UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. PARK, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT lN LAMP-CAPS AND SHADE-HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 159,208, dated January 26, 1875; application liled December 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. PARK, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Lamp-Gap and Shade- Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specitication, in which- Figure 1 is aplan of myimprovement applied to a lamp-bowl; Fig. 2, a section showing the wedge-shaped arm for shade-supporter; and Fig. 3, a section showing the same with threadand-screw attachment.
The object of my invention is to provide a metallic attachment for glass lamps, which will subserve the following purposes: First, as a radiator, to conduct the heat from the burner into the surrounding atmosphere, so as to avoid heating the lamp-bowl and fluid contained therein; second, as a base for the arms or supporters of a shade-holder; and, thirdly, as an ornamental appendage for a glass lamp.
1n the accompanying drawing, which illustrates my invention, A is a metallic ring or disk of any desired form or configuration, being independent of any particular design or shape. This ring may be made of brass and polished, or of cast-iron and bronzed or painted in one or various colors. It has a central opening, a, for the passage of the collar of the lamp bowl or burner. From the edge of this opening rises a vertical flange or annular shoulder, B. This flange B is designed to tightly encircle the lamp-collar C, so as to keep the ring or disk A firmly and securely in position. It serves also as a base or pedestal for the attachment of arms D D D, which form supports for a shade. These arms may be secured in any suitable way, as by screwing their ends into holes I) b tapped in the collar B, or by making said ends wedge-shaped, and forcing them in between the flange B and collar of the lamp, this latter method serving to fasten the ring A more firmly upon the lamp.
The device I have just described may be applied to any glass lamp by merely slipping it on, requiring no riveting or other means of securing. It thus furnishes a cheap and simple means of ornamenting glass lamps so as to present a rich and elegant appearance, and at the same time serves to conduct away and radiate the heat generated in the burner. It also provides a ready and efficient pedestal for the shade-holder arms at much less expense than other devices hitherto usually employed for the same purpose.
What I claim as my invention is- As a new article of manufacture, the castmetal lampcap consisting of the plate A, adaptedto rest upon the bowl and the collar B, to embrace the neck of the lamp, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of December, 1874.
WILLIAM It. PARK.
