Description

l UNITED STATES- -PATENT EEICE.
J P. A. HAVARD AND J; B. BOURGOISE, OF PARS, FRANCE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE FILTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 34,492, dated February 25, 1862.
To all whom t may concer-n:
Be it known that we, JULES PANcoME AL- FRED HAVAED and J EAN BAPTISTE BOUR- GOISE, both of Paris,in the Empire of France, have invented a new and Improved Filtering Apparatus; .and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved filtering apparatus in condition for use. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the apparatus taken out of its case. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the case, and Fig. 5 is a plan of the same. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the packing case or bucket. Fig. 7 is a central vertical section of the apparatus folded or contracted and cased for transportation.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre-A sponding parts in the several figures.
The objectof this invention is to obtain a filtering apparatus of such form and made of such material as to be capable of being readily folded or contracted into a small compass, whereby it may be put into a bucket or case of one-half of its liquid-containing capacity and thereby made easily transportable, the apparatus being especially designed for domestic and army purposes.
The invention consists of two receptacles formed of any suitable water-proof fabric and separated from each other bya suitable filtering medium, which is confined between two wire-gauze or perforated metallic disks; also,
in the manner of supporting the upper receptacle, and also in the manner of packing the apparatus for transportation.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it.
A representsasack, which is made of hemp cloth coated on the inside with caoutchouc to render it water-proof. Said sack may be made of any suitable water-proof fabric. The upper and lower edges of the sack are clamped between two annular metallic rings a a b b', and thereby securely fastened. The said rings when the sack is distended cause it to assume a cylindrical form. On the inside and about one-third the length of the sack from the bottom upward it is divided by a suitable filtering medium into two compartments, forming receptacles B C, the former being above the filtering medium for the reception of the water to be filtered, and the latter below for the reception of the filtrate. The filtering medium D consists of layers of wool, or it lnay be of any other suitable material or substance, interposed between two wire-gauze or perforated metallic disks c d, said disks being soldered or otherwise attached on opposite sides of an annular ring e, forming a case for the filtering medium, which case is fastened in position in the sack by a baud or ring f, which encompasses the sack opposite the case of the filtering medium and clamps it between the outside ofthe inner ring e and inside of the outer ring f. The receptacle C is closed at its lower end by a Inetallic bottom g, which is fastened by solder or otherwise to the top of the inner bot-tom ring b.
E is a faucet, which is secured by a screwthread,` or itl may be in any other suitable manner, to the bottom of the receptacle C, and is for the purpose of drawing the filtrate therefrom.
A flexible tube 71, open at both ends, is attached at its upper end to the ring a, and at its lower end to a metallic tuberi, which passes through the filtering medium near its outer edge, forming a communication between the receptacle (l and external air, and thereby affording means for aproper ventilation of the receptacle. The inner ring aat the upper end of the sack is provided with two ears j la, placed opposite each other, and to which an ordinary bucket-bail m is fastened, whereby the upper part of the sack forming the receptacle Bis suspended from an arm, as will be hereinafter fully described. Said bail also enables the apparatus to be carried about in the hand and to be used like a common bucket for carrying water.
H represents a cylindrical metallic case, which is for the purpose of supporting the apparatus when it is desired for ordinary use in the house or camp, and in` which it is folded when it is to be packed for transportation. The receptacle C may be supported by the bottom edge of the ring f, resting on lugs or brackets projecting inwardly from the upper edge of the case, or` it may be supported-1 merely byfriction,l as shown in; the accompanying illustration.
The exible sides of the receptacle B are retained in a distended or stretched form when the apparatus is desired for use by the telescopic sliding tubes n o p q, the lower secceptacle B, when it percolates through the interstices of the filtering mediu rn intothercceptacle C, from which it is drawn oias it is desired for use, through a faucet hereinbefore described. A
WVhen the pores or interstices of the Iiltering medium'become clogged with sedi-menait is necessary to have the material cleansed. This is eiected, after removing thefaucet and I stopping up the opening in the bottoni of the receptacle by a plug or other suitabledevice, by pressing onithe bottom of the receptacle, causing the filtrate to pass forcibly through the interstices of the ltering material, there- 'byvwashing and cleansing the same in the most thoro ugh manner.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A filtering apparatus consisting o f two receptacles B C, formed of flexible waterproof fabric, filtering medium D, and Wire-4 gauze or perforated metallic disks c el, When combined andarra'nge'd in the mannersub-` stantially as described. i
2. The sliding tubes 1oz-op q, arm n', and bail m, arranged, in combination with'. receptacle B, to operate substantially asdescribed'. i
`3. The 4flexible sides ot? the receptacles 13.0 sliding tubes n opg, case Il, and packing case or bucket I, combinedl and arranged? in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
