This application is a continuation in part of my earlier application :[iled December 1 1, 1925, Serial Number 7 5,418.

This invention relates to improvements in bibs for use by young children when eating.

An object of the invention is to provide a bib that carries a pocket or pouch to catch particles of solid. or liquid :lood dropped 0 by the wearer when eating;

A further object is to provide a bib that may be readily washed, that is sanitary, and waterproof A further object is to provide a bib with a pocket or pouch that will always remain distended, while being worn, and that will not leak at the corners;

Further objects will. appear upon reading the specification.

In Figure 1, the apron portion oi. the bib consists preferably oi? two pieces, o'l suit-- able waterproof cloth, for example stork cloth; sewed on the line 53, leaving a depending tlap 3, the latter being sewed at the ends 41, Figs. 1 and 13, to provide small recesses or little pockets 18 to receive the protruding enr s 5 of the removable resilient wholebone strip (3. At the lower outer edges 31 of the pocket 15, see Fig. 5, on each side are sewed tapes 1-6, carrying snap button fasteners 17, or other attachingmeans by which the ends of the pocket 15 are held together as shown in Figure 6 Any other suitable holding meansmay be used. If'the cloth used is of a stiff material, such as-waterproof canvas, the resilient strip 14 will keep the pocket distended, as indicated in Figures 3, 12-, etc.

Where a thin quality of waterproof cloth is used for the bib, anadditional stiff. meniher-may be used to keep the pocket distended. This additional stiff member 25 is iira generally upright position and is indicated in Figure 8, and consists of a piece 25- of whalebone, spring, steel, etc., enclosed in hollow tape, and. attached to the inside upper part of the fold 26, Figure 8, close to, or within, seam 11. The stiffening, member 25 preferably extends to the'band 27, from. which point the hollow tape 28iextendsfup; on the inside and is sewed to the-hem 13 at 29, Figure 9. The stiff member 25. may extend around within the hollow tape 28- if desired.

The stiff member 25: serves to support the outer upper edge: of thepocket containing the member 14,.and thereby'aids in. keeping the pocket distended. The pocket shown in FiguresS and 9 is attached to the apron inthe same manner. as-the pocket in Fig,- ures 1, 3, 4, 6, etc., by placing the pro- The piece trading end 5 on one side of the pocket in the little pocket 18 at the left, see Figures 10 and 13, then flexing the resilient strip 6 and inserting the other end 5 in the remaining little pocket 18 at the right of the bib, and the flap 3 placed outside of the upper edge 19, as shown in Figures 1, 3, and 8. The pocket remains distended during use due to the greater length of the edge containing the resilient member 14; and with the bibs made of thin material, due also to the stiff member 25.

When it is desired to wash the bib, the pocket is removed from the aprons and the tapes 16 disconnected; this will open the ends as shown at 15, and permits the quick and convenient washing out of particles of food that have fallen into the pocket.

In the further modification shown in Figures 15 to 24 inclusive, the flap 40, in Figure 15 is folded double and sewed at 41, the double thickness providing a looped flap of additional stiffness, and preventing any tendency to curl, and more effectively providing a deflecting covering for the joint between the pocket and the apron. In Figure 16, the looped flap 42 is provided with a resilient piece of whalebone 43, or spring metal, etc., as shown in Figure 23 and in dotted lines in the apron in Figure 19. In Figure 17, the looped flap 44 is provided with one part of a snap button fastener 45, the other part of the fastener 46 being shown in Figure 23 on thepocket. \Vhen the snap fastener modification is used, the flap and pocket are fastened together, which further tends to support the' pocket.

The material to form the pocket is cut approximately on the outline shown in Figure 18, the folds to be made on the dotted lines, the cut pattern having integral tapes 4747 to the ends of which are attached snap button fasteners 48, Figure 21. The integral tapes 47 are more economical in manufacture than the sewed tapes 16, shown in, Figure 9. In Figure 21 is also shown the V-shaped supporting braces 49, which connects at the bottom at 50 with a stilt member 55, Figure 24. corresponding to member 25, shown in Figure 8: and at their upper ends the braces 49 are sewed to the folded top of the pocket at the rear as at 51, 51; this arrangement increases the support given to the pocket section, or catchall in that the two ends 51, 51 tend to hold the stiff member 55. Figure 24, central at all times, the pull coming from the points of support at the places where the member 5 enters the little pockets 18, see Figure 13. Upon folding the corners 52, 52 of the pocket, and connecting the tapes 47 with the snap fastener 48, the pocket is held firm yet flexible. After use, the pocket may be washed out as described with the earlier modification.

I claim:

1.
