SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 395,291, dated December 25, 1888.
Application filed October 27, 1888. Serial No. 289,350. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, PHILIP MLLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Filters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a filter which is intended particularly for drawing lager-beer from the fermenting-casks into kegs; but my filter can also be used for other liquids under pressure.
The peculiar and novel construction of my filter is pointed out in the following,` specification and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichn Figure l represents a longitudinal central section. 'Fig'. 2 is a transverse section in the plane Qc a, Fig. l.

ln the drawings, the letter A designates -a case which is by preference made cylindrical and of metal sufficiently strong to withstand the pressure to which it may be eX- posed. lVhen the filter is to be used for beer, l make the ease of sheet-copper, coated on its inner surface with tin, so that it is not liable to eorrode by the action of the beer. On one end of this case is firmly secured a head, l?, which. is provided with an opening, (t, and with a suitable coupling, so that it can be readily connected. to the liquid-supply pipe. 0n the opposite end of the head is firmly sccured the head C, which is provided with an opening, b, and with a screw-nipple, c, so that the liquid-discharge pipe can be readily connected to the same. Both heads are secured to the case in such a manner that they can be readily removed in order to obtain access to the interior ofthe case. Suitable packing'- rings, cl c, insure tight joints between the heads and the case.

Over the strainer D is placed a filteringbag, E, which is composed of an inner layer of perforated sheet metal, or wire-gauze, and of an outer layer (one or more) of cloth, felt, or other equivalent material, and which is closed at its bottom. sented in the drawings l have shown two filtering-bags, one over the oth er, but in some cases a single filtering-bag will be sufficient. The filtering-bag is retained in position on the strainer by a clamping-ring, 7L.
The liquid to be filtered is drawn from receptacles-such for instance, as fermentingcasks of lager-beer-under a pressure of from five to ten pounds to the square inch, and as it enters the case A through the supply-opening ct, it fills the annular space between the outer surface of the filtering-bag and the inner surface of the ease, and it is gradually forced through the different layers of the tiltering-bag into the interior of the strainer D, whence it escapes through the discharge- Opening lt is obvious that the impurities contained in the liquid as the same enters the case A are retained by the filtering bag or bags, and the liquid which discharges through the opening b is practically free from impurities. lf the filtering bag orbagshave become surcharged with impurities, they can be readily removed from the case A and cleansed by washing or otherwise.
In using my filter for lager-beer I have found that when the commuiiication between the ease A and the fermenting-cash is first opened the filter becomes filled with foam, and I have provided the ease C with a cock, l?, which at the beginning is opened until no more foam appears.
