at an upward angle.
I claim:
1. A cutting tool for mill-board and similar material comprising a holder member having a plane upper surface and a bevelled under surface, a longitudinal slot in said holder member, a depending non-cutting guide member mounted in said slot, means for fixing said guide member and cutting blade members fixed to said bevelled under surface. a
2. A cutting tool for mill-board and similar material comprising a body member having a plane upper surface and a V-shaped under surface, an arm carried by one end of said body member, a handle carried by said arm, a longitudinal slot in said body member, a depending non-cutting guide member adjustably disposed in said slot, 2; set screw for fixing said guide member, adjustable cutting members carried by said V- shaped body member and means for :fiXing said cutting members adjusted. V
3. A cutting tool for mill-board and similar material comprising a holder member having a plane upper surface, and a V-shaped under surface, a base member carried by said holder member, a handle carried by said base member, a V
longitudinal slot in said holder member; an adjustable depending non-cutting guide blade disposed in said slot, a set screw for fixing said guide member adjusted, adjustable angular cutting members carried by said V-shaped holder memher, the guide member depending beneath said cutting members, plates for clamping said cutting members and set screws for fixing said cutting members adjusted, the base member being inclined and having a fiat surface to hold the blade edges off the table on'which the implement rests when not in use.
