INVENTOR W WITNESSES ATTORNEYS N. PETERS. Pnum-Limn n her, Washington. D. c
Nrrnn STATES ATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS C. GANDLISH, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
WATER-Fl LTE R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,457, dated August 30, 1881.
Application filed July 2, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOMAS C. OAnnLisu, a citizen of the United States, resident of St. Louis, in the State ofMissouri, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Water-Filters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing, making apart of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
The figure of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of my device.
This invention has relation to water-filters; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement, in connection with an outer closed and water-tight case having a side faucet or discharging-spout, of a central interior supply pipe or tube, which is perforated, and an interior perforated cylinder around said pipe or tube inclosing the filtering material, all as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of this invention is to provide a simple device especially suitable for household use.
In the accompanying drawing, the letter A designates the outer case of the filter, which is provided with closely-joined heads B and O, and is designed to be water-tight.
D represents the supply-pipe, which is secured to the head B and rises therefrom toward the other end of the case, but does not extend through the other head. This tube is designed to be open at the end a, which projects from the case, and is practically closed at the end 1) within the case. The tube is also provided with a number of perforations, 0, forming the communication with the filtering-chamber E, which surrounds said tube.
F indicates an interior cylinder, located between the pipe D and the outer case, A, and secured to the latter by its ends. This cylinder is also perforated, as represented at d, and divides the space within said case and around said pipe into two concentric annular cham- (No model.)
' bers, whereof the inner chamber, E, is designed to be filled with closely-packed cotton or wool, or other suitable filtering material, and the outer chamber, G, is intended to receive the water which has filtered through said cotton or material.
The head 0 of the case is usually made with an interior plug or stopper, 0, of proper size to fit within the end of the perforated cylinder F, and designed to assist in packing the filtering material in the chamber E within the same.
The water-supply faucet being connected to the projecting end a of the pipe D and turned, water will flow into said pipe and laterally through its perforations into the filtering-chamber; thence it will passthrough the perforations of the cylinder F into the chamber G, from which it is discharged through the lateral spout h. A stout ring, z, is usually connected to the upper end of the case, so that it can be readily suspended.
I am aware of a filter having an outside and an inside chamber and perforated pipe; but this devicecannot be employed in ordinary use, on account of other and complex parts.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
The water-filter consisting of the Water-tight case A, having a lateral discharging-spout, h, the central perforated supply pipe or tube, D, rising from the bottom of said case and having projectingend a, and the interior perforated cylinder, F, around said pipe, holding the packed filtering material and sepaigltin g the filteringchamber E from the exterior annular chamber G for the filtered water, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence ofvtwo witnesses.
THOMAS CHARLES OANDLISH.
