Description
B. WHITING.
Cream Savers for Reciprocating C hurns.
Patented 1an. 26, 1875.
.lll I I t I I UNITED STATES 'PATENT Grrr-cao RILEY WHITING, OF BEREA, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CREAM-SAVERS FOR RECIPROCATING CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,237, dated January 26, '1875; application tiled January 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RILEY WHITING, of Berea, county of Cuyahoga7 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cream-Protector Attachment to Ohurns, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure l represents a perspective view of a churn with my improved protector applied,
ard Fig. 2 represents a vertical section through protector detached.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both figures.
ln'y invention relates to an improved attachment to upright churns employing the rising and falling dasher, for preventing the splashing and waste of cream incident to the use of such churns as ordinarily constructed; rrnd consists in combining, with a cup or drip adapted to be secured to the top of the churn, an elastic spring-scraper, arranged to surround and clasp the dasher-handle, lin such manner as to remove the adhering cream during the upward stroke of the dasher, and return it (the cream) to the churn without waste.
The invention further relates to certain dctails of construction, as will be explained.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a churn, which may be of any desired or usual construction 5 A', the removable cover. B B' is the shell or casing of the protector, B being the cup, and B' the upper portion or cover, made removable, as will be described. The bottom of the cup or shell B has a perforation through it, and has attached to it a tube, C, provided with an external screw-thread, adapting it to be screwed into a central perforation through the churn-cover A'. The tube O and the perforations through the churn-cover and bottom of the cup are made sufficiently large to permit the ready return of cream escaping through the same. In the bottom of the cup or shell B is placed an annular support, D, having radial arms D1, to the inner ends of which is connected an annular guide, D2, for the handle of the dasher E to work through, and within and above said guide is arranged a spring-scraper,
be further acted upon by the dashcr. The,
spiral form of the scraper, as shown, is found valuable, as giving an elastic scraping action of any desired extent, according to the length of the wire or the pitch of the spiral, but other forms of yielding or spring Scrapers i may be used, if preferred.
rlhe cover or shell B' is provided with a flange or rim, b, fitting tightly within the cup or shell B, and which may be made to extend down nearly or quite to the annular support D, so as to form in connection with said support an inside lining to the cup, effectually preventing the cream from reaching or escaping over the sides of the cup or shell B. The upper portion of the cover may be made in shape of the frustum of a cone, tapering upward to a diameter at its top sucient to accommodate the flasher-handle, or thereabout, as represented in the drawings.
WVithin the shell B is secured an annular guide, b', fastened to the cover in any convenient manner, and around or above said guide is an annular shield, G, which serves to stop and return any cream escaping the scraper F.
The operation of the several parts, and of the devices as a whole, will be readily understood from the foregoing description of their construction and arrangement.
It will also be seen from the description that the cup may be readily removed from the churn, and the cap or cover and scraper separated therefrom and from each other, for the purpose of cleaning.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The shell or casing B B', provided with an elastic scraper, F, to remove the cream from the dasher-handle, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The shell or casing B B', provided with the elastic scraper F and the guides b' D2,
the guid'es serving to keep the dasher-handle by the device may be readily taken apart for in a central position relatively to the shell, cleaning, substantially as described. substantially as described.
3. The herein-described shell or casing B v RILEY WHITING. B', the part B having the flange b iitted to Witnesses: slide Within the cup B, in combination With S. F. ADAMS,
the annular supports D and scraper F, Where- C. R. SQUIRE.
